Around SBN: MLB Trade Deadline: Where each team stands right now

Lest you forget, the organization's fascination with speedy centerfielders did not start when Dusty Baker got here. The brutal text:
Jim Bowden, the Reds' general manager, declined to discuss the Yankees' involvement, but an official familiar with the Wells talks said Steinbrenner called Bowden Saturday night and offered pitcher Mariano Rivera and catcher Jorge Posada.

Bowden, looking to cut his payroll, obviously decided he preferred Goodwin, a 23-year-old left-handed hitter, who in 87 games with the Orioles last season batted .263 and had 22 stolen bases in 26 attempts.

I threw up a little in my mouth as I read that.

I’m glad I was too young to really care much about rosters and trades at that point.

Guapo sums up Goodwin pretty well

in the BBTF thread (comment #5):
Buster Olney, March 24, 1996:

It didn’t take long, but the Cincinnati Reds are unhappy with center fielder Curtis Goodwin, acquired from the Orioles for left-hander David Wells. Goodwin is batting under .100, and he has shown a distinct inability to track fly balls. Goodwin opened camp as the front-runner to be the Reds’ center fielder. Now there are rumblings in the organization that Cincinnati is ready to deal him.

Cincinnati Post, May 31, 1997
CHICAGO - Reds manager Ray Knight has demanded that Curtis Goodwin begin taking extra bunting practice after his left fielder popped out on a sacrifice bunt attempt Thursday for the fourth time this season.

Goodwin’s failure to get down the sacrifice bunt in the fifth inning kept the score tied at 1-1 and opened the door for the Chicago Cubs, who got a successful sacrifice from Brian McRae in the eighth inning to set up the game-winning, run-scoring hit by Brant Brown.

‘’With the way our ballclub is, it’s imperative that our number two hitter be able to bunt the ball,‘’ Knight said.

New York Times, August 7, 1997:
CINCINNATI, Aug. 7— The Cincinnati Reds optioned outfielder Curtis Goodwin to the minor leagues today after he stormed out of the clubhouse, fuming over Manager Jack McKeon’s suggestion that he needs to change his attitude.

Goodwin, in an 0-for-29 slump, was shaking with anger and swearing when he left McKeon’s office, changed to his street clothes and left.

‘’He said he quit,’’ said his teammate Jose Rijo.

New York Times, December 11, 1997:
COLORADO ROCKIES-Acquired OF Curtis Goodwin from Cincinnati for RHP Mark Hutton.

I just assumed you wanted to forget that

it is assume Cincinnati essentially traded Wells for Hutton.

Great Slyde

Thanks. At least this convinced me to stop procrastinating with baseball and get back to grading exams. I can’t think about baseball anymore after reading this.

You're a teacher?

We have more than a few educators around here…

Let me write out a formal proof for you.

AND Mariano Rivera AND Jorge Posada.

We got 87 crap games from Goodwin and 10 crap games from Mark Hutton, who was then mercifully granted free agency, never to taste the majors again.

Vomitous.

Give me a lineup of 9 Ryan Freels, and I'll show you a team that can't pitch.

Another funny coincidence of this situation

The Reds almost drafted Derek Jeter, but instead took Chad Mottola. Oh, and the Reds traded Paul O’Neill to the Yankees.

Wow, if I felt to the need to inflict violence

Jim Bowden would be #1 on my list. Seriously Bowden is rather lucky that the hardcore armed wing of Redscounty has a long term memory that is totally fucked from methamphetamines.

Ugh

Of course I can take solace in the fact that the Reds almost certainly would have converted Mo to a starter’s role and batted Jorge 8th his entire career.

Rivera was a starter in the minors

66 of his last 80 appearances in the minors were as a starter, including at least his last 51games.

Can’t understand why they would have turned him down either. In 1995 in the minors, he threw 30 innings, struck out 30 batters, and walked 3. It was probably because he sucked in the big leagues that year: 67 innings, 51 Ks, 30 BB, 5.51 ERA.

Posada had batted .255/.350/.435 in AAA that year. Pretty good for a 23-year old catcher, but obviously not as promising as what the 22-year old Goodwin did in CF: .264/.327/.329. Goodwin was clearly more MLB ready. Posada had 0 big league plate appearances at that point (AND HE WAS A YEAR OLDER!!!!). Goodwin had already put up 316 big league PA as a 22 year old. Nevermind the fact that he hit .263/.301/ .332 in those plate appearances..

That's cute Slyde,

Bringing up stats in a discussion of Bowden’s decision making.

It’s very simple: Goodwin was an OF, and Bowden had a creepy fetish for them. Oh, and he didn’t give a damn about pitchers

his 13 million dollar contract would suck so bad

especially since he produces about the same as Gomes.

Actually, when I actually look at his numbers, he isn't as bad as I thought.

I thought he had been in a downward injury spiral for the last three years. I guess I just haven’t really been paying attention/had him confused with someone else.

No doubt though, it would be a dumb move for us.

going into last season, I had already bought into the Johnny Damon is done narrative. Turns out, he’s never really stopped being a very good hitter. Who knew?

Scott Boras and his PowerPoint presentation

Damon’s got close to 2500 hits already. He should cruise to 3000.

by ken on Dec 13, 2009 1:14 PM EST up reply actions

If he plays another 4-5 seasons at close to the same level...

But he’s 36.

Let me write out a formal proof for you.

by Gray on Dec 13, 2009 6:23 PM EST up reply actions

He doesn't need 4 or 5 years at his current level

2 or 3 years as a starter will put him close enough that he’ll hang on as a part-time player to reach 3000. Plus, he’s been pretty durable and should age well given his skill set.

by ken on Dec 13, 2009 8:32 PM EST up reply actions

He only needs 5 more seasons of 115 hits

given that someone is going to give him a larger than necessary contract this off-season, I would suspect that he’ll be given plenty of playing time. Unless his talents completely collapse – like I thought they had without looking – he shouldn’t have any trouble reaching 3000 hits.

And given his association with NYY and BOS, he’ll be an HOFer.

really?

Damon a HOFer? but he was a Moneyballer!

but what does that matter?
