From the Dept. of Things that aren't Surprising: Daryl Thompson is hurt

Fay: "Right-hander Daryl Thompson is being held back by shoulder tightness. Thompson has been troubled by the shoulder in the past. He had surgery in 2006. He spent a month on the DL with a strained shoulder last year.

He hasn't pitched in a game since Feb. 27. He threw a bullpen Tuesday and felt fine. "

Maybe he shouldn't be throwing an entire bullpen when he has a sore shoulder? I'm not expert, but that seems dangerous.

Maybe that trade wasn't so good after all

Bill Bray Traded with Royce Clayton, Brendan Harris, Gary Majewski, and Daryl Thompson to the Reds for Austin Kearns, Felipe Lopez, and Ryan Wagner.

I don’t want any of the guys on either side of that trade EXCEPT Bray and Thompson…the two we’ve kept.

Kearns has had the most value of any player in that list since the trade

even with the crap he put up last year.
Kearns: 6.3 wins
Lopez: 1.7 wins
Wagner: -0.3 wins

Bray: 1.2 wins
Majewski: -0.1 wins
Harris: 3.2 wins (all after leaving the Reds)
Thompson: -0.2 wins
Clayton: 0.3 wins (-0.2 with the Reds)

I would have liked to keep Kearns. Otherwise, I don’t really care for any of the lot that much.

I see Kearns as having some value

except when you attach his $8M price tag.

Bray and Thompson are much younger, playing near league minimum salary, and have some decent, if not intriguing upside. Kearns has some upside, but I think he’ll need a full-time OF job to realize that potential, and I don’t think he’ll get it this year nor next.

at the time of the trade, Kearns and Lopez’ values were much, much higher than the return. Krivsky traded in two valuable young position players for pennies on the dollar.
