Spring Game 15 Thread: Reds at Twins
Micah Owings takes the mound for the second time this spring against the Twins. He faced them in his first start of the year back on February 26th when he threw 3 shutout innings, allowing 2 hits and striking out 2. Based on his performance so far this spring, I would have to call him the front-runner in the race for the 5th spot in the rotation. However, his lead is not so stable that he can afford to mess up anywhere along the way at this point. Honestly, it's exciting to watch these guys compete so well with their jobs on the line. It gives me hope that they can do it in games that count.
According to the press release, relievers available in the Reds bullpen today are RHP Edinson Volquez and RHP Mike Lincoln. Surely there are more, but hopefully they won't need them.
The Reds will be facing left-hander Francisco Liriano. Liriano's numbers look a lot like Owings' numbers this spring. He's pitched 9 innings, allowing just 2 runs while striking out 7 and walking only a single batter. Obviously the Reds have their work cut out for them tonight, which is why it's great to see Joey Votto's name back in the lineup again. Welcome back, eh!
See the lineups after the jump.
Game time is 7:05pm. No home audio, but there is Gameday.

still
i’d rather see what they, especially Dickerson, can do against lefties. he hasnt hit them well historically and that probably will not change, but the only way it will change is if he works at it. like against a badass like Liriano.
and i doubt Bruce and Votto will sit often against lefties. they may get a day off here or there, but i think Dusty played them last year regardless.

Blatz
The beer that tastes like it name sounds!
1. Get your Blatz really really really cold
2. Smoke some good old fashioned Jamaican
3.Turn on the game
4. Turn down the sound
5.Go ahead and tape that Liberace poster on the ceiling
6.Now pop a top and get busy!
7. Don’t forget to sing along with Lee:

eh
its just a ceremonial thing. Harang is the salty vet and he’s started, what, 3 straight opening days? im more worried about how 1-8 in the lineup is gonna look, i dont care so much who’s slotted in at 9.

I agree that it's a ceremonial thing....
but that’s the best argument for why Volquez should be starting. Best ERA by a Reds’s starter since 2002, most Wins by a Reds’ starter since 1995. He earned the nod.

its a valid point
statistically you’re correct. plus, i’m not thrilled with EV starting a night game here in Cincy in April. Brrrrrrr. But i dont want him to get a big head as being the #1 Guy. Next year? Different story.
"Hey! Look at the kid in the sombrero!"
oh im not arguing
i honestly dont care either way who starts game 1. as long as he starts game 5, 10, 15, 20, 25…that’s what im most worried about.

I think that
if he starts game 1, he would be scheduled to start games 6, 11, 16, 21, 26, and so on.

I'm all for Harang
starting on opening day. i understand he had an off year, and Volquez had a great year. But I think Harang has earned his spot in the rotaion.

I found some kind of italian shoes at the mall tonight that had leather rubbed with Lemon Oil. the brand name was polikinos or something like that. i am trying to google them to see if I can find them cheaper online.
I can’t remember the exact brand name though. If you guys know please tell me!

It would be a fancy men’s shoe store: men’s shoes for special occasions, like weddings or lying around the house.

This is an odd question...
Does anyone know where I could go to read a play-by-play account of a game, in chronological order, with no spoilers? As in, I could read the story of the game, PA by PA, without having the score revealed to me until I get to the end?
I would find this enjoyable on those west coast nights when I can’t make the time to watch a game that’s already concluded by the time I get home, but I still would like to at least spend a few minutes reading how the game unfolded, with all of its ups and downs.
Anybody? Does it exist anywhere? Am I the only one who would ever use such a feature?

If you don't mind parsing through some XML
you can look at the raw gameday files. They’re kind of a pain to read through though.
"How big IS your magic wand?"
I could make that work.
Is there a better way for me to get to a certain day’s link beyond bookmarking this link and then altering the url?

the best I can say is
if you start here, it will get you to the start of every month. Click the month, and then the day, and then the game. When you get into the game, click the inning folder and that’s where the inning by inning play-by-play is.
I think I might be able to whip something up in excel fairly quickly that will allow you to key in the game and read the play by play in a spreadsheet. Any interest in that?

I think the problem is the "no spoiler" requirement
Game threads at blogs and forums do play by play as it happens, and if the discussion is not threaded, it will be strictly chronological with no spoilers in the thread. (They do game threads at RedZone, and Trent used to play by play at his blog.) The problem is that they’re likely to post the results above it, either in another thread as as the title to the game thread.
Which is the same problem with the play by play at ESPN, etc. You have to get past the box score to get there.
