Former Red Alex Gonzalez's Son Has Been in a Coma for 2 Years
Alex Gonzalez is no longer with the Reds, but I know that there had been some interest from people on here as to the condition of his son, whose illness two years ago forced Gonzalez to miss a large portion of the season. ESPN.com has an article that tells us that "his 3-year-old son, Johan, lies in a hospital bed in Miami. Johan has been in a coma for the past two years, his chances of survival remote."
As many jokes as we've made at Gonzalez's expense, I think we can all take the time to wish him the best. I can't imagine having to go through what he must have gone through over the last two years. Good luck in the playoffs, Alex. And more importantly, may your son live a long and healthy life!

Wow
That really sucks. And, quite honestly, gives him a pass for his play the past two years. And I feel bad because the one game I attended this season, I really unloaded on Gonzalez for making two lazy plays in the field. I know I wouldn’t be able to my job well under those circumstances.
The season doesn't start until the Cincinnati Reds take the field! Reclaim The Opener!!
this was my thought
now i feel pretty bad about any and all criticism leveled on the guy. i cant believe he even played. i guess you do whatever you have to do to cope. i wish nothing but the best for him and his family.

you know his UZR/150 with Boston was 7.0
He’s not that bad. I’m sorry you caught him on a bad day.
BTW, he can’t hit.
Second BTW, I feel so sorry about for his son. Mine is 2 and I can’t imagine the pain that must cause him, watching something so little and fragile and not being able to do anything about it. It would drive you crazy with sorrow, grief, and frustration
That is really, really fucking horrible.
All the best to Sea Bass. He took a lot of flack here, but I think it would have went differently if we’d have known his situation. If it was this bad, I’m wondering if the Reds knew. Would they have made him play if they knew about it?

In the article, Krivsky said he didn't know that Johan was still in a coma until the interviewer mentioned it
So they knew his son was really sick, but it sounds like no one knew the full story.
Oh my god
I know I asked around a bit about any word from his son, but I kind of assumed that no news was good news. What strength it must take to deal with something like that, as well as his own injury troubles, and to keep it private. All the best to Johan, Alex, and the rest of the family. All of a sudden, I’m kind of rooting for the Red Sox to win the Series.
Can we go back in time and trade A-Gon to the Angels or Tigers?

By the way
The SB Nation tech crew is working on some issues and have temporarily turned off the tracking of whether or not you have seen a comment previously. Therefore, all new comments will remain marked as new even if you have read them previously until they turn that feature back on. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Definitely a good argument.
Ahh, that was driving me insane earlier.
I’m kinda OCD about having new comments hanging out there.

Not a person at RR would wish anything but a miracle recovery for Agon's son.
When I criticize any of these guys it is a foregone conclusion that I only criticize their actions and public persona. Does anyone know how this happen to be visited upon Alex’s son?
No wonder Gonzo rarely seemed ‘up’ and also was loathe to smile…Godspeed to Alex and his family.

Not a thing I can say that the rest of you haven't covered...
My thoughts and prayers are with the man and his family. Though it is essentially meaningless in the grand scheme, I hope he has an outstanding postseason that can give him some respite or solace.

Right--it is a profoundly difficult situation
to echo others here, my prayers are with Gonzalez and his family. I cannot imagine how they are dealing with this. Even if the Sox don’t make it (Admittedly, I always root against them), I hope Agon has a good playoff run.
Gonna sound weird
But as someone who has had to ok last rights for one of my children I can say that its quite likely one of the safe havens for Mr Gonzalez might have been amongst his teammates in the locker room.
I’m not nearly as certain about on the field as baseball is a slow moving game and affords one lots of time to think about many things.
Godspeed to Alex and his family.

Alex's son
I can tell you that the single worst thing in the world is a parent losing a child. My heart goes out to him, I would be lost without my daughter.
God bless him and his whole family

All the best to them
That’s gotta be terrible to be going through.

This puts baseball in perspective for me.
I love the Reds. My mood rises and falls with them. That’s because my life is so easy, compared to something like this. There’s no way that this doesn’t affect him on the field.
My thoughts and prayers go out to you, Sea Bass, and Jr. Sea Bass.
