Heroes of the Zeros: Center Field

In February of 2000 the Reds traded for Ken Griffey Jr. and locked up their center fielder for the next decade to an 8-year deal.  Or so they thought.  Injuries and declining play meant that Griffey only started 36% of the games in CF for the decade.  Does he still deserve to be the starting CF on the All Decade Team?  That's for you to decide!  Ballot after the jump.

Other ballots: Starting Rotation | Bullpen | Catcher | First base | Second base | Third base | Shortstop | Left Field

catch of the decade for the Reds?

Gotta go with Griffey and always wonder if only…

If we were doing plays of the decade, this catch

and the one Freel made at 3B in Chicago have to be up there.

But had Hamilton been around for awhile...

Corey

The man who replaced the Mendoza line with the Patterson Standard … I look at this list and wonder why the Reds continue to say “we need a center fielder.” Obviously, there aren’t any to be had. Griffey played it well, though.

all about the expectations

Jr. gave us almost 6 full seasons of 122 OPS+, with passable defense for most of it. If you could guarantee me I’d get that out of Stubbs over the next 8 years, I’d take it.

Trouble is, we were expecting 10 full seasons of 150 OPS+.

The problem was Griffey's defense wasn't passable

The last few years at Center it was atrocious, maybe the worst in the league. Half of his WAR came in his first year. But after all the injuries after 2000 his legs were shot. The move to RF was at least three years too late.

He still wins this beauty contest by having the most playing time and a pretty good bat.

I'm going with Griffey due to playing time and that one great season

But it was very close between he and Freel for me. In terms of WAR per player season, the’re more or less equals (Freel actually leads, though by the slimmest of margins). As ken said, fielding matters.

I just wish it could've been Hamilton

but yeah, I feel the least we owe Griffey, after all of the mockery of him, is our CF of the decade. He was damned good. Just not damned good enough.

Ah, Norris Hopper

Responsible for knocking out Ryan Freel and then putting the ball back in his glove. Legendary.

Wow

Three CF in the decade with an OPS+ over 100? And one of them was Juan Encarnacion? Ugh.

Hell, Corey Patterson could get there in 4 seconds

The problem is, the throw from the second baseman would get there in 3.5 seconds.
