Spring Game 23 Thread: Reds at Pirates

MLB Florida and Arizona Spring Training - SB Nation

I'm not all that concerned about Aaron Harang at this point.  It sounds like he's been pitching to get himself in shape more than worrying about the actual game situation.  However, I know there are plenty out there that would breath much easier if he would start posting some good results.  Maybe today will be that day.

After being dominated by Paul Maholm yesterday (are lefties going to kill this team this year?), the Reds take on Ian Snell today.  The nice thing about the move to Goodyear next year is that the Reds won't be playing the Pirates 25 times a year (including Spring/Regular season).  I don't dislike the Pirates or anything, but it gets old playing the same teams all of the time.

You can see lineups after the jump.

Go B-Team!

Jacque Jams didn’t play yesterday, and he’s not in the lineup today. Cause for relief?

Pitch count

Acording to gameday Harang has thrown like 30 pitches in 5 inn.
If true, He can go all the way

by mexicanred on Mar 22, 2009 2:45 PM EDT reply actions

Gameday messes up the pitch count

all hits or outs = 1 pitch
Ks = 3 pitches
BBs = 4 pitches

Sorry

didn´t know that, but helped me to remember somethig my father toldme.
Back in the late 50´s and early 60´, here in México they used to air the world series but two or thre hours after the game was over and used this format. The radio anouncer needed just one pitch for every play. The games lasted like 30 min.

by mexicanred on Mar 22, 2009 2:53 PM EDT reply actions

No problem

We all got fooled by it at one time or another.

Were the games any less dramatic with one pitch ABs?.. though at that time you were probably glad to get anything. We’re all kinda spoiled now with internet broadcasts and nearly full season television coverage.

Japan still does that today

They don’t limit it to one pitch, but they do compress it to the most important pitches. I don’t know how far behind the actual 1st pitch that they start, but they do compress the game to elminate a lot of the trips to the rosin bag, waiting for the ballboy to replenish the home plate umpire, etc. Call it “Baseball for World Series of Poker Fans”.

I really hope that Harang is back

Because if he can do this every time he goes out, we are good shape

by wishfuldrifter on Mar 22, 2009 2:59 PM EDT reply actions

34 no-hitters a year would kinda rock.

...because there's already someone posing as Jacob Brumfield

by Cy Schourek on Mar 22, 2009 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Indeed it would

Maybe he could throw in a perfect game or two as well every year.

So maybe he wont get a no-hitter every time he goes out… but if he could at least dominate to the tune of allowing less runs than the Reds have… that would work too

by wishfuldrifter on Mar 22, 2009 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I suppose I'd be content with that.

Thanks a bunch for the PBP reports.

This was really nice to read through. Perhaps you could do this hippie a favor and at the end of an inning, post the inning and score, too? Cuz that would be marshmallowy delicious!

Obviously

The Reds need to start the likes of McDonald, Janish, Richar, etc., instead of BP, EdE, and the like, if they want any offense. ;-)
