Question:

Do you think they will have an application I could download some where?
Or will I actually have to write a resume?

as much as i hated him during his presidency, i could see him being commish

i’d say lasorda if he wasn’t so old (and on my bereavement list) or hank aaron … time for it to be a player and not an owner or businessman

i think it needs to be a businessman

it needs to be somebody who can administrate, it at least needs to be somebody with GM experience who can run an organization.

Not sure which joke to make

A) Send Fehr hunting with Vice Commisioner Cheney, problem solved.

B) G.W. Bush would send people to burn down the NFLPA headquarters as a show of force.

C) After three months of work stoppage he could stand on the mound at Yankee Stadium and declare “Mission Accomplished”.

Vote as you see fit.

not trying to censor

but we probably should avoid following this line of discussion any further. it’s pretty close to not being about baseball anymore.

Does that make Cheney a League President?

Or, worse: in charge of discipline?

My official reasoning

Bush would make a good baseball commissioner because it’s something he actually cares about, and whether anyone wants to admit it he has a good deal of charm and charisma. I’m not so sure the presidency was something he wanted as much as something he was groomed for and expected to do, he never looked particularly pleased to be doing it. The man loves baseball, it’s obvious. He built the first field at the White House and looked to be genuinely happy when they held events on it. I also think he would be outstanding in negotiations if only for the intimidation factor……who would be willing to tell the former POTUS to fuck off in a CBA meeting?

I'll bet Donald Fehr would have no problem with that

Don’t know anything about the new union head, except his name is Weiner. Weiner … Bush … uh-huh, huh-huh-huh.

Seriously, I don’t doubt that W lacks the passion or charm for the job. When *61 came out I believe he corrected a minor detail about one of the games that Billy Crystal had missed. But for the next Commish I’d like to see someone truly independent and without ties to the owners. That’s what has bugged me the most about Selig – that he’s been a shill for the owners. I don’t think a former owner is the answer. If I were to make an unorthodox pick, I’d take a close look at a fan with a peerless track record in business. Warren Buffet?

by ken on Nov 30, 2009 10:53 PM EST up reply actions

Jimmy Buffet?

Honestly, I don’t think Bush is realistic because of all of the non-baseball baggage that he’d bring to the table. The owners may like him, and I’m sure there are some players who will too, but at some point his presidency would likely become an issue and likely would distract from the real issues at hand. Just a hunch.

The problem with the whole idea of a commissioner is that the owners get to pick who it is, so they have no incentive to pick a true arbiter. They are going to pick another person to protect their interests, just like they always have.

Definitely a good argument.

You know it's a slow news weekend when...

The potential retirement of the owners’ toady, er, baseball commissioner two (or three?) seasons from now is big news.

I despise Bud Selig

I wish Selig never became commissioner in the first place. He’s ruined baseball for me, to the point where I don’t enjoy watching it anymore because I know that my Reds will never be able to compete with the ridiculously big market teams. Sorry I’m not more optimistic about the team.

I’m glad he’s stepping down, I would have rather seen it sooner. As much as I disliked G-Dub as president, I think he could make a decent MLB commish, at least better than Selig. But then again, who wouldn’t be better than Selig?

by Danimal, Destroyer of Worlds on Dec 1, 2009 3:35 AM EST reply actions

i don't think Bud created that

it just kinda happened under his watch. The players union is too strong, so MLB can’t institute a true revenue sharing system like football has. If baseball wanted that, they would have to break the union, and the only way that will happen is through a strike that would probably knock out at least 1 season. I don’t think MLB can handle another strike, despite the fact the NBA and NHL have had strikes, since MLB’s last work stoppage, people seem to get more upset about MLB strikes.

I feel like money in baseball bothers people more than money in the NBA or NFL. Baseball is the “national past time”, it is supposed by be pure and I think people think the massive amounts of money involved in baseball sours the game.

The lack of CBA did just kinda happen under Bud's watch

But it proves that Bud has no balls. He could have put his foot down. Same with how the steroid issue was handled under his watch. Now it’s a moot point, because juicing is so widespread that it really doesn’t matter anymore.
