Spring Game 4 Thread: Reds at Red Sox

MLB Florida and Arizona Spring Training - SB Nation

Lineup

Cincinnati Reds @ Boston Red Sox

02/28/08 7:05 PM EDT

CINcinnati reds
Boston red sox
Drew Stubbs - CF Julio Lugo - SS
Jerry Hairston Jr. - SS Brad Wilkerson - CF
Joey Votto - 1B David Ortiz - DH
Edwin Encarnacion - 3B J.D. Drew - RF
Jay Bruce - RF Jason Bay - LF
Jonny Gomes - DH Jason Varitek - C
Jacque Jones - LF Chris Carter - 1B
Danny Richar - 2B Nick Green - 3B
Ramon Hernandez - C Gil Velazquez - 2B

Nick Masset toes the rubber for the Reds to start tonight's game.  Masset, as you know, is strangely competing for the 5th starter spot on a team packed with potential 5th starters.  He was a starter for most of his time in the minors, but has just 2 career starts in the Majors in 77 career games.  I know competition is supposedly a good thing, but on a team that already has Micah Owings, Homer Bailey, Ramon Ramirez, Daryl Thompson, and Matt Maloney, I still can't figure out why they are trying to use Masset - who has never had as much success as a starter as any of these guys - in the starting role.  I remain convinced that their plan is to use him in long relief out of the pen and this starter stuff is just to stretch him out.

The Red Sox will counter with phenom Clay Buchholz.  The 24-year old Buchholz was dominant in the minors, but struggled in 15 starts with the Sox last year, going just 2-9 with a 6.75 ERA.  I don't follow it, but I'm sure there are hundreds of articles in Red Sox nation saying that this is a make or break year for Buchholz.  I mean, if there are tens of them for Homer Bailey in Cincinnati, I can't imagine how Sox fans aren't blowing Buchholz out of proportion.

If you are interested in who made the trip tonight, here is the travel roster (PDF).  Interesting that Willy Taveras is making the trip, but Drew Stubbs is getting the start.  I'm looking forward to seeing what Stubbs can do, which is why I'm disappointed that I'll miss the first few innings tonight.  Stupid social life.

The game is on 700WLW tonight, so be sure to tune in.

by fourrunhomer on Feb 28, 2009 7:22 PM EST up reply actions

so

to me that is evidence of bush’s tanking the economy. do you see it otherwise?

by saboscork on Feb 28, 2009 7:24 PM EST up reply actions

Actually

I see it as more Congess’ fault than any President. Things really took a nose dive after the ’06 elections. But this has been in the making for a long time. The need for instant gratification, wellfare society, greed, all play a role and it is not all political. I believe it would be helpful though if government stayed out of many of the things it forces itself into. Unfortunately, government tends to grow in tough economic times.
  Anyway, back to baseball

by fourrunhomer on Feb 28, 2009 7:32 PM EST up reply actions

do you need me to post links about the declining economy from 2004-2005?

i remember a particular article from the boston globe published in 2005.

why do you think congress changed hands in 2006 anyway? if things were so peachy, it would not have happened.

economic crises of this nature take years to develop.

I'm trying to listen to the game

On the computer because i usually can’t pick up WLW over the air. Being three hours from Cincy makes it difficult. Occasionally, I can pick up the signal but not tonight.

When I click on the listen live link on 700WLW.Com, I get an error message that the page can’t be found. Does anyone know if pre-season games are Blacked Out on the radio? Or do I just have another problem?

by fourrunhomer on Feb 28, 2009 7:21 PM EST reply actions

really? where are you?

i used to get WLW in Washington DC. Not very good, but that’s a long way. Eight and a half hours.

by Daedalus on Feb 28, 2009 7:23 PM EST up reply actions

Between

Huntington and Charleston WV. The closer to Huntington the better the signal, but it’s hit or miss.

Favorite Dusty Quotes

after a Red takes a walk. “He just needs to be a little more agressive at the plate. It will come with time. I remember my first spring, I took a walk. Hank Aaron came up to me and got onto me for clogging the bases.”
After same Red gets picked off first “I like his agressiveness on the bases. It shows he’s thinking. Unclogging the bases like that.”

I’m fine with him at SS. I think he’ll hit pretty well at GABP.

I don’t want to see Cherry or Kepp at SS. Though if A-Gon can’t play, I think it’s probably going to be Cherry.
