Spring Game Thread 26: Twins at Reds

MLB Florida and Arizona Spring Training - SB Nation

The Reds keep shooting themselves in the foot with these night games during the NCAA tournament, don't they?

Micah Owings is pitching for the Reds today, in what's probably his most important start of the spring.  Another stellar performance could cement his spot in the rotation, and he's pretty much already guaranteed himself a trip north.  Also, this will be the first game of the spring where he's batting, so that should be exciting.  The Fay asked Hairston about it, and he said that he'd bat Owings 7th in the lineup.  He'll be 9th tonight, because Dusty makes the lineups.

Nick Blackburn is pitching for the Twins.  Last time these two faced each other, he pitched two shutout innings to Owings' 3.  That was in the second game of Spring Training, so both of them should go much farther in the game.  I'd expect to see Owings pitch at least 5 innings if he stays out of trouble.

See the lineups after the jump.

Thanks for the PBP

Top of 3:

Harris pops out to the deceptively rangy Votto at first, then cries that he is no longer a Red.

Owings, pissed about walking in a run the previous inning, strikes out clean-up hitter Morneau swinging.
Morneau borrows a Kleenex from Harris on the pine.

Cuddyer walks, afraid to swing against the mighty Owings, knowing that Micah will show him up with the bat in the bottom half of the inning. When he arrives at first, Votto tells him that he’s a busher. “Swing the bat, you no-talent hack, eh!”

Owings bears down and coaxes Young to fly out to the mighty C-Dick.

Middle 3, Reds trail 1-0

Bottom of 3:

C-Dick GO
Ramon Hernandez yanks one to deep left center. TATER!
Owings steps in, feels the good wood in between his sweaty calloused palms, and stares out to the mound. A crack of the bat later, and he’s on 2nd with a double.

Cherry was right…shoulda batted him 7th.

One out, Bottom 3. Owings on 2nd. Tie game

Willy Mays T-Virus gets all Havocy, takes the next 4 pitches to work a 3-1 count

Then WMT singles in Owings!

Reds lead 2-1 in the bottom of 3.

Now the Havoc begins…

Blackburn is sweating heavily now. He can't keep his mind off that huge lead Willy's working.

He can’t find the plate with his first 2 pitches…then…

Willy CS. HAVOC!

Cherry FO.

End of 3, Reds lead 2-1. Glad you enjoy the illegal, fictionalized dissemination.

so

we can pretty much gaurantee that everytime T-virus is on first there will be a stolen base attempt 100% of the time. sounds fun…and stupid

by sharks on Mar 26, 2009 10:26 PM EDT up reply actions

The sad thing is

that Dusty already said that this is going to happen, yet will be bewildered when other teams see the steals coming and pitch out every time he gets on first.

Gotta clock out now.

Owings has allowed only as many runs as he has scored.

Enjoy the Havoc!

What the hey, I'll give an update

Mike Redmond – Single up the middle
Nick Punto – Single to right, Redmond to 3rd
Nick Blackburn – Strikes out on a caught foul tip
Denard Span – Walks
Alexi Casiilla – Grounds into force out, Redmond out at home
Brendan Harris – Grounds out

Going to the Bottom of the 4th, Reds up 2-1

Whole lotta nothing this inning

Votto – Flies out to right
Phillips – Pops out to 1st
Bruce – Grounds out to 1st

End of 4, Reds up 2-1

Into the game comes the tiny dancer, Danny Herrera

Morneau – Strikes out swinging
Cuddyer – Flies out to center
Young – Strikes out looking

Middle of the 5th, Reds up 2-1

Micah Owings Line

Owings – 4IP; 6 hits; 1 ER; 5 BB; 3 K’s; 21 batters faced AND 1-1 with a double

Not so great, but it probably doesn’t matter at this point.

by D-Rock on Mar 26, 2009 8:28 PM EDT reply actions

Not that I have any insight...

But I hope that he does not. What exactly is he bringing to the team that they don’t already have in Gonzalez, Hairston, and Janish?

That being said, this is the Reds (and Dusty), so he’ll probably make the team.

by D-Rock on Mar 26, 2009 8:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Kep almost never strikes out.

That’s a tiny something…perhaps slighty more important because that skill fits in with Dustbrain’s strategery.

He's been heavily rumored to be on the trading block

And he seems more movable than Nick Masset. Unless he’s standing between second and third.

by Brendanukkah on Mar 26, 2009 8:35 PM EDT up reply actions

well it is a shame if the Reds were going to trade him they wouldn't do it when

he had more value, like in the off season. Oh well i can tell you one thing Keppinger can flat out get traded.

by orex121 on Mar 26, 2009 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Rattled by the might of Owings, Nick Blackburn hits the showers

Jesse Crain toes the rubber, knees knocking, pits drenched.

Keppinger singles up the middle and dreams about what he’d look like in Cubbie Blue.

Dickerson singles to right and gives Dusty the finger.

Ramon Hernandez uses his veteran presence to continue his seminar on the three true outcomes. Today’s lesson: striking out.

Dusty decides to cut the batter’s Y quotient in half and sends up Laynce nix to replace Danny Ray Herrera. Nix singles to left to drive in Keppinger, then takes second while Delmon Young is awed by Keppinger’s hustle and scrap.

Willy Taveras walks. Dusty throws his hat on the ground, then realizes that it helps T-Virus’s OBP and justifies his signing. He dusts off his cap, just in time to see Cherry Hudson show Dusty what a leadoff hitter looks like by blooping a hit to left. C-Dick and Nix score (DickNix?). Taveras speedily takes the extra base.

Joey Votto plays some smawbaw and hist a sac fly to bring Willy home.

Jesse Crain ends his suffering, committing sepuku on the mound. Bob Keppel comes into pitch, slips on on stray entrails and uncorks a wild pitch. Cherry to second. Keppel recovers, and gets BP to ground out to end the slaughter.

Reds up 6-1 after five.

Dusty brings the Lincoln out of the garage

Janish tells Hairston that anything you can do, I can do better, and goes in to play shortstop. Wilkin Castillo goes in to play second base in full catcher’s gear.

Kubel replaces Keppel and pops out to Votto

Of course he does. Middle of the sixth, Reds up 6-1.

The Twins make a lot of substitutions

Like those octuplets, they’re all pretty much interchangeable and indistinguishable.

by Brendanukkah on Mar 26, 2009 9:07 PM EDT reply actions

Jay Bruce strikes out, but he will do better next time

Keppinger grounds out.

Jacque Jams comes in to bat for Dickerson, knowing that he’s only got one or two chances left to make the team. He strikes out.
