Spring Game 13 Thread: Reds at Yankees
First night game in a while, and this time it is against the vaunted Yankees. Well they would be vaunted if their lineup wasn't missing their regular C, 1B, 2B, 3B, and SS tonight. Still, Nick Masset has his work cut out for him in the race to be the 5th starter. Yes, I'm still rooting against him, but not so much that I want him to lose tonight's game. I'm just rooting enough so that he won't win the 5th spot in the rotation.
Available out of the pen for the Reds tonight are RHP Jordan Smith, RHP James Avery, LHP Aaron Fultz and RHP Carlos Fisher.
The Reds offense will go up against Joba Chamberlain. Chamberlain has an 18.00 ERA right now, so he must not be very good or something. The big news tonight is that Alex Gonzalez will be playing shortstop for the first time in a Reds uniform since September, 2007. I'm interested to hear BK's take on how well Gonzalez moves.
See the lineups after the jump.
Game time is 7:15pm. No home audio tonight, but you can watch the game on MLB.TV. There is always Gameday too or you can follow along with BK on the Red Reporter Twitter feed.

Reds game of the year on TV here!
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
YES Network? MLB Network? FSN? I'm not near a tv guide right now to know.

Which means
We have to sit through 15-30 minutes of talk about A-Rod’s hip before we get baseball.

Hell YES!!!!!
Good looking out on the ST game on TV tonight….i have been wanting to see the Reds in action all spring….luckily i have the YES network on DirectTV is this game on any other channels?
On the first batter of the game
the announcer just said something to the tune of "this is what dusty is hoping for, get the first batter on and create some HAVOC on the basepaths….we’ll see…. nevermind…he just got thrown out trying to steal second
I think it's only on YES
And on MLB.TV.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Joba the Hut
has kinda sucked so far this spring. Not really unusual for a young pitcher, but people are starting to get faintly concerned.
A leadoff single for Dickerson, on a 1-0 count.
Dusty is hoping for “havoc on the basepaths.” The announcers actually said that.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
And havoc it is
Dickerson caught stealing. Molina guns him down.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Joba strikes out Bruce
On three pitches. Bruce didn’t even swing at any of them.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
The scrappy, hustling Brett Gardner singles
Take that, Melky Cabrera.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
do you feel that Damon looks like a total tool shed ever since he shaved off the caveman beard and hair…….nice snag by Barker just now
Nah
I like him better clean-shaven.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
That was quick
Johnny Damon lines into a double play, Nady flies out to Bruce. Not much rest for Joba.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
BP also goes down on three pitches
But he did swing. Waves at the slider low and away.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
/embittered by false hopes of a patient BP
...because there's already someone posing as Jacob Brumfield
I guess Joba has fixed his mechanical problems
EdE puts up a bit of a fight, but goes down on a nasty breaking ball.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
hey now
I sensed some satisfaction in that post. Check your Yankeeness at the door there missy.
"How big IS your magic wand?"
I'm not really a Joba fan
But he’s pitching really well. When someone pitches like that, you have to tip your hat no matter the laundry.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
false
I can dislike the Yankees no matter how good they are. You should try it some time. It’s fun! :)
(it also works for the Cubs and Red Sox)
"How big IS your magic wand?"
It's hard for us Yankee fans
The players we’re hating on could be wearing pinstripes the next season.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
yeah
phrases like “It’s hard for us Yankee fans” are why people hate the Yankees. :P
"How big IS your magic wand?"
I knew you'd appreciate it :-)
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Leadoff double for Godzilla
Almost a home run. Bruce fields it off the wall. Bubba would have gotten that.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
And then been unable to throw the ball because his shoulder is shot all to hell

There must be a soccer game going on somewhere.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
DC United opens its season on March 22 against the Beckham-less Galaxy
Then the USA is playing Trinidad & Tobago in Nashville in a World Cup qualifier on April 1.

The Reds of the EPL beat Real Madrid today in the Champions League
for those who care. 80% of the reason I like Liverpool is because their nickname is the Reds.
Ransom gets Matsui home
Ransom goes to 2B on the throw, and kicks the ball out of A-Gon’s glove sliding in. Safe.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Massett buckles down
Only gives up the one run.
A-Gon looking decent at SS so far.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Hanigan singles off Joba
His bat shatters, or it would have been a fly out.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Bankston plays the game right
Hits a soft grounder to 2B – too soft for a DP.
The speedy Hanigan is in scoring position.
Holy crap! Dickerson singles to deep CF. Gardner misplays it. Or loses it in the lights. Or it blew off course. Gardner is known for his glove, but that wasn’t good.
Tied 1-1.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
For the second time tonight
A Yankee sliding into 2B has jarred the ball from Sea Bass’ glove. Ramiro Pena with the double.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
The insanely speedy Brett Gardner
Singles to the center-left gap.
He tries to stretch it to a double. He’s not quite that speedy. A-Gon holds onto the ball this time and tags him out.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
No
Teewrecks44 said he got it on DirectTV or something.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
YES here as well
i get the YES network with DirectTV….its part of the sports package, which is practically worthless because you dont get pro games….they all get blacked out…college b ball games show up though…and this spring training game..so maybe its not completely worthless
Gotta buy the MLB extra innings package as well
where i used to live (Huntington, WV) we got FSN Ohio and Pittsburgh, so I could watch all the Reds games, except the business days specials on Thurs
well, i live in Morgantown, WV now…going to pharmacy school here….i am not sure…i just only get games on FSN Pittsburgh now….I assumed that if you buy MLB.tv, you get all the games…but i will just spring for the 189 or whatever it is and buy MLB Extra Innings so I can watch on TV….sucks that I have to pay now for what I used to get for free….anything for the REDS
HAVOC all year long
it does suck
but i feel like the days of corporate media BS have peaked. it’s just bad business to limit people like this.
if you get direct tv, though, you can pay for mlb.tv if you choose their internet option. it looks like they have some awesome features this year. dvr capability and the ability to choose radio feds over television audio. that sounds awesome.
Interesting
so you just plug your directv dvr into the computer with an ethernet cord, and you can get mlb.tv games like that? interesting….i think mlb.tv is alot cheaper than extra innings
HAVOC all year long
no no
you have to get your internet connection through direct tv. instead of whatever you get. and internet through direct tv is like seventy bucks a month or something. so it probably isn’t cheaper. i don’t know. but it is an alternative. and i thought the dvr feature was cool. it’s mlb premium which is 20 bucks a month plus whatever direct tv internet is. it actually might be cheaper…
oh
ok…well, directv told me that they dont have internet service providers where i live…so i had to get my internet thru comcast….even more shitty….ill probably just suck it up and get mlb extra innings….at least i can watch other games too….i love to watch the other teams in the division and cheer them on to lose, especially the cubs
HAVOC all year long
really?
i just thought since they advertised hughes net every five minutes it was available everywhere.
if you’re interested in saving dough, get one of those S cords and you can hook up your computer to your television. if you have a pc in another room, i guess that doesn’t work. but i’m always for trying to help!
damn, pedro’s being pedro right now.
Havoc!
Bruce flies out.
BP singles to left.
Barker strikes out.
Phil Coke spends a lot of time trying to hold BP on. It works. He guns down BP trying to steal 2B.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Nice diving stop by EdE
Ransom beats the throw, but it was still pretty impressive.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Whoa
A-Gon looking good. 6-4-3 DP.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
And it's a good thing
Since Juan Miranda homers. Bruce would have to be 30 feet tall to get that one.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Gonzo did look nice on that DP….I was really pulling for Kepp for the longest time, or maybe even Hairiston at SS…but if he can pull that off consistently this year…sign him up
HAVOC all year long
They're way ahead of you when it comes to signing Alex Gonzalez
by Brendanukkah on Mar 10, 2009 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions

They already signed Gonzo? When? I thought the Reds were just giving some guy they picked up off Arroyo’s boat a chance to play in some ST games

now only if we could sign T-Pain along with Gonzo….he could probably hit for more power than Juan Castro and Gookie Dawkins combined…with the power of Janish
HAVOC all year long
The other day Juan Castro
went 3-5 with a dong, IIRC.

I then did a google search for “Juan Castro Power”:
No results found for “juan castro power”.
Here is the first picture that comes up:

The dude’s a freaking Matre d’ at the Hotel Villa Magna of Madrid, and his picture comes up over Juan, a veteran MLB player. That’s how little the man is associated with power. How embarrassing. And funny. And sad.
And not a bad euphemism “He has Juan Castro power,” or perhaps juancastropower.com is an idea worth stealing.

A-Gon’s glove looking good (his bat, not so much)

Better than Kepp or Cherry, IMO.
He hasn’t gotten on base yet, though.

you have to watch this nederlands dominicana game. 0-0 top of 6. smit was awesome.

and it helps Team USA if the big bad Dominicans take a seat

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
can't we just go with a six man rotation and save our young arms?
seriously. let harang and arroyo do their five day thing and rotate our other guys. if we had a manager not set in his ways, he’d try it. and maybe give them a relief inning on the off day when they’re supposed to throw hard.
it’s outside the box stuff.
ha ha, but seriously
if we had LaMafia as manager, he might do it. but we got a freaking spit-slimed toothpick.
I'd seriously bat him like 6th on days he pitches
and maybe DH him in inter league games
90 wins in 09!!
i think owings is a prototype
i really believe in the next twenty years teams are going to look for pitchers who can hit. that would be awesome.
f the dh!!!!! ha ha.
Phil Coke pitches out of trouble
Hanigan and Bankston single, but Dickerson grounds into a force out to end the inning.

Fultz nearly decapitates Nady
But Damon is thrown out trying to steal third, ending the inning.
That was really bizarre. Damon didn’t seem in much of a hurry, and seemed surprised he was out.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Kei Igawa gets Janish to ground out
Guess A-Gon’s day is done. He was 0 for 2 with some nice plays on defense.
Someone should tell David Cone it’s a soft-J in Janish.

on the basepaths it consists of slap singles and basestealing by young speedsters. from the mound havoc is aged and overpaid relievers deceptively allowing the opposing team to clog the basepaths

dutch is my very favorite language to look at
and i also love it because it is the most practical language on the planet with very few “exceptions to the rule.”
I was going to take it this semester,
but my Dutch friends all told me pretty much the same thing: “Everyone speaks English here, and if you’re here for more than a month, you’ll start picking it up anyways”
Taking Urdu instead. Its moderately confusing, but Islamabad > Amsterdam anyday! Right! Um, right?

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
i get the standard package
with roadrunner for $70. i get FSN Ohio and that’s really all that matters.

it’s basic direct tv.
i know nothing about tv, but if i do decide to get it, i’m getting direct tv because it’s the only channel i’ll get use out of.
i'll agree with scrabbles and say that during the summer

and the Big 10 network sucks
they show 2 OSU games a season and there were riots when the local cable companies balked at their outrageous demands. and tHom is like a fish out of water calling a futbol game.

don't take this the wrong way because i seriously don't mean it
but i think there is a difference between the fan of a team and betwen a fanatic that watches everthing. i mean marekting wise. like, i’d watch a game between kansas city and pittsburgh, for example, if it’s the onely game on.
if i had tv, i would like to get comedy central for jon stewert and colbert, and i like 30 rock.

Not only that,
but I pay $56 bucks a month for Direct TV, get all the professional sports networks and all HD. If people still have TimeWarner, end that bullshit now.
I don't have a choice
It’s Time Warner or nothing.
Nothing is looking more and more appealing, I must say.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Lots of people can't get DirectTV
You live in an apartment where there’s no place to put the dish. Or your neighbor has tall trees that block the southern horizon.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Or if you live in a cave

Perhaps a a flatbed truck loaded with cadavers will explode in front of a Star Trek convention. One can only dream and hope.
oh, really?
i’ve not lived in one of those places with a billion apartments. i might soon if i move to nyc. i’d just get mlb.tv and use proxy servers to avoid the blackouts.
That thought has crossed my mind
Except MLB.TV is even more evil than Time Warner.

He’s the Yanks’ top prospect now, and considered a total stud.
Me, I’m rooting for Brett Gardner. He really reminds me of Bubba. Little guy, lotta speed, great D. Wears his socks high, and stands in a similar crouch at the plate.
Besides, I’ve given up on Melky Cabrera.

The cadence of the words was similar
That’s it. That’s all the connection there is. It’s not critical, just sort of stream of consciousness. In the end, it means nothing. You just got angry about something you didn’t understand. And we know you know how distasteful a quality that can be in people.
I think even tHan can agree that this WBC tournament has been pretty darn good.

sorry, i'm embarassed
but i had to go to bw3 to watch the game and they make you buy things if you sit and watch one of their five hundred screens especially if you make them change one screen and then another one and they don’t really like it but you have three screens on hockey and a bunch of customers with jeff gordon shirts and you ask them to put baseball on the screen and they get annoyed because you know they aren’t employed to actually serve people but just to stand around and bitch about how they hate working at a chain bar and so you have to buy more things than you want just to make them not overly bitchy and what they sell there is beer.
i’m starving and should have ordered wings.
Apparently I got offline at just the wrong time last night...
as Brendan and Alan have pointed out (thank you guys) I meant no harm in what I was saying. Sometimes I just type what comes into my mind as it happens, and this was one of those instances. Brendan was right that I had been watching Office reruns, and that’s where it came from.

So far
separate Reds and WBC game threads really isn’t working. People end up in the newest thread, talking about both.
I don’t think we have enough traffic to support two separate game threads at the same time.
Especially since there’s no convenient way to follow both, if they are both on the front page (as opposed to on the sidebar, where you can at least see if there are new comments in other threads).
