Hope Springs Eternal

Via Hall O' Famer Hal:

...(Willy) Taveras believes he should get 700 plate appearances this year. He also believes he can hit .300 and raise his on-base average to .350.

“Do all that and, yes, I can see steal 100 bases,” he said.

If Willy Taveras can OBP .350 and steal 100 bases, plus play a solid defensive centerfield, he will likely be one of the best free-agent signings of the winter.  I've bad-mouthed the signing a good deal since it happened, but reading this article really has me believing that it just might actually happen.  I dont know.  Call me crazy.  The dude is lightning fast, and while he should probably be laughed out of the room for suggesting that it is possible for him (the last person to steal 100+ bases was Vince Coleman, and he  did it from 1985-87) I still cant help thinking that he and Dusty are just meant for each other.  I got the fever and I got it bad.

Here's another interesting little bit I wasnt aware of; apparently EdE is one of 16 children.  Dusty says he's so soft-spoken because he was probably never heard as a child.  Just one more reason to root for the guy in my book.

your definitely crazy : )

I’ll put the over/under at 55 steals. And I’d take the under.

i don't know what he'll do

but I’d like to place a rather substantial wager with mr taveras over these numbers

Made from 100% recycled awesome,

i dont actually think he can swipe 100

but i dont see the harm in hoping he can take 65 and OBP around .350. i could be happy with that.

My millions are unconventional!

agreed

A .350 OBP would be a terrific thing for the offense. I think he’ll be more in the .330 range.

Im bullish on Dickerson, however. Im interested in seeing what he can do this season.

Never mind, he said plate appearances

I’m a dumbass. Oh well, count me as part of the camp that right now is willing to believe that Taveras’s numbers will be more in line with 2007 than 2008. If you can’t have hope now, then when?

does anyone believe there will ever be 100 steals in a season again?

i guess i’m not one to say never, but i honestly don’t think a guy like willy t is going to do it (even if he has a .350 OBP). i don’t think there’s a guy in baseball right now who can do it.

I think Jose Reyes could do it

but I don’t think he will. I think teams realize the value of the SB is down in a power-hitting era. I could see someday a player in San Diego stealing 100. Eventually they will take a chance at recreating the 1985 Cardinals team in that large park.

We’’re in process of trying to a guy with a trade record of working with pitches

yeah, agreed about reyes

he’ll never get the chance to do it with that large payroll that can afford to buy guys to hit it out of the park. do we know the dimensions of Shitty Field?

by Daedalus on Feb 16, 2009 2:44 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

The stadium itself is supposed to be huge

I keep hearing about how it dwarfs Shea. No idea about field dimensions though.

Possible

But so many things have to be right. A healthy player in a bad NL lineup playing in pitcher’s park for a non-sabry team. I’d love to see it happen, though.

I like Scrabbles scrappy assesment of what could be one of the worst Red's teams in a long time.

It takes guts to buck the ‘trend’ – I’m with you all the way (at least thru Spring Training).

those are MVP numbers

if only he could manage a dinger or two. i am an optimist when it comes to the reds — about the only thing i am consistently optimistic about. that being said, it will be interesting to see who lets me down this year.
