Leatherpants rides his Segway into the sunset
It was really just a question of when.
Former Reds and current Nationals GM Jim Bowden has resigned. Bowden, of course, has been under FBI investigation for charges that he was skimming bonuses to Latin players. He's also known for his love of toolsy outfielders, and inability to develop Washington's minor leagues (drafting players he couldn't sign, failing to move aging veterans like Alfonso Soriano and Dmitri Young for prospects).
Sadly, his latest imbroglio is also linked to Reds favorite Jose Rijo.
It was at Rijo's Dominican academy that the Nationals organization was introduced to a player it first knew as Esmailyn "Smiley" Gonzalez. He is the Dominican prospect who received a $1.4 million signing bonus in 2006, when the Nationals thought they were signing a 16-year-old shortstop.
Kasten said last week that a Major League Baseball investigation determined Gonzalez was born in November 1985, not Sept. 21, 1989. It was also discovered his real name is Carlos David Alvarez Lugo, Kasten said.
Rijo was fired by the Nationals two days ago.
The Nationals don't have plans to name a new GM to replace the only one that DC has had.
So long, Leatherpants. Continue to get fucked.

justin was on top of this, too
But like a Phillip J. Fry novella, his FanPost was a prison of plot holes and spelling errors. Sorry justin.
no problem
yours is better written. Firefox doesn’t give me the little red squiggly lines when I write fanposts. Except when I actually write the word “fanpost”

Mark Sheldon made me laugh with this tidbit
Former Reds GM Jim Bowden resigned from the Nationals this morning. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Marty Brennaman so giddy.
Marty's life is good
Sunday morning mimosas in Florida AND Bowden resigned. Wonder if he lit a Cuban to complete the trifecta…

Krivsky is probably available
He might not even have to move.

Krivsky might be a good choice
This is definitely a team that needs to build at all levels of the organization. Krivsky has shown that he can do that. They have a good pitching prospect in Jordan Zimmermann and should select Stephen Strasburg in the draft, so their young pitching should be in a pretty good place soon. He might not enjoy having Adam Dunn again though.

no game thread today?
The Reds are supposed to face the fearsome Alfredo Aceves in about half an hour.

all they could get for Wily Mo in the well-coiffed guitar playing pitcher dept.
at this point is Barry Zito.

Why stop now?
Just because Bowden’s gone doesn’t mean they can’t continue to hire former Reds folks.
Phone's ringing, Dude.
Are there any left?

I wish the Nationals would now hire Dusty Baker.

Don't they have to hire Dan O'Brien first?

Let me get this straight,
Jose Rijo is married to Natalie Imbruglia? I, for one, am very confused.

It should be noted that Federal Baseball is in deep mourning today...
They marked the end of an era with the headline “Bowden Resigns! Bowden Resigns! Bowden Resigns!”
Rijo
Hopefully he doesn’t become the fall guy in this. And bring him to Cincy, give him a job and lets play some ball.
90 wins in 09!!
ermmmm
I’m not so sure about that. I know I linked to Slate.com’s report on Dominican baseball way back when it came out, but I think it’s worth looking at again now.
The article writes pretty glowingly of Rijo, but its pretty obvious that there’s not a whole lot of oversight or anti-corruption measures going on there. I could see Rijo’s “Mountain of Dreams” turning out a whole lot like a Matt Christopher book pretty quickly.

I wouldn't doubt it.
I never really felt that Jose was an angel.
Unrelated and irrelevant, but doesn’t Juan Marichal kinda look like Saddam Hussein?
