Laynce Nix a free agent, Daryl Thompson outrighted off 40-man roster
Mark Sheldon tweets it. I think we all expected Nix to get nixed with so many better, cheaper options, and Thompson shouldn't be a surprise either. Dude's been riddled with injuries. Remember his debut at Yankee Stadium though? That was awesome.
MLBTraderumors also says Craig Tatum was claimed off waivers by the Orioles. Plenty of roster clean-up going on with deadline to set the 40-man fast approaching.
Update at 4:04 PM (by BK):
We have a list of players added to the 40-man roster:
RHP Enerio Del Rosario
OF Chris Heisey
RHP Logan Ondrusek
RHP Jordan Smith
IF Chris Valaika
LHP Philippe-Alexandre Valiquette
LHP Travis Wood
No shockers there, and Wood and Heisey get protection from the Rule 5. Anyone you think should have been protected but wasn't?

Del Rosario, Heisey, Ondrusek, Jordan Smith, Valaika, Valliquette, and Travis Wood were added to the 40-man roster. all had to be protected from the Rule 5 draft.

i think Smith is a bit of a reach. i would have liked to see Dorn protected, but he’s no big loss if he’s drafted. i would have rather left Smith off the roster and kept that last spot for a pick in the Rule 5. maybe Burton and Hamilton spoiled me, but i think we could get lucky.

Dorn fell off the face of the planet last year
After his strong season in 2008, he was a 4th outfielder last year for the Bats, behind guys like Darnell McDonald and Lew Ford. Low draft pick + inability to sustain success = non-prospect.

I still think he could have some value as a 4th OF in a platoon situation,
but it definitely isn’t risky to leave him unprotected. I doubt he’ll get drafted. It sure seems like the Reds don’t like him, though. After that awesome 2008 season he wasn’t even invited to ST this year.
If I hear the word 'perky' again, I'll puke
Yes, and I'm not sure why they protected him over Jukich
I could definitely see him getting drafted, which is a shame. I thought he would be in the crowd for the 5 starter spot in ST.

Dorn started slow, finished on fire
Dorn hit .324/.393/.551 after May ended (243 PA) with 20 walks and 41 strikeouts. The guy has a career line against RHP of .312/.394/.552. There are some American League teams who need a DH who absolutely 100% should draft Dorn and start him every day at DH that there is a right hander on the mound.
oh, and i didnt realize
that this means Thompson made it through waivers. he’s still with the Reds, just not on the 40-man. Tatum was claimed and Thompson wasnt. wow.

Dorn being left off surprises me a little
heisey, ondrusek, valiquette, wood, and valaika were the five I would have for sure protected. del rosario would’ve been next. I may have chosen dorn over smith myself, but I don’t know anything about smith really, so I don’t trust my opinion on that much anyway.

Smith had some injury problems last year
But he could still turn into a middle of the rotation guy.

Buck too, according to this list Doug made
The way I saw it, Buck wasn’t eligible since he’s only been playing professionally for 3 years (2006 draftee, but 2007 was his first season). Jukich has 4 under his belt, but only 3 with the Reds.

There is NO WAY someone drafts Buck
He’s not even nearly ready for the bigs. It would essentially be playing with a 24 man roster for a season.
If I hear the word 'perky' again, I'll puke
it would be a 23-man roster
remember, we still have Taveras!
Reds fan for 40 years!
I agree, but isn't Valiquette in a similar situation?
Not only that, but Jukich is much closer than both of those guys, and he wasn’t protected. After a solid season last year, and a spring training under his belt last year, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a team take a chance on him in a long relief role.

do you mean he buys a ticket to watch the other guys compete in Spring Training games. I know I’ve listed him on my own personal starting pitching depth chart but he is really far down. I figured he may see time in the Majors if the Staff is decimated by injuries, but really he probably will have a Justin Lehr like career at best.

Terrell Young much?
That kid was not even close to ready and he went with the first pick. Sure it was Jimbo trying to stick it to the Reds perhaps, but crazier things have happened than taking a good arm coming off an injury and hiding them at the back off a bullpen or several rehab stints in the minors in order to acquire them on the cheap.
especially with his injury issues
he will need some minor league time to get right. Although somebody may draft him, claim he’s injured and let him spend 30 days on Minor League rehab. But still you are probably right.

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
it would be an emotional punch to the gut to see Harang sold
since he was the first solid starting pitcher the Reds have had since Pete Harnisch. Plus his value is in the tank right now, and honestly I think he was trending up, his ERA was going down, he was pitching deep into games. I think he suffered a hick up thanks to the rain delay, but honestly I think he could have finished strong like Bronson, reached the 200 inning plateau, and got his ERA below 4.
"There is no harder thing than to have Glenn Beck outlive your child."-The Onion
by justin007000 on Nov 20, 2009 11:32 PM EST up reply actions
actually i retact my statement about the rain delay game
The rain delay occurred in his second to last start in May, his last start in May he sucked, but he put up an ERA of 3.38 in June. In his 5 June starts he threw 7+ innings 3 times, he knocked out after 2 innings because of a 2 hour rain delay, and he had one start he only pitched 4.2 innings. He actually had a bad July with an ERA of 6.60. But even so that was somewhat screwed by Dusty’s use of him. Remember the July game where he gave up 5 in the first, but then threw 6 scoreless innings and Dusty let him pitch the 8th with almost 110+ pitches under his belt? So 7 innings of 5 run ball (which isn’t good for an ERA) turned into 7 innings of 7 ER ball (which is even worse).
I think Harang’s ERA was bloated due to some bad luck, and misuse. It seemed like last year the opposition was just “hitting ‘em where they ain’t” when Harang started.
I’m predicting Harang to return to top of the staff material next year with 220 innings, 200 K’s, and an ERA in the range of 3.6-3.9.
I just hope he does that in Cincinnati, rather than somewhere else, because I’m guess right now if the Reds trade him they will eat some of his contract and not get much in return. I’d hate to see the Reds get a mid level prospect and pay $4-6M so Harang can pitch else where.
Honestly Harang might be my favorite Red, and if they can get the right price I would like him to extend his tour in Cincinnati.

Usually don’t rec stuff that doesn’t make me laugh, but it’s good to see some passion from Justin— aside from the frustration we all show with the indecision and lack of direction from the front office.
Besides, I love me some Aaron Harang. Love the story about him riding his bike around the city as part of his conditioning. Dude pitches with a lot of heart and will do anything for the team. Reason # 941 why I’d make a lousy GM— I feel emotional loyalty to players like that and it gets in the way of business.

The Yankees
added a slew of youngsters to the roster, and outrighted Shelley Duncan (the other son of Dave Duncan) to make room.
This is the second time Shelley’s been outrighted. He therefore has the right to refuse the assignment, and he’s said he’s going to do it. He plans to become a free agent if he clears waivers.
The Yankees were never too keen on him, but I think he might be a very good hitter for someone. He’s corner outfielder/first baseman, but his defense is not impressive, and neither is his baserunning. He can rake, though.

The Fay
got some news from Jockstrap:
I just spoke with Walt Jocketty he said he hopes to work out a deal with Jonny Gomes in the next few weeks.
The club made an offer to Laynce Nix, but Nix elected to go the free agency route.
"They still may take it," Jocketty said. "But they want to see what’s out there. We weren’t comfortable with what the arbitration figure would be. With Gomes, we wanted to keep some protection. I still think there’s a chance we’ll get something done with him."
Jocketty said it’s a good sign of the depth in minors that the Reds had to add seven players to the 40-man to protect from the Rule 5 draft. They added RHP Enerio Del Rosario, OF Chris Heisey, RHP Logan Ondrusek, RHP Jordan Smith, IF Chris Valaika, LHP Philippe Valiquette and LHP Travis Wood.
"We struggled with it," he said. "It’s a very good sign. It shows the top of the minors is getting better. We would have added two or three more if we could."
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

We'll do a formal post on this after the new year
And we’ll run these starting in March.
Definitely a good argument.
Ugh
So it sounds like Walt is excited about going with Gomes and Nix again this year in left. Fucker. Heisey/Frazier: blocked.

Its still early Brian....give Walt more time and we'll have C-Dick and Rosales platooning in LF
I may be drunk, Miss, but in the morning I will be sober and you will still be ugly.

why do you hate dickerson so much?

who says i hate Dickerson?
I like C-Dick
1. He’s a lefty
2. He’s a very good defensive CF
3. He’s speedy
4. He can bunt
5. He is environmentally active in trying to help the plight of our planet
the only things about Chris I’m not enamored with is:
1. He’s speedy doesn’t steal bases
2.As a total package due to mediocre offense he’s at best a #4 outfielder
3. He can bunt, therefore inspiring Dusty to give up useless outs
4. He’s at the peak of his career with no offensive upside.
5, It would be real shame if he were to stand in the way of Todd Frazier.
6. i don’t think it is good for his BB career to be dabbling in body building

that’s all
I may be drunk, Miss, but in the morning I will be sober and you will still be ugly.

Agreed on some level.
Gomes is a platoon player.
Nix, unfortunately, is not the right platoon partner for Gomes.
While I’ll admit that I’m a Nix fanboy, it’s b/c I like him more than Taveras and Stubbs, but less than Dickerson and Bruce. I haven’t made up my mind how I feel about Gomes, aside from him not being an everyday player.
As for Gomes and or Nix blocking Heisey and Frazier, if those 2 pups are really that much better, they’ll play their way onto the 25 man roster. To this point, they’ve proved nothing of the sort.

Marty reported that Uncle Walt was sharing a depth chart
That had Heisey #1 in LF. Gomes was #2.
Even better: T-Virus was #3 in CF!

1. Dickerson
2. Stubbs
3. Tavaras
Because Dickerson Deserves 4 months starting after the spotty starts he got with Tavaras around
Or
1. Stubbs
2. Dickerson
3. Tavaras
Because Stubbs has prospect clout.
I’d honestly prefer to see what Dickerson could do on a daily basis. The same argument works for T-Gel. It’s not like you can plaly him back as up in RF, Right?
Frazier is poised to stir up some shit at ST...he could hit his way onto the team. But he's not at Gomes level - yet.
Nix is a great guy off the bench.
Decent PH
all 3 OF positions
Gots some power
and has a cool first name.
I would take him over C-Dick for a bench guy.

not needed with
Bruce, Stubbs, Balentin, Taveras, Dickerson, and Gomes. Hopefully they DFA T-virus, so he isn’t blocking Balentin or Dickerson.

I would assume that Nix chose free agency because the Reds offered him a minor league deal with an invite to ST
I’d bet he’s looking to see if he can get a major league deal first. I don’t get the impression the team values him all that much, and with the logjam in the outfield I don’t know why they would lock up a roster spot by giving him a major league deal.
If I hear the word 'perky' again, I'll puke
There is a logjam in the outfield but it isn't like
when they had a logjam of Kearns, Dunn, Griffey, and Pena, or Kearns, Dunn, Griffey, and Guillen.

Nix is most valuable to the Reds off the bench,PH and defense..maybe an occasional split with Gomes.
This role is not one i would wish on any of the young players..they need to play.
I may be drunk, Miss, but in the morning I will be sober and you will still be ugly.

Balentin won't make it through waivers
Dickerson as you have said is a 4th outfielder. T-Virus can be released so….
Bruce
Stubbs
Gomes/Balentin
With Dickerson around to spell them.
