Off Day Topic: Who is gone from the 40-man roster to make room?

It's looking more and more like Jonny Gomes will make the Reds roster on Opening Day, and there is still a very good possibility that one of the Laynce Nix/Darnell McDonald/Jacque Jones will make the team as well.  The problem is that none of those players are currently on the 40-man roster, which is filled to the brim at this point.

So, who gets the boot to make room for these guys?  For reference, you can see the list of players currently on the 40-man roster on the lower left sidebar.

Hopper is gone in favor of Gomes

Reds record while I'm in attendance: 15-0 (lifetime)
Can someone score me some tickets? :)

I say

They will try like hell to trade Masset and Keppinger. If they can’t move both, I think the only position player they can outright and not have to worry being sucked up on waivers is Norris Hopper. At this point he is no longer needed. We signed Taveras to a two year deal, and our best CF prospect is in Triple A this year. Hopper doesn’t have the stick for a corner outfield spot. I say he goes.

Agreed on both accounts.

I agree

I think they try to trade Masset and Kep.
Wasn’t Hopper released during the winter and resigned to a minor league contract. Was this before the Rule 5 draft and they had to put him on the 40 man?

by fourrunhomer on Mar 24, 2009 10:12 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hopper is on a split contract, i think

i dont know what that means, but i think it means if he plays in AAA he’ll make minor-league money, and if he plays in the majors he’ll make major league money. but i have no idea.

im pretty sure its still the league minimum (470,000 or so)

because he is not yet arb-eligible.

by Charlie Scrabbles on Mar 24, 2009 10:40 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes

It was close to the minimum for both the major league and minor league parts of the contract.

Which suggests the Reds were expecting to send him down.

I think

he’ll clear waivers.

And if he doesn’t, the Reds won’t be too upset.

Hopper was my first guess as well

i wouldnt be surprised if Maloney hits the road either. he’s 9 or 10 on the SP depth chart right now and he’ll be repeating AAA.

i would like to see Maloney in teh big leagues

he has outstanding minor league numbers. He is a victim of a weak fastball…

but look at his K and BB rates

he has struck out more than a batter an inning in over 500 minor league innings, and he doesn’t walk anyone. He deserves to at least be a part of the conversation. He gave up a few more hits last year but his K and BB rates stayed the same. I am hypothesizing that he had bad luck last year.

I think your hypothesis is wrong
Yr Org/Lev BABIP GB% LD% FB% IF/F HR/F
2005 PHI/SS .364 30.3 14.7 50.5 11.3 3.6
2006 PHI/A .267 45.7 12.4 38.6 18.5 2.8
2007 CIN/AA .241 41.0 14.8 44.3 16.7 14.8
2007 PHI/AA .301 42.8 9.1 46.2 20.3 7.3
2007 CIN/AAA .235 43.6 10.3 41.0 10.0 12.5
2008 CIN/AAA .318 41.3 20.0 37.3 17.5 11.3

His line drive rate was higher last year than it has ever been. He was getting hit hard last year. It may not continue into the future, but I don’t think his results last year were because of luck.

I still don’t think Walt is done. There will be some bats available in the next week or two. It looks like we are going to be without a power bat from the left side on the bench. There will be a lot of guys made available in trades or released in the next 12 days, so things could get exciting. I think our pitching is set, but I still wouldn’t rule out a move or two, especially to get another LH bat. Walt must have something cooking, or I don’t think he would of let Ward go so early.

The three that I wouldn't mind see going

Hopper, Masset, Richar (so long, Junior!).

by Brendanukkah on Mar 24, 2009 10:21 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I second this

And I dont know enough about Craig Tatum to say if he’s fodder. I need my BP but its at home on my nightstand.

i like Richar

i think under the right circumstances he could become Brandon Phillips lite. if Gonzo cant start the season, ideally i would like to see a Richar/Keppy platoon at SS. as long as Keppy only plays against lefties.

My millions are unconventional!

by Charlie Scrabbles on Mar 24, 2009 10:46 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

no way Kepp should be a shortstop

If Gonzo can’t go, Hairston or Janish should man the position. Keppinger just doesn’t have the range.

by MixFMKyle on Mar 24, 2009 10:49 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

ive been wrestling with that

im hoping his range was so awful last year because of his bum knee. but if his range is only bad, and since he crushes lefty pitching, i wouldnt mind him seeing 2 games a week at SS against lefties. Hairston’s range isnt much better than Keppy’s, and i have a strong inclination that Hairston is gonna be teh suck this season. and there isnt enough room on the roster for Janish.

My millions are unconventional!

by Charlie Scrabbles on Mar 24, 2009 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think it's his bum knee

Kepp is not a shortstop.

Agree about Hairston.

We need Sea Bass to be healthy.

by BubbaFan on Mar 24, 2009 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

troof

Sea Bass has to not only be healthy, but also productive. but seeing as those two premises are as likely to be false as they are to be true, i think our second best option is a Richar/Keppy platoon.

My millions are unconventional!

by Charlie Scrabbles on Mar 24, 2009 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Just curious

Why do you like Richar over, say, Rosales or Janish? I haven’t checked out any numbers, but I just don’t recall being shown anything by Richar.

by Brendanukkah on Mar 24, 2009 12:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

well

good question. i like Rosales, but i think Richar has a better glove. i dont think i can back that up, but there it is. Janish has a better glove, but i think Richar can hit better. and Richar is the only one of them who swings lefty. his splits arent drastic, but he’s only adequate against righties so i wouldnt want to see him against lefties (minorleaguesplits has these #s, but they dont link well). especially since Keppy murders them.

really, you’re probably 6 one way, half dozen the other with these guys. i think my main point of the whole thing is that i’d rather a few other guys get the axe before Richar. he’s got some pop and reportedly plays decent D, so i’d like to see it. but we’re talking about the 25th roster spot here, so i’m sure we’ll see every one of these guys at one time or another.

Through a Red fan’s eyes:

Jacque Jones: Bad 2008, terrible spring. Release him.
Laynce Nix: Not a great spring, and has to low of a line drive %. Send him to AAA, he might be a usefull backup.
Darnell McDonald: He has been our best hitter this spring. He should make the Reds.

Through Dusty Baker’s eyes:

Laynce Nix: Can’t create as much HAVOC as the other two, and is also the least suited to playing in the heat and sun. Clogs the bases too much. Has an isoCLOG (obp – avg) of .096 this spring so far. Not good. There is never a good time for it, but I think I will wait until after tomorrows game to cut him.

Darnell McDonald: Can create the most havoc. Clogs the bases with an .395 obp.

Jacque Jones: Can create some havoc. Has a .171 obp, that’s good. So he has less havoc , but clogs the bases less then Darnell. That’s a hard choice. I’ll choose Jacque, and send Darnell to AAA, since I have managed him before.

Someone educate me please

The three guys I know little/nothing about are Lecure, Manuel, and Tatum.

I think they’re gonna try like hell to unload Masset and Kepp but we’ll see.

the Reds got Manuel for Dave Williams

he pitched really well in the minors last year and got some sorta award.

Lecure is a backend starter/middle reliever type

Tatum is a defensive catcher who cant hit. he’s nothing but a borderline back up catcher.

neither of these guys will likely ever be big league regulars, but they make for decent depth in the high minors.

Then why waste 40 man roster spots on them?

they had to be added to the 40 man

or be exposed to the rule 5, i think. they arent bad players, and they make for good depth. i wouldnt mind if they were cut to be replaced by someone better, but unfortunately i dont see anyone vying for a spot (other than Gomes) who is better.

Worthy?

Although not known for his hitting, Tatum did hit like a screaming banshee this spring. Perhaps, like Hanigan, his offense is finally coming around. Although there will be some tough decisions on the 40 man, I think all three of these guys are worth keeping around if possible.

Middle MANuel

We discussed him at length here not long ago.

He had a stupid low WHIP last year.

Walks few. Fans many. Rarely wild. Seldom gives up the long ball. 13.2 innings in the Arizona Fall League with a 13:1 K:BB and 1.98 ERA. He’ll start 2009 at Triple-A Louisville.
