Reds cut 6
From the Reds, via CTR:
Following today's game the Reds optioned to Class AAA Louisville RHP Ramon Ramirez and INF Danny Richar...reassigned to minor league camp LHP Ron Flores and RHP Jeff Kennard...released LHP Aaron Fultz and 1B/OF Daryle Ward... 36 players remain in camp
No real surprised here. Ramirez and Richar were going to Louisville anyway, and we won't miss Flores or Kennard. I would have liked to see Ward go to AAA for insurance, but it's fine without him too. Also worth noting: Jacque Jones and Darnell McDonald are still in big league camp.

If Jock Jams somehow goes North
I will do something outrageous. It will probably involve bitching on an internet forum, but it will be outrageous nonetheless.
I miss the old days of the internet when men were men, hot girls were middle aged men, and hot underage girls were FBI agents.....
Kind of surprised to see Ward released so early
At least early compared to Jones. We’d brought him in for power off the bench and a backup 1B, but it looks like we’ll be depending on Gomes to fill those roles.
Kepp
can backup 1st. or if Wilkin or Adam Rosales make the cuts they can also back up 1st. I don’t think this will be a problem area.

If Jones makes it
over McDonald or Nix, I will cry. They can’t, can they?
Why would he still be here?
can we picket and attend game two
and teh picketers yell at the rr’s who attend?

I really want the Reds to do well this year
but as the same time, I don’t because that just means Dusty sticks around and shit like this continues to happen.
If they’re successful this year, it will certainly be in spite of him, not because of him, and that’s not sustainable.
I’m still counting on Jocketty to ultimately make things right with the roster.
I was not
upset when they signed Jones. I thought he had a shot at turning things around. I liked him w/the Twins. HOWEVER, he has done nothing this spring. This is getting ridiculous. I guess we should have read something into it when Dusty said that Jones is not Patterson.
On the other hand, I hated the Ward signing, but he has shown something at the plate. I am surprised that he was let go this soon. I still don’t want him on the team, but compared to what Jones has shown……………One of the beat writers said he hurt his chances by coming to camp overweight.
Let's face it...
Jones has performed well enough to make the team.
We want to build long period of time. I didn’t come here for the shot run.
I guess
well enough just means putting on the uniform.
Or do you mean he “Performed” well enough.

Depends on exactly what you are performing...
Coutlangus was always a good performer.

I wonder...
If Jack Jobs sticks and goes north with the big-league squad with his .108 BA and .135 SLG, will that be the worst spring-training performance ever for a Reds player who makes the major league roster?
If so, it makes me think that Dusty should try running one of the Big Three auto makers. I think he has the right mentality.

How much do spring training stats matter?
It just seems like it’s a really small sample size, involving atypical situations. If spring training stats mattered, Bubba Crosby would be an all-star.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Well, they matter enough...
That managers and GMs make decisions based on them all the time, and a lot of times they really do indicate some sort of ability (or lack thereof).
I think this is merely a call for consistency. If you’re going to send down Ramon Ramirez because he is getting rocked, you should do the same with a guy who has struggled all spring to get on the interstate and is probably on the downside of his career, judging by his recent major-league performance.

i think they matter
i mean, obviously they matter. roster decisions are made based at least in part on spring performance. if Owings had a 10.00 ERA and had looked awful out there all spring, and Homer was just bein’ Homer, then Homer would get the job. ergo, ST stats matter. at least some.

I still think
it’s going to be options more than OBP behind the decisions.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
They shouldn't matter alot
I mean, a guy like Votto, Bruce or BP struggles a little in ST, and you’d brush it off as small sample size; you also don’t expect a guy like McDonald to hit .370 during the regular season. However, Jones has hit:
’06: .285/.344/.499
’07: .285/.335/.400
’08: .147/.239/.207
’09 ST: .107/.171/.132
That looks like a pattern to me. He’s also going to be 34 next month.
Often wrong, never uncertain.
I am reminded...
Of the time when I was in the Far East, and my friend bought a box of what he thought were saltine crackers.
He opened them and, eating one, found that they were stale. He also realized that not only were they bad, they had sugar on them instead of salt, which meant that even when they were good, they were not that good in the first place.
Kind of like our friend Jock Jobs, who has a career OPS+ of 98, with a whopping 87 in 2007, which was his last “good” year.
And Adam Dunn's spirit, ranging for revenge / With Ate by his side come hot from hell, / Shall in these confines with a monarch's voice / Cry 'Havoc,' and let slip the dogs of war...

I don't know what that means cuz I've never seen the show, but speaking of shows set in DC
I got an e-mail today saying that a television pilot was being shot in town, so when you see a gigantic fireball go off by the Key Bridge at 7:00 am and again at noon, it’s cool. Just part of the show.
Sometimes living in this town can be fun.

Not one but TWO fictional fireballs for a TELEVISION show?!?
Clearly we are a nation struggling with two wars and the reinvention of our economy.

I just received this picture
in the context of “Enjoy sculling tomorrow, but be careful”.

Apparently this was one of the fireballs. Badass!!
...because there's already someone posing as Jacob Brumfield

Nope. He was sent down with Fisher last week.

Can someone score me some tickets? :)
thanks, I don't really pay much attention to the Reds
I’ll go back in my hole now.
"How big IS your magic wand?"
I think you're on the right track though
I think Denove is still around… for some reason. I can’t find him on any cut list.

Bankston is with Louisville
I think Denove is the missing link.

Thank you, sir.
May I have another?
I was fooled because he saw some action in yesterday’s game. (replacing Hanigan in the late innings)

BTW
I’ve just updated the roster on the left sidebar of our main page so that you can see the up-to-date list of players still in camp.
"How big IS your magic wand?"
Aside from Thompson, Hopper and Jones
…everyone has a case for making the final roster. (assuming possible AGon and Bray injuries)
Castillo – versatility is his key but I think he’s more insurance than anything else
Kepp – likely staying but possible trade bait
Rosales – visions of Rose … Cincy will eat that up
Janish – helped his case with his bat this ST
Gomes – a virtual lock
McDonald – playing his way onto the team
Nix – least likely of the outfielders… but hardly worth discounting
Bailey – depends on what they do with Masset
Herrera – the first LHP if Bray is hurt
Roenicke – hard to overlook upper 90s heat
Viola – looking very good this Spring
