Scary Reds comparison
Here are two career stat lines of two guys who are/were Reds.
Player A - .253/.291/.407
Player B - .249/.294/.394
Know who each guy is?
Player A is of course, Corey Patterson.
Player B is the guy who will be our cleanup hitter for the 2nd year in a row against Right Handed Pitching for his career, Brandon Phillips. Its kind of a swift kick in the junk to Reds fans that somehow this is still going to happen in the middle of our lineup.

His 2008 numbers are nearly perfectly in line with his career averages..
..but for what it’s worth he has improved since coming to the Reds:
2006: .268 / .315 / .429
2007: .282 / .310 / .428
2008: .247 / .293 / .383
Not quite Pattersonian.

Ow
That hurts my soul. Way to use the ol’ Joe Poz A/B trick. I really really wish BP weren’t so terrible against righties. He belongs in the 6 slot.
Double fucking yawn
Why is obc so mean to me when I offer an introduction to a beautiful 25 year old Red's Cheerleader.
as much as BP sucks as a cleanup hitter
comparing a guys splits to a crappy players overall stats is kind of unfair
to play devil's advocate
EE vs. RH last yr:
.235/.316/.450
that said, his career line is better:
.264/.332/.451
while not all that great, it’s still no secret who the cleanup hitter should be. Maybe EE will actually fill out that potential we all keep talkinig about and force dusty’s hand.
Slightly
but 70% of the time Phillips steps to the plate, he is Corey Patterson. The other 30% of the time, he is a quality hitter.
that doesn't even make sense

I guess my point is a lot of RHs suck against RH pitching
that and we really dont really have that much better an option for the cleanup spot. I want phillips out of the 4 hole as much as anyone, but that pretty much requires adding another player.
really?
i dont want to get into a whole dynamics of lineup construction thing here, but i would argue that EdE and Bruce are far better suited to the cleanup spot than BP.

I am a Votto in the Clean up role fan
He is all man.

hmm...I should have phrased that better
I did already say EE should be in the cleanup spot, and also I would make the lineup with 3456 as votto, bruce, EE, BP if dusty handed the lineup card to yours truly, so I completely agree with you. I probably should have said “requires adding another player for managment to actually make the right change” cause thats more along the lines of what I meant. I personally dont buy into that whole LH/RH rotation crap, but its obvious it isn’t going to change anytime soon.
i getcha
and im with you all the way.

in no way do i wish to defend Corey Patterson
But last year was a down year even for a low-caliber player like him. You need to compare what Corey did last year (while we watched him and hence, our perception of his impact on a team) to your Phillips line for a more-fair argument.
Corey last year- .205 / .238 / .344
BP split career- .249 / .294 / .394

corey patterson had a down year last year. he’s not as bad as we perceive him to be. i should be stoned for that comment.

Just some numbers from around the league...
The Reds could of aquired some of these guys, but remember these are 2008 salaries. All are RH except Patterson and Jacque Jones. Career stats don’t always tell the story. So if we’re going on numbers alone, Jacque Jones out shines Phillips.
Career stats
Avg OBP Slg 2008 salary
Corey Patterson 253/.291/.407 3 mill
Jacque Jones .277/.326/.448 6.33 mill
Brandon Phillips .249/.294/.394 2.9 mill
Xavier Nady .280/.335/.458 3.35 mill
Adam Dunn .247/.381/.518 13 mill
Kevin Youkilis .289/.385/.472 3 mill
Rocco Baldelli .281/.325/.445 2.25 mill
Albert Pujols .334/.425/.624 13.8 mill
Andruw Jones .259/.339/.489 14.7 mill
Aramis Ramirez .284/.341/.502 15 mill
Manny Ramirez .314/.411/.593 18.9 mill
