That is easily my favorite line of the whole thing.

Eighty-five percent of the f*ckin' world is working. The other fifteen percent come out here. A f*ckin' playground for the cocks*ckers.

I still think Dock Ellis should be the Reds pitching coach.

looking him up on wiki i found this even better nugget ...
May 1, 1974 game against Cincinnati

Ellis attempted to hit every batter in the Cincinnati Reds lineup on May 1, 1974 in an effort to prove a point to teammates. Ellis hit Pete Rose, Joe Morgan, and Dan Driessen in the top of the first. The clean-up batter Tony Perez avoided Ellis’ attempts, instead drawing a walk, and after two pitches aimed at the head of Johnny Bench, Ellis was removed from the game by manager Danny Murtaugh. Ellis’ box score for the game reads: 0 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K.5

my mom loves to tell me about Gibson

I think he is her favorite pitcher, she loves his no-bullshit attitude, and that hitters feared him. She laments that pitchers aren’t like that today, she will watch a game and see somebody crowd the plate and say “Gibson woulda knocked his ass down”.

I’m kind of jealous of her, she lived in St. Louis for a period growing up when Gibson pitched. She told me when she was a little girl her dad took her to games where Gibson and Koufax faced off simply because he knew they would be fast games. I’d like to think this is the game she was referencing. 2 hours and 14 minutes, 1-0 Dogers, Koufax threw a shutout, and Gibson threw 8 innings of one run ball. It is shame Koufax’s arm gave out on him, add 5-10 more years on his career, and he would be Hall of Famers Hall of Famer.

The Bob Gibson statue at Busch

is enough to frighten me. I can’t imagine meeting the man.

I remember Waite Hoyt talking about Gibson when Wait was the Red's commentator.

Hoyt was truly enamored of Gibson’s fearlessness. Hoyt was also drunk a lot…never the less Gibson would just as soon hit any batter who crowded the plate. God help you if you hit a HR off him -plunk….I loved Gibson.
I was pretty young and Gibson was the first black pitcher that I ever saw. Up to that time I assumed that only white players were good pitchers. Ha…
