Bargain price for Andruw Jones

The Rangers are going to sign Andruw Jones to a minor league deal.  If he makes the major league team, he'll only make $500,000, with the opportunity to earn $1 million in incentives.  That's right, the Rangers will get full use of Jones for no more than $1.5 million, while the Dodgers still owe him $22.1 million.

Granted, Jones had a terrible year last year, even worse than Corey Patterson.  He hit .158 with 3 HR and 14 RBI.  Just atrocious numbers.  But he was also an elite player not too long ago.  The Rangers get a chance to perhaps get something near that production for the major league minimum.  Meanwhile, it will be a miraculous happening if we get 3 HR all season from our center fielder all year, and we gave him a two year deal.

I see this kind of deal, and Pat Burrell's contract and can't help but wonder what might have happened if Jocketty was just a little bit better at playing hardball.  Sigh.

this deal is a no-brainer for the Rangers

and the Reds, and pretty much every team in the league. a non-guaranteed deal for a guy who just as recently as ‘06 OPS’d .900 while playing spectacular defense in CF is borderline nuts. sure, everything says this guy has fallen off the cliff, but the what-ifs are too tempting to pass up. and he’ll be just 32 next season. im willing to bet he has a better year than T-Virus.

i like Viva la Vida

but i would absolutely adore it if the production wasnt so grand and bombastic. the lyrics and music have a nice, reflective, somber minor-key kinda mood, but the huge timpanis and string arrangements totally ruin that. nice effort though.

that's eno's fault

In the game I saw here in December

Andruw Jones was the only member of the Auguilas who hit a line drive. Yes, the team (with EdE y J-Cuest) was that bad in December, but I think he might have something left in him.

Tanzen!

by Madville on Feb 8, 2009 8:12 PM EST reply actions

lets understand what kind of people we are dealing with

jones was an elite player recently, but has been one of the worst the last two years. should we really wish that dusty had to choose whether to put him in the lineup over dickerson or gomes? jones wouldnt get benched until he struck out for the 50th time in april, and in the process flung his bat into the dugout, striking dusty squarely between the eyes.

hey, someone should actually do that. like, on purpose. might knock his neurons back in place. clock is ticking, who is going to step up to the plate?

by saboscork on Feb 8, 2009 8:59 PM EST reply actions

My thoughts

were that it would be Jones at 1.5 mill as opposed to T-Virus at 3 per for the next 2. I think Dickerson would be more than capable as a starting CF, were the hypothetical Jones to fail. Frankly, I would have signed a f^%$ing decent LF this off-season or moved EdE, so the whole point would be moot.

by obc2 on Feb 8, 2009 9:35 PM EST up reply actions

less competition in cincy

even though there should be more competition in their outfield going into the spring. the rangers have plenty of outfielders who are beginning to be good, as opposed to jones, who has only recently started to be bad.

Meet the Rangers hitting coach:

There are only two seasons - winter and Baseball. - Bill Veeck

by PeteyHendrix on Feb 9, 2009 1:02 AM EST up reply actions

Here's the problem...

Andruw Jones has always been a max effort swing-from-the-heels hitter. That’s great when the batspeed is fast enough to compensate, but his bat has slowed considerably. He still has solid plate discipline, but he’s not able to turn on the pitches he used to. Then add that’s he’s lost multiple steps in CF versus his prime and you have a player who’s struggling to find his place in the game right now.

The Braves were right to let him go considering what the Dodgers were offering him. Jones has produced Line Drive rates averaging 16.28% since 2004 and hasn’t produce a LD rate as high as 21% over the past seven seasons. His HR/FB rates for 2005 (25.2) and 2006 (22.0) masked his LD rate deficiency, but 2007 showed us what might happen should he couple lower LD rates and more normal HR/FB rates.

While the Rangers took a good gamble on the guy to the tune of only 500K, Jones has been a good CF in reputation only for the past few seasons, which frames him for a corner outfield slot he can likely defend decently, but one that’ll also leave him many Runs under league average offensively. If I were a Rangers fan, I’d thank goodness that the team didn’t pay a premium for his potential “upside”, but I’d also be a bit worried that he’ll take a goodly number of PA away from other potential corner OF options that might just project to be more valuable. Double ditto should Jones be slotted for CF.

I reiterate.

welcome

while i agree on all points concerning Jones and his declining performance, the fact remains that since Jones hit the market the Reds signed Willy Taveras for 6.25 million dollars, and Jonny Gomes and Jacque Jones to minor league deals. this gives the Reds 6 outfielders vying for time, including Jay Bruce, Chris Dickerson, and Norris Hopper. I can say with near-certainty that Jay Bruce will be worth more than Andruw Jones next season, but i cant say with any certainty that the other 5 will be.

and this is precisely why it would have been a good idea for the Reds to give Jones a shot on a minor league deal. is he washed up? it’s likely. but given the choice between him at half a mil and Taveras at 6 mil, i take Jones 9 outta 10 times. J. Jones and Gomes are on the same contracts basically, so that’s a wash. but neither of them has ever shown the kind of Hall of Fame production that Andruw has. my point is that the Reds woefully overspent when shopping for the OF when A) we already had a decent platoon in-house in Dickerson/Hopper and B) cheaper and potentially better options were readily available, and wouldnt have required a 2 year commitment. Andruw Jones is not the answer to all the Reds problems. he’s just a perfect example to illustrate how poorly the OF situation was handled this off-season.

My millions are unconventional!

by PeteyHendrix on Feb 9, 2009 1:06 AM EST up reply actions

Good points...

Within the context of what the Reds have actually done this offseason, I agree that the pursuit/signing of A. Jones to a minor league deal wouldn’t have been an awful move. That being said, what the Reds have done this offseason isn’t anything resembling good so what we have is a comparative analysis of bad moves they could have made versus bad moves they did make. I think we’d both prefer a much better starting point than that, especially considering that a suppressed market offered the opportunity for the team to do much better things at better prices.

So while I agree that A. Jones represented something close to the risk of other substandard options brought in, I think the very fact we’re discussing him as a viable option versus those truly highlights how futile this offseason has been for the Reds. But that’s what happens when we’re left comparing scraps from a dumpster dive because the team isn’t willing to pony up for a good meal in the restaurant.

Don’t get me wrong; I’m all for finding good value on the cheap. I’d just rather the team focus on bringing in players who didn’t project some form of suck in the first place. Get some of those guys and then taking a flier on a project like Jones makes a bit more sense IMHO.

by SteelSD on Feb 9, 2009 10:23 AM EST up reply actions

For instance..

Right now it appears that sometime in January, a shrewd GM could have signed both Adam Dunn and Andruw Jones for significantly less than what it was expected to get only Dunn.

by Fat Vegas Alan on Feb 9, 2009 10:33 AM EST up reply actions

That's exactly right...

Grabbing a performer of Dunn’s caliber (it didn’t specifically have to be Dunn) and then taking a flier on a guy like A. Jones makes a lot more sense than just adding Jones to a likely pile of suck, IMHO. It allows Jones to attempt to ease himself back into things and if he suddenly (even though it’s unlikely) finds his performance to be in the zip code of the previously “good” Jones, you might find yourself with a pretty interesting accelerated window of opportunity. So yeah, it makes complete sense if you bring in a guy like Jones if he’s looked at as a question surrounded by actual answers rather than a potential answer himself, especially if he’s being brought in by a team who’s offense is already suppressed.

by SteelSD on Feb 9, 2009 11:31 AM EST up reply actions

it didn’t specifically have to be Dunn

Steel, you’re new here. It has to be Dunn.
