Talks about Marty and leadership and not showing anger. I miss him so much. :( (So much that I'm clearly stalking him) :(

This screams for the "i miss dunner" tag

This statement caught my attention
It’s so much harder on them. They watch every single game. It makes them mad, obviously. That is the problem over there. It’s very negative. I don’t want to lump the entire media. There are very good guys over there, but there are very negative people over there. I think that’s a big problem over there. It’s sad.

Given how many media members are lauding the fact that Griffey and Dunn being gone is good for the clubhouse, it’s interesting to me to see Dunn take a shot back at them. I’d guess that both sides are right.

I still don't know if I'm buying the media's take on this.

When it comes to Griffey?…maybe. Sure, he was the albatross in the room and the 800-pound gorilla around the neck. He’s evidently not the leader type and he’s evidently something of a pouty diva with his own idea of how to handle perceived slights. Maybe that makes him “clubhouse cancer.” On the other hand, the Reds have been a losing organization that can’t get out of its own way for a long time and I guess that if I’m KGJ and my contract in Cincinnati is nearing its end and the biggest free agent I see brought in to compete in a relatively weak NL Central is Fransisco Cordero, well that tells me. “Go ahead and hit number 500, kid. Thanks.” Maybe you get what you give and you give what you get.

But Dunn? I’m not gonna see him as a detriment to the team. He wasn’t going to do any harm to anybody. It was just that he couldn’t be the all-encompassing offensive threat that some in the organization wanted him to be. It’s been said many times before- he was a piece of puzzle that was never fully put together in Cincinnati. Maybe they’ll do it in DC.

It occurs to me now that perhaps signing Gary Sheffield in recent years could have made Junior happy and helped to get the most out of Dunn. We coulda been contenders!

The rumors

Were that Griffey and Dunn were pretty lazy and more importantly would openly mock anyone busting their hump as a kiss-ass.

Not my opinion as I wouldn’t know. Just what I’ve heard said.

I think all of this is he said she said stuff

because you’ll have one group of people telling you that nobody works harder than Jr. and another group that says that he doesn’t care or is lazy. I think it’s a case of people believing and remembering whatever fits their world view.

A theory on negativity and the media

Is this the residuals of the Marge Schott and Jim Bowden times? I won’t re-hash all the downsides (God knows they are legendary), and I’ll acknowledge their positives: has anyone truly loved the Reds fan more than Marge? Leatherpants was certainly creative give the limitations put on him by the ownership groups he served and he certainly never quit grinding. He was kinda’ like the guy at the poker table that plays every single hand he is dealt. But both of them certainly distanced the club from the media, whether through being cheap or being distrustful. In turn, the city and fans get distanced as they rely on the media for their contact.
When you have these situations, it’s not enough to just go back to doing it right. Just consider anytime you’ve tried to make up with a spouse/significant other. No, you have to go above and beyond to speed the healing. The Reds Caravan and the Reds Fest have been good steps toward that. Dollar dog nights and similar promos have helped, too. To complete the thaw, it’d be great to have a fan-friendly quote machine in the clubhouse to make this team more lovable (to the masses). Anyone have any candidates— either on the roster or someone on another team that could be a model for this type of role?

I was watching the replay of the CLE/AZ game last night.

Lots of live on-the-field during-the-game interviews with Indians’ coaches and players. It was pretty good stuff because while some of it was certainly the same regurgetated “one game at a time” pap, a lot of it was exactly the kind of information that a fan might want to see and hear from Spring Training. Who’s new? Who’s gonna compete for the fifth spot? Who’s gonna go to AAA and come up later in the season? It held my attention because I don’t follow the Tribe’s every roster move (especailly in the off-season) so a lot of what they were telling me was news to me.

Anyway, it got me thinking that MLB teams should more often provide that kind of general overview from the perspective of folks within the organization (coaches, players, scouts, front office paper pushers) and they should put it on the internet and they should have their media relations folks email links to any nerd in a basement with a blog about their teams.

And then… their general managers should hold monthly “State of the Organization” addresses. And they should have their media relations folks mail press credentials to the aforemention basement-dwellers and they should allow the blogginerds to ask questions of the GMs.

And all the while they should advertise exclusive internet-only-accessible ticket plans. And they should push 2010 ST vacation packages to the new digs in Arizona. (Prevailing marketing and demographic theories hold that the internet fan base is a better educated and often wealthier fan base.)

And they should have Bloggers Night at the ballpark. Y’know, an entire section or two reserved for the fans who like to think that they know their team best and they like to share what they know about their teams. Kind of a slow-burn viral marketing campaign.

And to answer your question Red: Mark De Rosa. I don’t think I’d ever heard him speak before last night but he impressed me as a good guy who likes baseball and likes whatever team he’s on and likes all of his teammates enough to present information and anecdotes about them in a safe and non-threatening way.

And on the Reds? It’s gonna be Bruce and even moreso Votto. Cincinnati will love Bruce once the Reds play ~.500 ball for a season or two. And I think Votto could be Aaron to Bruce’s Moses.

I'm recommending this for the title bar for RR.

Really? Maybe Joe Gibbs helped with the pitch.

The leadership answer is interesting given the stuff we’ve heard from Arroyo.

Dunn is getting old enough and has enough 'clout'

to lead a team like the Nats. He’s got friends over there and it is a very young team.

If the Nats fire Jimbo and get a decent GM they could turn that franchise around in a couple/three years.

We all know how negative sMarty’s become…its very professional of Dunn to say that Marty is Marty ect. but is very hard for me to believe that he has any respect for sMarty and Clownboy. But it must have brought Dunn down a peg or two for it to take so long to get signed and then not get the money that he was expecting.
