Around SBN: SB Nation interviews Jerome Bettis

It appears in the bag..probably will get details tomorrow and some one can create a fan post for commentary.

I just don't get it. I guess it is the difference between being a Madville kind of guy who likes to build and create his own projects from pretty much scratch vs B.Kelly (no not R. Kelly) who has given up on that kind of endeavor to go to Notre Dame and be just another name in a long line of names. He could have been the greatest coach in UC Football history...he'll never be the greatest in ND history.

There is an overriding misconception that Clutch is an overriding misconception.

by Madville on Dec 10, 2009 6:28 PM EST reply actions

He has to go to ND.

He’s worked his entire career to improve his situation and that of his family’s. Why does he have to stop at Cincinnati?

Also, he just coached an undefeated team, beat more ranked opponents than any other team in the nation, and still finished 4th. Why stay there?

by Brian B on Dec 10, 2009 7:01 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Greed? Ego? Certainly not the challenge...unless you consider the challenge of staying employed...

1. He can make almost as much money in Cincinnati and have job security and the satisfaction of finishing the job.
2. The pressure and time obligations at ND will increase geometrically, so he can forget about seeing his family or having any life at all outside of football.Notre Dame.
3. He just finished 3rd in the BCS series in only his 3rd year. – he could finish 3rd at ND and have the same result except instead of being loved, support and encouraged…he’ll get tons of shit from rabid ND fans.
4. He will be limited by the level of player that he’ll have access to at ND – they actually have academic standards.
5. He will go Hell if the ND Fighting Papists don’t win a National Championship.

I’ve met Brian Kelly and talked at some length with him. He is really personable, very direct and is (was) having a lot of fun coaching Division 1 NCAA football. I’m sad for the UC and I actually sad for coach Kelly, his family and his future…Notre Dame strikes me as a way different kind of place than Kelly has ever coached at, I don’t know how well he’ll mesh in a big time program…I hope it works out for him.

There is an overriding misconception that Clutch is an overriding misconception.

3. (revisited) He could finish undefeated and 3rd at ND and still not be in the championship game. Except that instead of being loved, supported and encouraged like he’s been at UC…he’ll get tons of shit from rabid ND fans.

You’re a college football coach at a mid-size rising program. If you don’t take the ND offer now, you have to rethink your decision to be in this career in the first place. That’s the kind of opportunity you look back on and say, “why the hell did I turn that down?”

why did bob huggins stay?

Big East basketball and Big East football are not the same.

In basketball, Huggins could build a good team, play in a competitive conference, and have a shot at a national championship every season. In football, Kelly got what he could out of the recruits he could get, played in a mostly crappy Big East conference, and despite having a great season and winning all of their games, they don’t get to chance to play for a championship.

Mardy Gilyard would never have the chance to play at ND

I’m a huge ND fan, I’m a huge Gilyard fan, but I can’t imagine the Domers allowing black folks who are not Obama-esque on their team. It’s gross, its racist…its college football. The closest thing we have left resembling pre-Westphalian Europe.

I wish Kelly all the success he can garner at Notre Dame…but at the same time, I hope he resigns after a few years and comes back to Cincy.

Rooting for Notre Dame

is akin to rooting for puppy torture. My favorite team is Ohio State, and whoever is playing Notre Dame…..and yes, that includes That Team Up North.

I'm from South Bend, cut me some slack

and Notre Dame thinks that it can win with only a certain type of player…I would argue that Ohio State does the same sort of thing in the Tressell Era, look at how many of his recruits talk about the “Family Atmosphere” and all. Coaches want players who’ll fit their system, whatever that system may be.

Someone could write 300 pages easy on the Miami teams of the 80s…fortunately, the Cocaine Cowboys crew made a documentary instead.

Tressel has had his share of thugs

But after the Clarett debacle, he might have become a bit more careful. Also, I think Tressel is a great politician and he and his staff does a lot when it comes to stage-managing the players.

And you get some slack for being from South Bend. Although I give a Notre Dame fan friend crap for being an Irish fan…..and he’s an atheist! He says its because his grandparents are from South Bend.

Oh, and I can’t wait to watch “The U” on Saturday night.

Can you really blame him for leaving?

Brian Kelly had the best possible season with his UC team, winning all of their games. They’re not playing for a national championship. Can you really say “if they would have done just a little bit more, they’d be in that game”? You can’t, it was out of their hands. If you’re Brian Kelly, why wouldn’t you move from that situation to somewhere where you’d be able to play for a national championship every year?

maybe he told his players "Until I find out what the offer is, I intended to stay with Cincinnati"

and they heard, “I intend to stay with Cincinnati” because that was what they wanted to hear.

I don’t see any reason to be upset about this. 2 years ago, people didn’t give a shit about UC football.

Daughter #1 (UC grad and big FB fan) says Kelly will coach in the Sugar bowl.

I guess he’ll coach it now, prior to signing with Nortre Dumb he may have been worried about getting his ass kicked by Fla.. Now if he loses he can say ’Well this is the best UC was gonna get"…if they win he can say “Hey I finished the job…”

I am constantly disappointed by the business side of College sports.Although I’m sure there was some guy at Central Michigan saying the same thing 3 years ago.

"We don’t really care what he has to say anymore," tight end Ben Guidugli said after Kelly informed the team of his decision following a team banquet Thursday, Dec. 10. "He can go talk to his Notre Dame team. We’re ready to move forward with whoever wants to move forward with us. He’s not on the boat anymore."

When we lost Petrino at UL a few years back the feelings was the same. I am just glad Jurich fired Krapthorpe before Kelly took the ND job, because Charlie Strong was the best fucking coach available and we got’em. If the cincy job was open last week he may have gone there.

I don't think it sucks.

Its business. He signed a contract and now he wants out of that contract. In the final analysis it boils down to money and prestige…Notre Dame sure ain’t the plum of a coaching job that it once was. If I’ve got the quote right it is ‘akin to puppy torture’.

Funny. The defender making the tackle

It is a business but then so is academia..

So if athletes have to sit out a year when transferring (even though they are paying customers) why not the coaches too… I know it won’t happen.

So Kelly wins..he gets the big pay out and the University loses and the student athletes lose. I think it is time to start paying the players and quite the whole ‘student athlete’ charade at the D1 level.
