AFL Rising Stars Game Thread

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

If you are sitting all alone at home and are bored tonight, flip your TV on to MLB Network at 8pm.  The Arizona Fall League wraps up with their Rising Stars game.  It's a chance to see some young players who could end up being stars in the big leagues in the very near future.

From a Reds perspective, there should be four farmhands getting playing time tonight.  Chris Heisey is batting 4th and playing LF for the home AFL West team.  Batting right behind him is 1B Yonder Alonso.  Zack Cozart is on the bench for the AFL West team and Mike Leake will be in the bullpen.  Since it is a showcase game, I expect we'll see all of them play.

If you can't watch the game on TV, you can follow along with Gameday.  The game is in Surprise, so if I'm not mistaken, there will be Pitch FX for your viewing pleasure.

wow

It’s actually running pretty well, too.

Just as I always suspected: the bottleneck is on MLB’s end, not mine. It always runs great when no one else is watching.

Amazon

is getting fresh with me.

They have that new “payphrase” thing, where you can type in a phrase to pay at online stores. Yesterday their suggested payphrase for me was “Bubbafan’s secret pleasure.” Today, it’s “Bubbafan’s slight ability.”

I wonder if they’re making suggestions like that intentionally, so people get annoyed enough to sign up and choose their own phrase.

Alonso was caught trying to reach 2nd

I wouldn’t say he was stretching, cuz it really should have been a double. He’s not a fast man.

Yeah, those guys and the Cincinnati Reds. They're a terrible football team. / Because they're a baseball team? / Exactly. You know who's the worst football team? The Philadelphia Flyers. - Best Show

Your 2010 Reds LFer?

I’m getting cautiously excited about seeing Heisey and Alonso in the same big league lineup.

I'm excited about him

I just can’t decide if I’m excited enough to forgo bringing back Gomes

Definitely a good argument.

by Slyde on Nov 7, 2009 8:58 PM EST up reply actions

Id bring back gomes just to give Heisey a little time in AAA

and hope gomes can become trade bait

by sharks on Nov 7, 2009 8:59 PM EST up reply actions

yeah

but that outfield is crowded. I think I’d still bring back Gomes, but Heisey definitely makes it a lot harder question.

Definitely a good argument.

by Slyde on Nov 7, 2009 9:01 PM EST up reply actions

true

but I think they have just enough room for gomes right? the problem arises when you want to call someone up.

I love that not even he knew that he scored and he continued to try to put it in - Evilducks

by sharks on Nov 7, 2009 9:05 PM EST up reply actions

definitely

there is some risk of spending money on Gomes and having him regress to 2008 levels. Probably won’t be able to unload him then.

Definitely a good argument.

by Slyde on Nov 7, 2009 9:07 PM EST up reply actions

They might not have a choice

The Reds may not have the financial flexibility for it to make sense, even if they have they can scrape up the cash to pay him. On Gomes, I can’t figure out if he’s as bad in the OF and vs. righties as he sometimes seems.

I think it's Tony Clark

Who was Bubba’s predecessor in the hearts of many a Yankee fan. But he’s an annoying announcer. Everything’s a gift. Switch-hitting. Running quickly to first base. Chasing down a fly ball (even if you don’t catch it). Hitting a soft single off Mike Leake.
