SIS - Three Favorite Movies edition

(COVINGTON, KY) --- I'm thoroughly enjoying a rather warm-ish afternoon today even though its going to dip below freezing this evening and possibly bring overnight snow showers.   The typical Ohioan or Kentuckian cannot deal with any sort of precipitation so I already know tomorrow is gonna suck.  None of this is pertinent or interesting but its eating characters, m'kay?

What's your three favorite movies?

Not the three best flicks but your three favorite.  As in the ones you like the most. Not the ones that you think you should list to earn cool points.

Shawshank was on my last cut list

One of the rare movies that holds up well under the TNT/TBS hack job to insert commercials.

As Good as it Gets is great,

but TBS shows it like 300 times a year. Greg Kinnear kicked ass in that movie.

SuperBad

by Charlie Scrabbles on Feb 18, 2009 4:53 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

You could make a case.

Ghostbusters is certainly as worthy, but much more of an ensemble piece. Groundhog Day wasn’t nearly as original. But Bill carries Quick Change…he directed it and is in nearly every scene. The other two were written by the fabulous Harold Ramis, and have his feel to them, rather than the more pure Bill Murray flavor of QC. Plus, I’d trade Ernie Hudson + dated sfx for Jason Robards and Kurtwood Smith any day.

Tough to cut out Animal House and Pulp Fiction, but SuperBad, Quick Change, and Willy are the way to go.

Damn, do you know how to flirt with a fan of softie sentimental movies.

I think “In America” was on my list from last year’s Fav Flicks SIS.

This year, I tried to come up with three movies that I would stop what I was doing and watch at least fifteen minutes if I stumbled upon them. My list is somewhere near te bottom of the thread (or the top depending on how you’ve got RR formatted.)

Since you didn’t ask, here are my four-year old’s three favorites:

E.T.
The Iron Giant
Wall-E
The Red Balloon
Curious George

I listed five because the first three are very much the same movie. I say that with no disrespect towards any of them. They’re all very well-crafted and amazing.

agree'd

Good choice introducing E.T., FVA. It’s not like Little Vegas Alan (Allie?) saw an E.T. commercial or a Disney trailer, you had to go out of your way for that. That beat’s my 4 year old’s obsession with all three High School Musical movies.

by "Red" Moskau on Feb 19, 2009 5:36 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Nah. I'll just dump it all here at Red Reporter.

Preston was watching The Wizard of Oz and The Red Balloon right around the time he first started expressing interest in television. (~2.5?) I had previously given it a lot of thought and I knew that I wanted him to know from an early age that a movie could be completey strange and magical without being animated and that not every movie about children had to featue wise-cracking children with adults stumbling over themselves to somehow incorporate potty humor.

He loved The Wizard of Oz so much and he would try to sing and dance along with the gang whenever they hit the yellow brick road. So I tried to think of another quality muscial that a very young child might enjoy. He still asks for it to this day.

The Lady Vanishes
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre

After Third Man it’s basically a toss up. I’m not trying to go super old school, but more than half of my dvd collection is pre-1960 and if I feel like spinning a movie in the background it will most likely be a film noir.

I'll take Quick Change over Inside Man as the better bank robbery flick

Inside Man started off really strong then loses its way and meanders too much. At some point Denzel tells Clive Owen, “You’re stalling” but the problem is so is the film for a long stretch. I also didn’t care for the ending. I almost put Do the Right Thing on my more recent list.

Wondering if he ever thought of us and hoping that maybe we’d broadened his horizons a little even if he couldn’t remember just how they got broadened. But still I hadn’t dreamt nothing about me until the end. And this was cloudier cause it was years, years away. But I saw an old couple being visited by their children, and all their grandchildren too. The old couple weren’t screwed up. And neither were their kids or their grandkids. And I don’t know. I broke my "No Tom Hanks rule"

to see that turd of a movie. Although I’m strangely looking forward to Angels & Demons…maybe because that book was better than DaVinci.

My “No Tom Hanks rule” started after Forrest Gump and Philadelphia. I hated Forrest Gump so much I therefore hated Hanks. I’ve never seen Saving Private Ryan or The Green Mile because of Hanks.

God…Forrest Gump. That steaming pile of crap won Best Picture ahead of Shawshank AND Pulp Fiction. Just crazy. Speaking of Best Picture, a co-worker of mine (whose opinion I value) has seen all the current Best Pic nominees…and says The Wrestler (which I really, really liked) was better than all of them.

Cool baseball moment in Freaks and Geeks

One of the geeks gets really excited to play baseball (softball?) in gym class, but he’s always picked last, cuz he’s a geek, and stuck out in backup right field where nothing happens. He just wants a chance to play shortstop because who knows? Maybe he’ll be good at it. Then he prank calls the gym teacher pretending to be the father of one of the other kids who always gets picked near the end, and the gym teacher promises him that he’ll rectify the situation. The geek gets a smile on his face and says, “We get to play baseball. I can’t wait for tomorrow!”

It’s all in the delivery, really, but it kills me. I see a lot of this community in that sentiment, because let’s face it, an internet community is pretty geeky. But tomorrow, we get to play baseball. Or talk about baseball. And it seems like there’s nothing else I’d rather do.

I never read Fever Pitch

But the Colin Firth adaptation was enjoyable. He’s believable as a restrained neurotic. I liked Fallon on SNL but I just can’t see him as a serious actor. There was also a lot of contrived nonsense in the Red Sox version – the part where they discuss the Curse at Fenway was painful.

I liked About A Boy, though I wish they had kept it set in the ‘90s. I also think How To Be Good would translate well as a movie and am surprised it hasn’t happened.

I've been looking for an opening to bring this up

A League of Their Own

Did Dottie throw the World Series by intentionally dropping the ball on the final play?

The case for: she didn’t care about baseball—she only tried out on Kit’s behest, she abandons the team right before the Series—she’s clearly affected by seeing her sister crying in the dugout*, she feels guilty about getting Kit traded, she has 6 inches and 40 pounds on her sister and has never been anything less than the perfect ballplayer.

The case against: she correctly informs the pitcher that Kit’s weakness is high fastballs. This is just vicious in a sweep-the-leg way. You’d think that if she decided to help her sister out it would have been right after she saw Kit’s dugout breakdown. Instead she goes for the jugular and we don’t see any sign that she wavers in her decision. The scene might have played better if the camera stayed with Kit in the batter’s box and we didn’t know whether Dottie was telling Ellen Sue to throw the lady or the tiger.

*By the way this might be the worst managing move in cinema history. You HAVE to pinch hit for Kit. She’s sobbing uncontrollably. She was in no condition to bat. It’s no wonder she quickly falls behind. The Racine coach would have been canned if she struck out. Maybe he should be anyways since the result doesn’t necessarily justify the decision and it only worked out because Dottie took a dive (maybe).

by Red Menace on Feb 19, 2009 5:18 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

No, she didn't throw it

All that sex with her returned war-hero husband weakened her just enough, and she wasn’t able to adjust her grip on the ball.

And if you don’t like that answer, then I’m gonna go with, “She always chokes in the playoffs. She’s not a true Rockford Peach!”

It was fine, I suppose

because of Depp and the small guy. It just pissed me off that he was even attempting a remake. The first movie was perfect in my eyes.

by Pops Daniels on Feb 20, 2009 3:32 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree.

The first movie was almost perfect. The miniature work was weak, and the “Cheer Up Charlie” scene was a total popcorn…but not enough to make it less than a 10 in my book.

The remake was originally slated to star Michael Jackson. Yes, that is the worst and most inappropriate choice. I was livid when I heard that, and bitched around town to anyone who would listen.

After that, I agreed with Gene Wilder’s assumption that the remake was being done purely for cash, not for art. But Burton’s vision led to Depp which led to “the small guy” being every Oompa Loompa. Burton gets complete credit for making a piece of undeniable art instead of a cash grab. And the musical sequences overall were better in the remake and more seamlessly integrated. The remake is also a 10.

But the original touches me more. Growing up, I was that candy-starved, dirt-poor kid. The story was my fantasy, and remains so…if you add a hot tub full of top-heavy floozies and a wall of giant TVs…and maybe a righty, power-hitting LF.

Agreed, or "rec'd"

The music in the original is great. “Pure Imagination” might be my favorite song written for a movie.

Tim Burton

did Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, which was a final cut on my list. i could take or leave pretty much everything else he ever did. as for Woody, Annie Hall is enough of a masterpiece to carry every piece o’ garbage he made.

Diane ‘Queen of the Whiny Nerds" Keaton
Mia ’I’m so Precious’ Farrow
Mariel ‘Brain Dead’ Hemingway
Soon-Yi ’ Barely Legal’ Previn.

If there ever was a phonier, lazier less creative entertainer/director it could only be Jerry Seinfeld.

what about drew barrymore, julia roberts, christina ricci, evan rachel wood, amanda peet, tea, leoni, debra messing, demi moore, mira sorvino, mary louise parker, and the countless other star actresses he has used in his films?

Woody’s movies pay nothing, yet all the big names want to work with him.

I still feel that Allen’s work, which has been defined by movies like Manhatten and Annie Hall are for the most part gared C to B fodder.

Last of the Mohicans!

I WILL FIND YOU!

Man, I totally forgot to add this movie to mine, I love it. Wes Studi is one of the most underrated actors and I really thank Tony Hillerman for giving him a good job later on in his life. And its also fun just to watch DDL kick ass. I like him staring at the Englishman and saying “I think you and I will come to a major disagreement.” in pure thug fashion.

By the way, did you like the quote in the Volquez article on mlb.com? Something like “Don’t worry, it’s the Dominican, everyone has guns.”

Typical Dusty speak
Everybody remembers the 85-90 pitch Maddux

Maddux only pitched 6 games in his CAREER with 90 or fewer pitches. And that’s out of 744 games pitched.

I wish I had pitch count info to refute the 150 pitch quote, as well.

by PeteyHendrix on Feb 20, 2009 7:28 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Actually, if you look at that article

He’s only pitched 6 complete games in his career with 90 or fewer pitches. He has a lot more than that overall.

However, you’re dead on about the 150 pitch quote. While Dusty is right about seeing Maddux throw 150 pitches in his career… he’s only done it once. Dusty must have picked the right night to watch a Cubs game…

"I like to think more in terms of him his in-scoring position percentage." - Dusty Baker (2009) regarding Corey Patterson's relationship with his daughter

by BK on Feb 20, 2009 7:48 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

You're right...except...

If a pitcher is relieved prior to the end of a game without throwing 90 pitches, it may well be for reasons other than pitch efficiency. The guy pitched 109 complete games in his career, and SIX were in the pitch range Dusty spouts about. And who would remember Maddux as a guy who did a great job of pitching 7 innings with a pitch count lower than 120? That’s not what Greg is remembered for. He’s remembered for being incredibly effective and winning a lot.

Dusty really alienates us brainiacs when he insults our intelligence with baseless BS. I hate him.

i see

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Neverending_Story

so, i guess it was a german novel, then wolfgang petersen turned it into his first big hollywood film. i guess that makes some sense, although it’s strange that a german director made a german novel into an american film.

“The Year That Trembled.” After hearing of his suicide, we Hiram students nodded knowingly. “Yup,” we said, and looked around us. “That’ll happen.”
