What the hell are we doing?

The Reds have just signed Jacque Jones and Daryle Ward to minor league deals.  Ward is listed as a first baseman, which is news to me.  I guess we needed depth at first base since Valentin is gone.  It bears mentioning that both of them are 33, both are crappy, and both are left-handed.  I'm really not sure what to make of these deals.  They'll be used as bench filler, but I have no idea how they make us better as a team.

As for the minor league deals?  Yeah, Corey Patterson was signed to one of those too.

I don't mind Ward making the team

If everyone was healthy, we were looking at a bench of Keppinger, Hairston (or Dickerson if platoon plan is still in tact), Hanigan, and Gomes. I think adding Ward at GABP as a bench player is a nice move.

Jacque Jones on the other hand, no thanks. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t make the team, but I guess he could provide decent insurance at AAA. We are one Jay Bruce injury away from an outfield of Hairston, Taveras, and Hopper.

We all predicted this last year, and now it’s happened. We might as well sign Neifi Perez and get it overwith.

I think it's still Dickerson-Taveras-Bruce

Hairston and Gomes are still in the mix to platoon with Dickerson. But Chris better go out and have himself a monster spring, because Dusty’s makes moves that seem really intent on screwing him.

Bruce in RF and Taveras in CF seem to be the starters penciled in.

As for LF, they have Chris Dickerson, Norris Hopper and Johnny Gomes (probably) in the running for the starter’s spot.

Dickerson can also play CF.

I didn’t think Jocko would be liable to fall into the same trap.

Dusty must have eyes that Wayne and Walt get lost in. Somehow he continues to be persuasive.

Here

“Jones, 34 in April, hit .147/.239/.207 in 134 plate appearances for the Tigers and Marlins last year. Jones played winter ball and had laser eye surgery this winter.”

Oh, everything’s fine then. That .446 OPS was because he needed Laser eye surgery. Don’t worry, you guys!

Patterson: .582 OPS, 392 PA
Bako: .626, 328
J Jones: .446, 134
A Jones: .505, 238

so yeah, the Jones’ were worse, but Patterson and Bako play alot more. sad really.

From Lance McAlister's blog

At TheLotD

Look at those stats he used for this post. Tremendous. Are those the best he could find for Jones?

“Jones, 33, last season appeared in 42 games with Detroit and Florida.
In his career, Jones has played in in 21 playoff games, including both Division Series (2002-04, 2007) and the 2002 American League Championship Series. He has a 20 career leadoff homers and a .287 lifetime average with runners in scoring position.”

i dont think this is anything to get worked up about

Ward is actually pretty good as a pinch hitter (well, better than LLM) and that is pretty much is raison d’etre anymore. he’s nothing more than a 25th man candidate. as for Jones, i’m confident that Walt wont let Dusty walk all over him. i dont mind giving Jones a non-roster invite, i mean, that’s just Dusty looking out for a buddy. isnt it?

im still willing to give Walt the benefit of the doubt.

i totally agree

Dusty-proofing the roster should be Walt’s #2 priority (we all know what #1 is). but baseball is nothing if not a sickening display of cronyism, and i really believe signing Jaque Jones to a minor league deal is really nothing more than giving him a chance to play a bit in Spring Training to audition should someone else need a crappy soft-hitting LF with decent defense. but you are right, if Jones is playing LF and hitting second with Dickerson down in L’ville i will…change my avatar to something very embarrassing until the All-Star break!

and in his defense, Jones had a good year in ’06. maybe he just needs Dusty around to motivate him? /ducks

Well stated, Charlie.

What if in the last week Walt had signed to minor league contracts and given spring training invites to: Jorge Velandia, Pablo Ozuna, Jake Woods, Marcus Giles, Paul Hoover, Jason Ellison, Gary Majewski and Yorman Bazardo?

The Philles did that. The world champion Phillies. Granted, minor league fodder has had a way of making it onto the big league roster in Cincinnati in recent years, but these moves are all right. Ward could have some value off the bench. Unless Jones has an amazing spring, he’s not likely to make the club. And if he does, I’ll deny every writing this, no matter what proof you have.

Ward really hasn't been a starter that much

never has hit for power,or average, or stole bases, or what did he do ? Nnot much a career, he’s a good looking guy so maybe Dusty’s doing a little match making…(he never really liked Corey – had to play him to please his daughter!)

Jones had some pop and had a fairly decent career
take out 2008 and for the previous 9 seasons:
.329 OBP
.453 SLG
100 OPS

Averaged about 135 games a year
Averaged 485 PAs a year
Not far off from EdE’s 1st four years.

He’s gonna be 34 and last year he sucked the root. Don’t what we;d do with either of these guys except have them as AAA backup…at least Jones appears to have had a bit of power over the years Averaged 21 dingers from 2000 through 2006. But apparently he’s declined quickly and is now blind.

Dusty must really be in heaven –
VP Presence – T-Virus, Gnomenuts, Cherry, ol’ man Weathers, Jack Jones and Gary War’s kid…

Long season – I hope you guys are prepared to entertain me with your scintillating wit, wisdom and sabremetric humor.

here's Sheldon's take on the signings

basic stuff, but there was this little diddy:

“Although there are nearly 100 free agents still seeking teams on the market, Jocketty indicated the Reds would not make any more last-minute additions before camp opened on Feb. 14. "I’m still getting a lot of calls from agents,” Jocketty said. “We exceeded our limit on the number of players we wanted to bring to camp, but you want to have the right people that can help. We’ll see.”

so for those of you who are still simmering over these guys, rest assured that there wont be any more jerks like this coming to camp. so no Neifi Perez! hooray!

For several years, the cards and Cubs inexplicably kept signing each others’ castoffs, kind of like how the Dodgers and Giants keep swapping each others’ rosters. Now Walt can’t stop himself. I don’t think this garbage is Dusty’s doing. Walt would be signing ex-cubs no matter what team he was running. Some people are giving him way too much credit. I’m looking at you scrabbles.

Nothing really surprises me anymore

Everything about the entire Jocketty era screams Dusty. Trade away best offensive player because he clogs up the bases? Check. Allow the team’s two most valuable young arms to log pointless innings in pointless September games? Check. Make a big splash in free agency by signing the poor man’s Juan Pierre? Check. Refuse to sign impact bat because said impact bat would most likely clog up the bases? Check. Sign two utterly useless players because they’re the manager’s buddies? Check.

Seriously, has anyone ever seen Dusty and Jocketty in the same room? Because it seems to me like Dusty is making all of the personnel decisions.

if he would just resign Dunn, that trade would look like a pretty good move.

of course, he’d have to brainwash Marty…

Whoops there's all kinds of perverted stuff around the WFT blanket video

Didn’t know that was gonna happen – somebody better delete this before I’m banned again.

Bring back Bubba Crosby

Hey, why not? Let’s go for an all-lefty taxi squad.

I think he has retired

Though a lot of players retire, then change their minds.

I hadn’t realized how long the odds were against a pro baseball player trying to come back from arm surgery.

Not bothered so much

I seem to remember complaints on this very blog concerning the Reds’ lightweight bench last year. Say what you will about Jones and Ward, but they bring pop to the bench. Also, when they do make it into the starting lineup, the team can still hit doubles and home runs. It’s not ideal, though, I know. I’m sure we turned down Abreu for these guys. And I’m sure Dusty was working it all behind the scenes.

What about Sean Henry? How come I don’t see where the Reds is fitting him in the scheme of things. The players they are getting are not as good as Henry. It does not make any sense. Sean Henry did so well in the Arizona Fall League and does not get invited to Big League Camp? Duh?? Drew Stubbs goes instead?

by francessc on Feb 11, 2009 12:33 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Well

Stubbs plays gold glove level defense in CF and Henry doesn’t hit well enough to be a corner outfielder. I think Henry will probably be a decent player, though not likely an everyday starter in the bigs, but his numbers just aren’t that impressive enough to play in a corner spot in the outfield. If his power develops, maybe, but he needs a lot more power at this point.

I think they're covering a little bit

Stubbs is probably closer to playing the majors at this point, and he’s the former top 10 pick, not Henry.
