Heroes of the Zeros: Shortstop

All of you people who have been saying, "Wow, this has to be the worst position ever," here's the list you've been waiting for.  It's kind of funny that coming into the aughts, the Reds were riding basically 48 straight seasons with 4 starting SS, all of pretty good quality.  Since then, well, not so much.  Good luck finding a worthy starter in this list.  I really have no idea who is going to win this one. Voting is after the jump.

Other ballots: Starting Rotation | Bullpen | Catcher | First base | Second base | Third base

he really shouldn't be though

2003 and 2004 weren’t exactly big years for him. The shortstop position has been a black hole, I miss having Lopez and EdE on that side of the field, they were an awesome combo.

2004 wasn't exactly a bad year for him

He really took off the first half of the season, made the all-star team, and faded because of the injuries. i think he should have been offered a contract for 2005. granted, he probably wouldn’t have played more than 100 games.

is travis dawkins really gookie?

royce clayton is probably my least favorite red of all time.

maybe if you’re pondering another series for the offseason, most hated, bottom 100, or zeroes of the zeroes would be fun.

i miss royce

so does Courtney, im sure.

it was the end of his playing days ...

yet Larkin’s average was still higher than the normal regulars

That list

is absolutely disgusting. In hindsight, we should have signed Larkin to a contract for another couple years. Every one of those other guys had MAJOR flaws and never should have been a starting SS on any team.

by kcgard2 on Dec 22, 2009 10:11 AM EST reply actions

Honestly, I don't think I would have guessed that Juan Castro played the most games at SS for us

(Yet he still had fewer PA than guys that played 100 and 200 fewer games than he did). I’m really tempted to pick him just because he was here for the whole decade, but DAMN those numbers are putrid.

Sigh, Larkin I guess, though I never really think of him with the 2000s Reds.

by Brendanukkah on Dec 22, 2009 11:04 AM EST reply actions

I doubt Castro played the most games at SS

He also played a bunch at 2B and 3B, but SS was his most frequent position. Those numbers above are for all of his time with the Reds.

i went with Manos d'Oro for just that reason

he’s kinda like the poster child for the Reds this decade. i suppose i could have waited and voted him the utility man, but i already clicked the thing.

funny thing

Willy Taveras actually had a positive WAR last season, according to Smith’s data.

It's gotta be Larkin

He played the most games there, has the highest WAR, highest OBP, and is Barry Friggin Larkin.

Yeah, but...

Wilton Guerrero is Vladmir Guerrero’s brother. I don’t know why people were so down on him,.. he’s Vladmir’s brother! The Reds pointed that out at the time…

Even old, broke down Larkin was better than young whatever else we had on hand.

then again, Larkin was no Vladmir Guerrero’s brother, so he’s got that against him.

Castro's WAR

I’m sure you’ve answered this before, but is this from Fangraphs or some other source? From Fangraphs, which leaves out 2000-2001 because of the lack of UZR back then, he looks about 0.

this is from BaseballProjection.com (Sean Smith)

Total Zone is much harder on his defense – starting to be a running theme – and Smith doesn’t like his offense as much either.

Wow

The rotting husk of Barry Larkin, who pissed off every single person on his way out of town because he thought he was the Reds’ best option at SS, really was.
