Orlando Cabrera at short?
So what if Alex Gonzalez's knee is A-Gon? He's already missing the first week of practice.
I've always liked Orlando Cabrera and he does fill Dusty's adage: Shortstop hits No. 2.
He'd make a nice stopgap until Frazier is ready. Keppinger could go back to being a utility infielder, and Cherry could be the OFF DAY fill-in player for the other five spots.
What are the chances, the Reds sign Orlando for a 1-year deal?

I think he'd be a great fit.
But with this being a rebuilding year, it would be a waste of cash, would piss of Knee Bass, and might retard the development of Todd Frazier or Chris Valaika.

That shouldn't be that big of a reason
Per Joe Sheehan BP subscription required:
For all of the hue and cry about the compensation system this winter, the scheme for Type-A free agents isn’t all that restrictive. The clause that prevents picks in the top 15 from being forfeited dramatically reduces the value they can return, and separates the image of a First-Round Pick! from the reality. Furthermore, the supplemental picks serve to lower the real cost of signing Type-A free agents for teams in the top 15 of the draft, knocking their second-round selections deep into the player pool. If anything, it appears that the teams in that part of the draft are being far too conservative in a market where players are cheap; the associated costs are so small that compensation can be ignored, leaving just your team’s needs, the projected value of the player, and his salary.
I thought the article was interesting and I just wanted to play around with block quotes and hyperlinks. Why is there a box around this last paragraph?

If we didn't have Gonzalez
I would say do it. But since we have his payroll, we have to go with him (if healthy) or one of the backups (Keppinger, Hairston, Janish).
Speaking of all of this, if the Reds don’t think Valakia or Frazier are MLB Shortstops, why not move Brandon Phillips now? Think in two years:
LF- Votto
CF- Stubbs
RF- Bruce
3B- Francisco
SS-Phillips
2B- Frazier or Valakia
1B- Alonso
C- Hanigan

damn!
I forgot all about that. Seriously, thought this makes so much sense to me. Maybe it will happen in next year when Sea Bass is gone, or once the Reds are out of things this year.

I doubt Frazier plays 2B
he’s kinda big for 2B. I’d say he’s more likely to end up at 3B or OF if he doesn’t play SS.

How can you be too big for 2B but be ok for shortstop?
I don’t know how to write this in a way that doesn’t sound rude, but i don’t mean it to be so.

because I said so
it just seems like bigger guys don’t play the position. Only 5 players 6’3" or taller have played more than 100 games at 2B in a season for a combined 11 such seasons. Alexei Ramirez was the first to do it in 30 years last year.
There have been 15 such players at SS for a combined 70 seasons (including 47 in the last 25 years).
I don’t know if there is a bias or a legitimate reason, but that’s the way it is.

Red Oester Cult
Ron immediately came to mind. Though a beanpole, he seemed pretty lanky. Per BBRef, 6-2, 190 lbs. The 1981 perm mighta’ bumped him to 6-3, though:

Interesting (to me) to look at his line since that was the Stone Age— no one talked OPS or K/BB ratios; Fantasy leagues were called “Rotisserie” and tallied by hand from box scores while you walked to school uphill in the snow; but that was OK because you only got a handful of Reds games on TV,anyhow— usually on UHF channel 19. But I digress.
Ronnie for his career: .256/.323/.356, OPS+ 87; Best Season (1981): .271/.342/.398, OPS+ 109

He was supposedly one of Marge's favorites
and hung on with the team a couple of years later than he otherwise might have.

from what I remember,
he also played really good defense, and played a pretty second base down the stretch in 1990 when either Bobby Doran or the great Mariano Duncan was injured. Huge pinch hit in the 1990 World Series.

BP is tough to move
I thought his extension was a good idea at the time but with the market tanking it doesn’t look so hot. Plus, if he’s traded the last year of the extension (‘12) changes from a team to a mutual option, for $12M. I think he’s here until ’11.

I think he was talking about moving BP defensively, not trading him
