I dunno about this given his age/injury history

Do we really want a 37 year old 3B?

That was my first thought

But the dollars are fairly reasonable. He should be able to earn his keep.

This must mean END is officially done at third.

by ken on Dec 19, 2009 2:13 PM EST up reply actions

I don't know about END

This was his first option year I believe. That means he can still be in the minors in 2010 and 2011. Given his plate approach he could probably use all of that time refining things and still be in the majors by the time he is 24.

by dougdirt on Dec 19, 2009 2:21 PM EST up reply actions

One more year, or a part thereof seems reasonalbe for the kid

I don't know

He had to learn to play defense regardless of whether he stays at 3B or moves elsewhere along with drastically improving his walk rate or drastically cutting down his strikeout rate.

Agreed - I'm saying another year at the minor league level is a good thing

not necessarily that he’ll stay there all season. I prefer Frazier as the back up 3rd baseman and the starting LF unless Gomes is signed. Its only a couple/three months ’til ST.

I like this

Just twice in the last 8 seasons has Rolen not been productive enough to be worth double the base salaries and the signing bonus isn’t much more on top of that. He just needs to be worth 2 WAR a season and this deal is a win for the Reds. I think he’s a pretty good bet for that, even if he’s not playing 150 games.

Seriously though, why is it a signing bonus?

Re:Signing Bonus

Likely so the MLBPA wouldn’t argue that he took such a discount from his previous contract. This just seems like a way to defer what he already had coming without setting a trend. Remember that the MLBPA stepped in when Arod was taking a discount to go to Beantown.

the more i think about it

the more i like this deal. unless he completely breaks, he’ll easily be worth the money. im not as concerned about how it effects the prospects, as ive never really been a fan of END anyway and Frazier can play at least 2 other positions. i would LOVE to see the savings net Tejada on a 1-year deal. it’s been said that if he wants a deal he’ll have to move to 3B, so maybe the Reds could get him to come for 4-5 mil with the promise of a SS gig.

if this indeed leads to a good SS move (and at this point, i think only Tejada counts) then this is the kind of deal i could really love. but even if the savings are sunk, i still like it. nothing can change the past and magically make the trade a good deal, but this is at least a good salve for the wound.

I keep thinking how stupid it would be if they lost rolen in a year after giving up stewart/roenicke for him. I figured we see him extended, just didnt think it would be this soon. gives them some wiggle room for this year, and the bonus is basically what we knock off this yr’s salary spread out over three years, so even though it’s 8.1 mil a year its still not bad.

by sharks on Dec 19, 2009 4:44 PM EST reply actions

I think you just answered the signing bonus question

If they had simply paid him 8 mil a year there might have been a problem with the union or something about taking a bunch of money away from him this year, but technically, with the signing bonus, he’s still making 11 mil this year, just some of it is deferred.

I'm not seeing any savings...

Sure, this shifts some of the costs, but that $5 million for next year just got spread over three years. No savings there. It’s just a two year/$13 million extension plus some creative accounting.

Let me write out a formal proof for you.

by Gray on Dec 19, 2009 5:11 PM EST reply actions

I was kinda pissed at first, but the deal makes sense.

You figure age won’t negatively affect his defensive value at 3B much, and even if his power continues to sag he’ll still probably be able to get on base, which this team definitely needs, so he’s likely to be worth the money.

Doug’s point about END’s age is a good one, especially given the fast track he was seemingly put on by the Reds. This gives me a bit more confidence that they see him for what he is right now, and I don’t think anyone on the Reds thinks of Frazier as a 3B primarily anymore, considering he hasn’t played there in ages.

Now let’s see what Walt does with the money

this is the primary reason i hate the trade so much

if Rolen really wanted out of Toronto and particularly in Cincy, then why did we have to give up so much? the Blue Jays had their hands tied!

if there was an agreement in place beforehand, then why not make it known? why all the hand-wringing about the budget the past few months?

if we really gave up that much. The Reds needed to get rid of EE if they were getting Rolen, and the Jays apparently didn’t really want him. They took him to get the deal done.

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

by BubbaFan on Dec 19, 2009 7:17 PM EST up reply actions

that's a problem (in my opinion) with the teams not valuing EdE properly

he was (and probably still is) a decent 1.5-2 WAR player. that’s not great shakes, but it means he wasnt overpaid. the Reds were desperate to get rid of him, but i dont think they should have been so. at least, not desperate enough to kick in Stewart to get the deal done. conversely, i would have forced the Jays to take him so they could unload Rolen. Rolen didnt want to be there and the Jays wanted to clear his salary. the Reds should have had all the leverage in the negotiations, but from the outcome you’d think it was the other way around.

As long as he's healthy

I guess i don’t mind this. I was stumped as to why we got him to begin with, given our payroll limits and the direction I thought we were going. But since we have him now,
shifting some pay around and getting a decently affordable extension is smart, I guess, and if he plays most of those extended years without a huge decline, we’ve got an OK deal. But given his injury history, it’s hard not to be a little leery… How many games do you guess we can actually expect him to play through the end of this contract?

watching it

Interesting that they were talking about Rose having a chance at breaking Ty Cobb’s record – 15 years before he actually broke Cobb’s record.

Also, love the Reds uniforms from that season. I’d like to see them go back to that. I think these are them:

they didn't go double-knit until '72

I agree, those uniforms there are the best the Reds ever had…the current ones are a decent update of them, but the HUGE SANS SERIF NAMES are a personal favorite (and one that no company ever does right when making retros).

Playing around on this database is a lot of fun, but they’re a little shoddy on some stuff in the 21st century. I’ve also spent too much time at this website, and my parents got me this book when I was like, 6. And I memorized the whole thing. I was a weird child.

Makes me want to buy a blue Reds hat

I noticed that that site doesn’t show alternates. Was there an alternate in the earlier years?

nah

no merch sales, and there wasn’t enough money to have new jerseys all the time. I don’t think alts really picked up till the 90s, but I suppose someone who wants to do research can tell me I’m wrong.

You know that road greys are traditional because teams wouldn’t want to do laundry on the road, so they just bought fabric that would hide stains better? Ah, the good ol’ days…

Yeah, decent uni's.

As long as the shirts stay this level of bagginess (no more, no less), and they all show at least this much stirrup.

Give me a lineup of 9 Ryan Freels, and I'll show you a team that can't pitch.

Those are fantastic. And I agree with Cy, those are beautiful names.

I hope to construct a music video montage of classy St. Louis Cardinal moments, perhaps setting it to Mariah Carey's "Hero."

Please take a moment to find the classiest incidents in recent Cardinal history, and link to an article covering the event, or video or pictures if you can find them. And if you just have a ridiculous photo of a recent Cardinal, please post a link here to the highest resolution image you can find.

I think we can all learn from such a classy organization. Let's give it a try.
