I think justin is almost dead on
except for:
1. Spelling
2. Masset instead of Josh Roenicke due to Masset being out of options.

forgot about bray
i should have had the 40 man up when i did this. But the bullpen is overcrowded with Weathers, LIncoln, and Rhodes, really one of those three might not have been a bad idea, but all three is a bit much, especially with the young talents of Roinecke, Ramram, Fisher, and Maloney waiting in the wings. Fucking Joccety.

We might well see several veteran arms traded at the deadline.
With prospects coming back and second-half opportunities for the prospects. In a rebuilding year, that could end up being quite shrewd, if not completely intentional.
I don’t think they expected Weathers to return.

I posted this in BK's "Who Are We Watching" thread last week.
Gomes hit 21 homers in 101 games and finished third in the 2005 AL Rookie of the Year balloting.
The next season he hit well. For a month. Since May 8 2007, Gomes has given the world:
268 games
777 ABs
247 strikeouts
84 walks
.208 BA
Here’s what he’s done as a substitute throughout his career: .167/.258/.315
Here’s what he’s done against relievers throughout his career: .204/.312/.374
But he has hit lefties well throughout his career (with the exception of last season… does anyone know if he was injured?) so Dusty’ll love having him off the bench to face Neal Cotts in the seventh.
I don’t think we want Gomes to make the 25-man roster, let alone go to the plate three or four or five times every day.

Perhaps.
At this point in Spring Training I’d rather hold out hope that Alonso blows up and forces Dusty to move Votto to left. This season. (I do believe in fairies. I do! I do!)
Once that faint possibility fades away, I suppose you might get me on the Gomes-platooning-in-left bandwagon with a hearty “meh.”

What players have come to the Reds as a "change of scenery
Plenty
There are only two seasons - winter and Baseball. - Bill Veeck
by PeteyHendrix on Feb 16, 2009 12:25 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I took a look to see how valid this perception might be...
Who has come here as a change of scenery candidate who flopped? Who has been more successful with other teams? While lots of players come and go and have ups and downs, here are some recent examples that I think fall into the “change of scenery” group:
Improvements once a Red:
Brandon Phillips
Edinson Volquez
Josh Hamilton
Jerry Hairston, Jr.
Jose Guillen
Pete Schourek
Todd Jones
Ruben Rivera
Danny Jackson
Mark Wohlers
Pete Harnisch
Jorge Cantu
Declines/still crappy once a Red:
Ken Griffey, Jr.
Corey Patterson
Eric Milton
Ramon Ortiz
Ben Weber
Jung Bong
Kevin Wickander
Improved after leaving:
Todd Coffey
Josh Hancock
Brady Clark
Declines/no improvement after leaving:
Felipe Lopez
Danny Graves
Jason LaRue
Austin Kearns
Wily Mo Pena
D’Angelo Jimenez
Ryan Wagner
John Franco
Jose Acevedo
Ken Griffey, Jr.
Ruben Rivera
Mark Wohlers
This is terribly subjective in both what names are listed and how they fared, but I don’t think I am far off here. Again, I am listing only those whom I think the title “change of scenery candidate” applies" I think if “change of scenery” is a valid concept (and why wouldn’t it be?), then I think we’ve gotten better than we’ve given.
What do the rest of you think?
There are only two seasons - winter and Baseball. - Bill Veeck
by PeteyHendrix on Feb 16, 2009 1:19 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Nice list
My biggest issue is we should take the aging curve into account. I think of Dante Bichette as a failure, but looking back he was 36 and put up the same OPS+ he had in Coors field. We talked about this before, but I don’t think Danny Jackson belongs on the improved-as-a-Red list.
improved after leaving
Paul O’Neil
Trevor Hoffman
Frank something or other
And we should claim Joe Morgan for our Midas touch list. Bret Boone can be on both sides. He improved after coming over to the Reds, then suspiciously improved much later.
Does Griffey really belong as a “change of scenery” guy considering he came over at the height of his powers?
by Red Menace on Feb 16, 2009 1:55 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I think my distinction here is...
that I only included folks whom I thought “needed a change of scenery,” be it from attitude, interpersonal conflicts, a clean slate away from past expectations/soured fans, or a new start after a craptastic year. Many on this list were described in newspaper accounts of the day as needing a change of scenery.
I don’t know that Danny Jackson needed a change of scenery, but I suspect he did. He lost 18 games for the Royals the year before he joined the Reds, then won 23 while improving his game in almost every way. I can’t think that any fan base would be verbally supportive of a pitcher with 18 losses. I imagine that shedding some of that KC failure baggage did him a lot of good.
Paul O’Neill was happy as a Red, and was not traded as part of a COS (change of scenery), in my mind, even though he clearly benefited from the change. Here, COS was not the purpose of the trade, or even a component of it, but rather a re-structuring of talent from each GM’s perspective.
Trevor Hoffman was drafted as part of an expansion draft because he arguably showed less talent than 27 (or so) other Reds at the time. COS does not apply as a cause or impetus.
Frank Robinson might have needed a change of scenery, as did Milt Pappas. However, both were successful before and after the trade, so I didn’t include them.
I left out Dante Bichette for the same reason you describe – and as a FA, I am not sure he needed a change of scenery so much as a steady paycheck and playing time.
I don’t think Bret Boone nor Joe Morgan needed a COS. Both hit well the seasons before they came to the Reds.
I listed Griffey here twice. Coming here was a change of scenery that he demanded amidst death threats in Seattle following his voiced displeasure at the direction of the franchise. That’s clearly a COS situation. Leaving for the ChiSox, some suspected, might be the change of scenery he needed to jumpstart his season…perhaps the pennant chase was just what he needed…it just didn’t work out.

by Cy Schourek on Feb 16, 2009 12:29 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I thought of that example.
But I dismissed it as a poor one. Everyone knows Harang was mis-used last year, and injured. Jackson was 37-49 for KC before he became a Red. Harang had won 16 games each of the previous two seasons before the ’08 debacle, and was a CY Young consideration both years. He started 2008 with an ERA of 3.50 before that fateful, ill-advised relief appearance. And in his final 8 starts after finding his post-DL legs resulted in an ERA of 4.30, which was 0.21 below leage average for the year.
With that, I don’t feel it’s a reasonable comparison, and so I dismissed it.
There are only two seasons - winter and Baseball. - Bill Veeck
by PeteyHendrix on Feb 16, 2009 2:30 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
great, now I have to argue with you...
Jackson had an ERA that was 14% better than the league average when he went 9-18. His two seasons before that were even better. All this while being just 25 years old in his last season with the Royals.
If he needed a change of scenery, it was to get off of the lowest scoring team in the American League. Go back and look at that 1987 Royals pitching staff. Every starter had an ERA+ of at least 114 and they had two 18-game losers. Jackson got just 3.5 runs per game in support and his offense scored over 3 runs in just 14 of his 34 starts. In 1988 with the Reds, he got 4.75 R/G in support and the Reds scored under 4 runs in 15 of 35 starts.
Jackson pitched slightly better in 1988 than 1987 (the only real improvement was his walks which he cut nearly in half). But he benefited more from playing on a better team than anything.
We’’re in process of trying to a guy with a trade record of working with pitches

Danny Jackson was legit before he was acquired by the Reds. That was a huge, huge move in its day.

It will be interesting to see if he adjusted his swing or pitch recognition at all over the offseason and in spring training. A full season of at-bats for him, and he’ll be challenging Adam Dunn when it comes to strikeouts. I shudder to think what will happen when the fans turn on him for the K’s.

This being said, I think Dusty and others are actively trying to keep Dickerson off the starting line-up, and they just think last year was the biggest fluke of all time…and Willy T will start, but I dont want him to, if you only got him for his SB just put his ass on the bench and make him the most used pinch runner to ever exist. But once again this is the line-up I WANT to see. Id also like to see Alonso or Francisco have a stellar ST and make the line-up, because it would take a fluke break out like this for us to have a good season.
