Wanna tag along? Can we meet the FMM?

Ahhh...if only I'd seen this sooner...
Unfortunately I’ve other plans tonight…however I doubt if you’ll ever see the FMM at a bowling alley…Although she feigns amusement at my bowling addiction…her obvious sense of disdain and ridicule are not far below the surface of her enigmatic face.
I think we’d better consider putting together a RR 4 man team and entering a league…maybe Monday evenings at Walt’s in KY…you know a summer league…you, obc, me and Ash…or maybe a couple of teams or three or four…I could definately see a team with Slyde, Sidnancy,Doug and JinAZ or maybe a more sophisticated team BK, JD, Gray and Caleb…the options are tremendous and what could be more fun than hitting the lanes, drinking heavily and group self exposure?

Well for some RRs...group exposure is about as close as they get to real sex

I’m just glad they didn’t give him a minor league deal. I’m not sure where he goes though if he makes it past spring training. He shouldn’t get a spot over Heisey – especially if Taveras is still around.

Why?
minor league doesn’t mean anything to the Reds. He’ll make the 25 man roster by opening day and Heisey and Frazier will be back in the minors.
by Brian B on Dec 18, 2009 7:06 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
they should be unless they outplay him in ST
i think that’s what you meant.
If Heisey and Frazier are going to be good I would prefer they stay in Louisville until after May so they are not Super 2 eligible. That is unless they are absolutely on fire in Spring Training, a la Cueto 2 years ago.

If a player starts the season with the team
they are not at risk for super 2, unless you think they will get sent down again.

one of us is misunderstanding this rule and I think it's you
Here’s the definition.
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/05/super-twos.html
If I read that correctly I think it means if Cueto plays the entire next season then he may be arbitration eligible next year because he may qualify as a super two.
The only thing being sent down would do would be stop the service time clock, a la JJ Hardy.
by Dave from Louisville on Dec 18, 2009 11:13 PM EST up reply actions
No, it's you
If Cueto plays the entire season next year, he will be arbitration eligible because he’ll have 3 full years of service time. You only have to worry about super 2 status for players who are between 2 and 3 years of service time. If a player is called up at the start of the season and never sent back down again, they will have 3 full years of service after their 3rd year, so they won’t need to worry about being a Super 2 because they will be arbitration eligible the regular way.

I'm assuming they outplay Nix in spring. Who wouldn't?
Unless Nix has an Andy Abad-type spring and Dusty is fooled. Either way, we know what we get with Nix. And yet, the Reds will give up on the higher ceiling.
Their play will determine if they are ready or not
It’s not like they do not want them to play in the bigs, its that most of them haven’t even proven themselves at AAA let alone the MLB.
by Dave from Louisville on Dec 18, 2009 11:15 PM EST up reply actions
It should be taken into account
But I think they should all start at AAA and force themselves onto the 25man. Make Walt put them on it like Cueto did.

ST stats mean nearly nothing, and should probably mean less than they do.

But the scouts/coaches seeing them play might mean something.

You have to reward results you commie bastard
I agree with you that when you have an “all-world” talent like Bruce he needs to take some lumps. But Heisey and Frazier are not even Top 50 MLB prospects. I too only wish Dusty gave young guys the PAs that he’s giving C Pat and Willy T………but he did that because of the $ they made. Nix makes the same amount of cash, so play HAS TO determine who wins the job.
FA AAAA players look at getting a fair shot to compete for a job when they sign some place. Any high upside AAAA FA is not going to go to a team that prefers communism to performance based decisions.

I'm perfectly fine with this
Hopefully, he’ll just end up providing decent depth down in Louisville.
My fantasy football team this year? Lippincott's Shorts
i have a feeling he's going to make the team.
only because i don’t want him to, which is exactly why he will.
I don't know
This year and last year are very different. This year Stubbs, Wlad, and even Heisey are serious players where as none of them were last year. I think cesar is right, he’s probably just going to act as injury insurance in AAA.
Of course, there’s also the real possibility that he hits .320 in ST, C-Dick hits .220, and Nix makes the team over him.
If I hear the word 'perky' again, I'll puke

he really didn't have a bad year last year, did he?
i thought for sure there’d be a team that wanted him.
He had that great start, where he was hitting a double every other PA
But by the end of the season his average was under 250 and his obp under 300. Even for a bench OF that’s not acceptable.
eh
he slugged over .470. you could do worse for a lefty pinch-hitter.
‘course, we know on this team he’d start 5 days a week. that’s Dusty’s definition of a pinch-hitter.

I love Nix as an 11th outfielder.
Unfortunately, Dustbrain will see him as a 3rd outfielder, behind Willy T and Bruce, but ahead of Stubbs, C-Dick, Heisey, END, Bladdy, Frazier, Yonder, and – now that I think about it – Owings, whom I believe can best Nix at the dish.
No BP to SS?
No trying Owings in LF?
No vigorous throwing program for pitchers?
No 4-man rotation, even if the starters prefer it?
SS must bat 2nd?
No consecutive lefties in the batting order?
Is this the LEAST imaginative player personnel handling we’ve ever had?
Give me a lineup of 9 Ryan Freels, and I'll show you a team that can't pitch.
Oh come on Petey
Compared to signing Wily, having Doofus McHandjob in the MLB starting lineup, hell lets go back to LLM and Co-Pat…Laynce is a perfectly good #4 outfielder who can play all 3 positions well, PH from the left side with power and has a fair amount of MLB experience. I don’t think he’ll necessarily be in Frazier’s way..but I ’m just not that high on Hi-Z and what happens if Stumps comes back down to earth…
Last year Gomes went down to LV and after he came up he was a good contributor…there is nothing that says that Nix willl make this team out of ST. I, really hope he does…but not as the starting or even platooning left fielder (unless he’s on fire in April). I am in the minority but for a part time player I like what he brings to the team mrore than C-Dick and I love Dickerson.
I do not see Balentine ever being a starting OF and the idea of Chris and Wlad in LF as a platoon doesn’t get it for me. I’d rather see Frazier or END get a shot with Nix and C-Dick as the back ups. You’d have Owings as a RH power bat off the bench and possibly END there too.
Good move by the Reds…nothing to lose everything to gain.
here’s quote from BK last season…“Although Laynce Nix was 0-for-4, he showed that he’s probably the best defensive LF on the team.” (from ‘SMAWL BAWL! and HAVOC! pave the way for another Reds win, 6-4 over St. Pujols’)

I actually like the signing, but I'm scared/scarred about how he'll be used.
Mads, don’t misunderstand me. On most teams, Nix is a fine 4th of 5th outfielder. I think that might have been the case during his tenure with the 2009 Reds.
For the 2010 Reds, tho…he’d be my 11th choice in the OF, once you add player development into the mix. I don’t think we’re far apart on that. I ain’t very high on Frazier, either, so maybe he’s 10th.
Nix is perfectly adequate, and might well win us a couple of games, just like he did in 2009. I have no problem with this signing. But with Dustbrain at the helm, I fear that mediocre talent (like Nix, sadly) will start games at the expense of comparable players who could use the playing time and have much higher ceilings at lower price tags.

Why are you not high on Frazier?
Is it his high OBP, his good contact skills, his above average power, or his defensive versatility?
If I hear the word 'perky' again, I'll puke
I like his bat as an infielder.
However, the only infield position he apparently can handle defensively is 3B, where we have a logjam already.
RW: The Reds like his bat, but Frazier doesn’t have a set position. “He’s rough,” Triple-A manager Rick Sweet said. “I think that’s the best word…He’s rough…I think the biggest thing is he can hit. What we’re trying to do is figure out where he’ll fit best. I don’t think he’s a utility guy. He’s young enough that we’re going to have to sit down and make the decision. He’s good enough that he could play if that’s what we decide to do.”
So he can play a number of positions poorly…ugh. So can Rosie.
Good contact skills? Last year he struck out in 24.5% of his AB’s. Isn’t that actually average?
If he hits better .830 OPS in MLB and shows he can play in LF, I’d be excited. But in 87 minor league games in LF, he has a .981 F% and a tiny 1.83 range factor.
He’s never successfully sacrificed at any level in over 300 games, and Dusty LOVES to bunt.
He’s a poor base stealer, and has grounded into 11 DPs each of the last 2 years.
I don’t hate the guy, I’m just not impressed YET.
Give me a lineup of 9 Ryan Freels, and I'll show you a team that can't pitch.
by PeteyHendrix on Dec 20, 2009 7:42 PM EST up reply actions
A couple of things
His strikeout rate was not that high. He struck out in 13.8% of his PA, which is what you should compare to, and 15.4% of his AB.
Range factor is a fairly weak stat if you don’t know the league/team averages because it can fluctuate based on flyball pitchers vs. groundball, etc. I wouldn’t call 1.83 tiny though for LF since the NL average for LF last season was 1.93. LF just naturally get fewer balls to field, which is all RF really tells us. FWIW, his Total Zone in LF has been +5 runs (SSS). In fact, he’s rated pretty well everywhere he has played defensively according to TZ (click the defense link in the upper right-hand corner). But, as I said in the other thread, he hasn’t played anywhere enough for the data to be reliable.

Nix brings
a 35-50 point lower BA, an 80-100 point lower OBP and inferior defense as compared to Dickerson. How does this equate to “bringing more to the team” even as a PT player than C-Dick does?
Nix is a somewhat below average OF with little upside; you’ll get an occasional 2B or HR, but you’ll also get a .235-.240 BA and a below .300 OBP. They should have left well enough alone; I heard not even the Pirates wanted Nix.
I'm not overly thrilled with him either
but it’s a little depth for a cheap deal, so I guess I can live with it. he’s at least a guy who can spot start and give you some power as a PH, not that useful but useful none the less.
One thing to remember too
while the 40-man roster is full right now, it’s technically at 39 or 38 when the season starts because Volquez and possibly Lincoln will be put on the 60-day DL. So, while this is a minor league deal, it maybe such in name only. He may have been told that opening roster spot is his.
