There is an overriding misconception that Clutch is an overriding misconception.
I've been following this most of the night
The guys over at CJ have been following this hard. If I hear anything, I’ll try to update it.
"If it wasn't this, it'd be something else."
There were some reports that Henry had died but that at this time is false.

Some idiot on Twitter was posing as a Dallas News reporter
and sending that out.

Josh (and company) over there have been going a great job of keeping the breaking news in one thread, and debunking the ridiculous reports coming out.

RIP Chris Henry
My heart goes out to his family and friends. He died much too young.

I read that him and his fiancee had just purchased wedding rings earlier that day
It’s just a bit too close to home for myself. My girl makes me crazy sometimes too…
RIP Chris Henry. Cincinnati couldn’t forget you anytime soon.

Below is a Vin Scully transcript after Nick Adenhart's death
I think it works here too:
And if there is one thing I’ve learned in all my years — and I haven’t learned much — but the one thing I’ve learned: Don’t even waste your time trying to figure out life.
Ground ball through for Andre Ethier, and life continues for those who still have it. And with a leadoff single, Russell Martin will be coming up.
But I would say, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to take a moment and say a prayer in memory for Nick, especially for his parents. What a shock to lose a twenty-two-year-old.
Eighty-five percent of the f*ckin' world is working. The other fifteen percent come out here. A f*ckin' playground for the cocks*ckers.

Nick Adenhart was a shock
But I’m not exactly shocked that Chris Henry ended this way. What a sad waste.

When I heard that Chris Henry had died this morning..I was more than saddened
How is it that such a talented, if troubled, young man’s life should end so randomly…
There is an overriding misconception that Clutch is an overriding misconception.
It is a terrible loss
It all sounds like he was just a passionate young man whose passion sometimes made him appear volatile and got him into trouble. The 911 call from the car behind the truck was scary. She described a shirtless man in the back of a pickup beating on the cab window . . . it’s really making me wonder what made him so crazy as to chase after the truck, jump into the back, and then NOT wait for the truck to stop before doing whatever it was he neede to do. Could she just have been running away from a heated argument and he didn’t want to let it end? I hope that’s all it was, because we’ve all been there. Let’s hope there was no serious foul play involved and he can rest in peace.

ugh
Well, I’ve never been there.
I know feelings can run high, but there’s no excuse for that kind of behavior.
And yes, it goes both ways. Scratching your husband’s face and bashing in his rear window with a golf club is way out of line, too, even if he’s a cheating scuzzbucket.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Whats this suicide non-sense
Apparently someone from the fiancee’s family mentioned that Chris threatened to jump out of the back of the truck if his soon to be wife didn’t stop the vehicle. This would take some heat off of the Fiancee for sure, but is it factual? This report could be the difference between her serving time for homicide, or her living off the money her kids inherit.
How hard would it be to throw a man with one good arm out of the back of a truck? Something else thats been brought to my attention is that Chris was supposedly banging on the rear cabin window while the vehicle was moving. It’s impossible to say for sure which arm he was banging with, but a moron could see how he was at a disadvantage.
Cincinnati, I know you’re bitter. But who else detects a little foul play here?

Are there witnesses?
Someone who was driving on the same road? There could be foul play but nothing can be established if the only first-hand account is from the fiancee.
there were witnesses
Including a car driving behind them. The driver of that car called 911:
One came from a woman driving behind the truck.
“I’m driving behind a yellow F-150, there’s a black man on it with no shirt, he’s got his arm in a cast,” the woman said. “He’s beating on the truck … I don’t know if he’s trying to break in it or something crazy.”

she didn't witness him falling out
she saw them turn down a road and didn’t follow him.

but
If he was banging on the cab looking like he was trying to break in, that probably means he wasn’t just sitting in back minding his own business, when his fiancee pitched him out.
I don’t know if he threw himself out, as he threatened to do. If you look at the photos of the scene, there seems to be a pretty sharp curve there, so he could have fallen out, rather than jumped. But the fact that he was hanging onto the roof, banging on it, is not an accident.

Look, we don't know what happened
She is clearly partially responsible for his fate, but we will probably never know exactly to what degree. Obviously neither of them were engaging in critical thinking at the moment. I don’t think there’s any need yet to go Nancy Grace on her.
IAN! I'm on traain!
there's no need to go Nancy Grace on anyone, really.

It wasn't just the fiancee's family
There was a witness.
This guy has been in so much trouble with the law…is it really a surprise his life ended this way? It’s not an “accident,” as they keep calling it, nor was it random. He did it to himself. Blaming his fiancee is not justified by the facts, at least so far.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Henry had taken a lot of steps to turn his life around, and was really becoming embraced again by Cincinnati fans
It would be a lot different if it had been, say, Carson Palmer in the back of the truck (unless the truck was driven by Kimo von Oelhoffen – grr!), but it’s a little unfair to say that Chris had this coming. To me, it’s a little like when Sean Taylor was murdered. He had been in trouble in the past, but had turned his life around. Of course, he was the victim of a home invasion, and Chris Henry seems to be at least somewhat responsible for his situation, but in either case, I think it’s a mischaracterization to imply that their past caught up with them.

I'm not saying his past caught up with him
Nor am I saying he had this coming.
I’m saying he obviously hadn’t turned his life around, at least as much as people think. And this is not a surprise.
“Random” and an “accident” is what happened to Nick Adenhart. Throwing yourself off a moving truck while your fiancee tries to flee a “domestic situation” is something else entirely.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Maybe it's just because we're a lot closer to the situation in Cincy
But he completely had turned his life around prior to this season. Every report this season was how he cut all ties with the bad influences from his past that kept getting him into trouble, and started relying on his team and his fiancee and family to keep him on the right track.
That being said, even though he’d given up the “thug” lifestyle, he still had maturity issues. If this would have happened a few years ago, it could automatically be assumed he was up to no good in Charlotte. In this case, he was there because that’s where his fiancee’s parents were from, and they were making wedding plans. For someone who was such a positive influence on his life, I get the feeling that the “domestic dispute” that happened was an unusual situation, and not necessarily the norm. Was it immature what he did? Probably so. But to say his life is the same now as it was when he was getting in trouble is completely off-base.

maybe I'm just cynical
I do believe that people can change…but it’s very, very difficult, and even those who succeed often fall off the wagon numerous times (no pun intended).
So…I am never surprised when I hear that someone who’s been preaching about how he overcame alcohol or drug addiction died of an overdose. Or that someone who found Christ in prison and turned his life around was arrested again. Or that someone who lost 100 lbs. and swears they’ll never be fat again has gained it all back.
And I have to say…I’m a bit perturbed that people seem so accepting of behavior that seems completely beyond the pale to me.

I jumped out of the back of a pickup truck once.
The circumstances were somewhat different.
IAN! I'm on traain!
Me too
I know it will come as a complete shock, but I did it to see if I could land it. The truck was only going about 10 mph. I did not land it. It hurt like a motherfucker.

Understandable, but I don't see it as that kind of situation
Most of his past problems were with drugs and alcohol, and from the looks of this situation, those really didn’t enter the picture here at all. Maybe if he had previous problems with beating his wife or other violent crimes, we could call it a relapse, but this entire situation seemed out of the ordinary, even for someone with a checkered past like Chris.

you don't think
drugs or alcohol might have played a role in his deciding to jump on (and possibly jump off) a moving truck?
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
It might have, but that hasn't been proven.
It happened at around noon on a Wednesday. I’m not saying it’s impossible that drugs or alcohol were involved, but I don’t think it’s likely. I think it was just a situation where an immature football player let his emotions get the best of him.

I doubt he was on anything.

If it sounds like we're ready to canonize Chris Henry it's because the dude just died. That's when nice things are said.
I know you and others are skeptical about whether Henry’s “ways” finally did him in, but we don’t know what happened. They guy you’re describing ("someone who’s been preaching about how he overcame alcohol or drug addiction . . . ") doesn’t fit Chris Henry. Some people are just passionate to the point that they’re volatile. This gets young people into a lot of trouble before they grow up enough to control it. And when they do get on top of it, they are often highly successful. I think Chris was almost there.
We’re not talking about some asshole that no one liked. Everyone liked him. Even Marvin Lewis, was often disappointed in him because he knew Chris was a better person than his rap sheet showed. He just wanted him to grow up and control himself like he knew he could.
If it turns out he was into something bad and it killed him, it’s going to change things. It will still be tragic, but we will look at it differently. We do want to believe he had turned things around, but I don’t think anyone really believes he was suddenly baby Jesus. Not after Josh Hamilton’s off-season last year.
And I see what you did there lumping fat people together with criminals and drug addicts.
