Todd Frazier injured, not playing in winter league...

Just got the news from Todd myself this weekend at a nightclub...

I commented on this in another post, but i just thought id make a post for it since there is really no good reds news lately.

He informed me of his decision to stay home and rest his knee up so he can go into spring training at 100% and not risk further injury.  He didn't go into detail about his knee injury, but i assume it is minor, as he walked without a limp.

Doesn’t really matter if he plays or not, he is the future of the Reds along with Votto and Bruce. That trio of hitters is the key to us posting an above .500 year. Let’s hope he gets the call sooner rather than later because a kid like Todd produces no matter what level he plays at. He is a winner.

There were also all these ladies buying Todd drinks. Hot ones!

Both hot drinks and hot ladies. You ever had mulled cider at a club? Fucking fantastic, it is! Then Todd beat up a guy who had it coming.

The Hiroshima Carp

did not renew the contracts of two former Reds. Manager Marty Brown signed with the Golden Eagles instead. Andy Phillips, despite hitting .265 / .500 / .339, with 15 home runs (not bad for half a season), was not renewed either. The Carp signed Justin Huber instead.

No word yet on whether Andyfan will follow Brown to the Eagles, sign with another Japanese club, or come back to the states.

i was all up ons Luxury Liner in college

sigh, back when my meager wages were spent on beer and records, instead of rent, area rugs, medical bills, car insurance, and student loans.

by Charlie Scrabbles on Nov 17, 2009 9:02 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, area rugs do not rock.

That was my first taste of Emmylou. There was a Social Distortion song (‘Making Believe’) that someone told me was originally hers and I wanted to hear it but that was back in the day before you could just clickety-click-click to a song you’d like to hear and then 99 cents later it was yours to slide into a little pocket of your backpack. BACK IN MY DAY you had to just keep that name with you and check for her CDs whenever you were in a record store and you could remember her name.

I finally found her in Athens while at my first ever record store midnight release promotional party thingy. I walked home with ‘Luxury Liner’ and ‘Fear of a Black Planet.’

Damn. I used to be so much cooler than an area rug.

I watched and "Cosmos" as a kid.

I didn’t ahve cable and I loooooved PBS.

Although my favorite thing on TV as a kid was when Costas turned it over to Pete Axthelm on NBC’s NFL pre-game show. Pete would make his picks by giving a team ‘theAx.’ God, I loved that.

I found this picture of Pete (he’s the taller of the two handsome gentlemen). Pete died in 1991 of liver failure. I think he was like 45 years old.

by ken on Nov 17, 2009 9:56 PM EST up reply actions

and speaking of the dearly departed...

Francona had this to say about Sea Bass:

Would you like to have Alex Gonzalez back?

At a time of the year when we had a lot of moving parts at shortstop, he was really a stabilizing force. When the ball was hit, you’re out. Nobody more than myself, I appreciated I a lot, because we had a lot of moving parts. Going forward, to have him back, from our front office’s side, if we could get him back at the right price, yeah. We would enjoy that.

The thing to remember with Gonzy, what he did the last six weeks of the season was really helpful. When you look at that .310 on-base percentage, for a full year, if that’s what you’re going to go with, you’ve got to recoup that somewhere else. That’s something to think about.

Thoughts

Really disappointed to see Smit go, and Vazquez put together a nice stretch in Carolina last year. Maybe not major league talent, but he was solid. Losing Shaun Cumberland makes the Medlock/Love Shack trade a wash, and I’m pretty happy to see Lew Ford go.

Actually, I just learned recently that Winston Abreu had spent some time overseas as well. I say let’s pick him up. Dude throws gas.

Sheldon

thinks the Reds might just release Taveras. It would be $4 million down the drain, but no other team wants him, he’s not versatile enough to be a bench player…and, Sheldon hints, he wouldn’t accept a role as a reserve player gracefully.

You gotta be kidding me. He should be kissing the infield dirt, just to be in the big leagues.

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

If the Reds release him

and someone signs him for the minimum, are the Reds off the hook for that amount?

by poojols on Nov 18, 2009 7:40 AM EST up reply actions

If the Reds release him and he makes it all the way through waivers (he will)

then the Reds are on the hook for the $4M, regardless of what he signs for with another team. The only way they can get out of the contract is if he is traded or if someone stupidly picks him up on waivers.

Definitely a good argument.

by Slyde on Nov 18, 2009 8:03 AM EST up reply actions

Is it?

I trust your judgment on this one, but I thought the signing numbers was tacked on to the player’s salary.

Definitely a good argument.

by Slyde on Nov 18, 2009 8:36 AM EST up reply actions

i think ken is right

Taveras will make $4 mil next year, but if he is dropped, clears waivers, and is signed by another team, that team will pay a prorated portion of the league minimum. so the Reds would save a few hundred grand or so.

by Charlie Scrabbles on Nov 18, 2009 9:02 AM EST up reply actions

yes, you're right

Whoever he signs with has to pay at least league minimum.

Whatever that amount is is subtracted from what the Reds owe him.

This is why there’s no reason a bidding war should break out if a player in this situation clears waivers. He gets no financial benefit. He doesn’t care if it’s the Reds or some other team paying his salary. He gets paid the same amount, no matter what team he plays for, or even if he’s sitting at home watching TV.

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

by BubbaFan on Nov 18, 2009 10:06 AM EST up reply actions

also reason enough for just releasing him

I think someone will sign him, and the $400k is probably worth more than what they’d get in a trade since I doubt anybody would take much of his salary.

Definitely a good argument.

i remember him grumbling about playing time in Colorado

he blamed his ineptitude there on not playing every day. like they would sit him on day games and that was just far too disruptive to his strict regimen. so they brought Taveras to Cincy because Jamie Quirk said if you play him every day and let him do what he do, he’d be everything we ever dreamed of.
