Jonny Gomes (OF) CIN - Nov 24
http://www.rotowire.com/baseball/player.htm?id=7036

The Reds are working to try to get Gomes signed before the deadline to offer him arbitration, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's likely that they'll offer him arbitration if a deal doesn't get done beforehand, especially in light of their decision to not keep Laynce Nix.

In my perfect world, Dickerson and Stubbs split time in CF (sure, call it a platoon if you'd like)

Bruce gets the majority of the starts in RF, and then we have guys like Balentien, Gomes and Nix split time between LF and RF

Although, if the Reds wanted to get really crazy, they’d trade and sign Gomes, and go to war in LF with Balentien and Nix.

The point of that? The Reds don’t make the playoffs, or even finish above .500 with or without Gomes.

6 outfielders plus t-virus

that creates an unbalanced roster, and teh Reds already have an unbalanced manager.

I think that Dusty has shown himself to be fair and balanced.

I'd feel more confident

if I didn’t remember how the whole Cantu thing went.

nope

Cantu wasnt yet a free agent, and still isnt. he was just due a modest raise on the peanuts he made that year and the Reds thought it was too much. pretty much the same situation as Gomes.

IIRC, wasn't it like a $2M difference?

coulda been

i think the point of contention was that while he may not have been quite worth the arb raise, he still had value. instead of attempting to trade him and get something in return, Wayner decided to dump him in favor of a Rule 5 pick. it seems like such a not-well-thought-out decision.

I don't disagree that Cantu had value

But perhaps Wayne was having zero luck trading the man voted by his peers to be the worst defensive player in the majors…out of around 750 players.

surely you can't base an organization's signing ability

based on one player…

isn't signing Gomes like rearanging the deck chairs

unless they can trade him for something, just let him go… Lets see what Balentin can do.

Wrong.

I, for one would like to see what a line up with hopefully a full season of Gomes, Rolen, Bruce, Stubbs will produce.
All of those guys missed significant time last season to injury or playing in the minors. The biggest issue facing the Reds is if Jannish can hit at all, followed by what kind of bench will this team have? Oh and we could use another decent starter in the rotation….and then there’s Dusty…its not the Titantic more like an overloaded fishing boat of refugees from Cuba circa 1969.
