Question to the RR masses

If you could add one former Red to the 2010 roster who would that be and why?

I think the most legitimate arguments could be made for only 2-3 players and i dont want to make a case for any of them here instead preferring to see what the general feedback is.   The more i thought about it the more players i considered.  But, really, i think its a short, short list.

Assuming the current roster is as is, without free agent signings this offseason, who would you select?  and why?

short list

Starting in the mid-70s, I’d only consider these guys:
Davis
Perez
Bench
Larkin

I’d eliminate Perez since he plays one of the few positions that are covered. The other three all play positions of great need. Ultimately it comes down to Davis and Bench, b/c a righthanded hitter with power who also plays great defense is just what the doctor ordered.

I’ll say Bench b/c of his leadership and offensive value at the catcher position.

Also considered Rijo and Soto but feel the offense is the more pressing need.

Larkin

I thought it would be hard to beat '70 or '72 Bench

but I think ‘96 Larking edges him out, given that we’re getting about the same value (1 WAR) at both positions right now.

Yeah, those guys and the Cincinnati Reds. They're a terrible football team. / Because they're a baseball team? / Exactly. You know who's the worst football team? The Philadelphia Flyers. - Best Show

This is what I thought

Larkin over what we have is obviously the biggest upgrade.

Larkin is 45 years old and Bench is 60.

If you read this question a different way (which currently playing former Red would you add), it becomes a whole lot more depressing. Dunn might be the only possible answer.

by riverfront76 on Oct 7, 2009 6:42 AM EDT up reply actions

I read it this way, as well.

Dunn leads the pack, I suppose. Josh Hamilton would be nice. Russell Branyan could be OK if he could play third. Ryan Dempster would look good in the rotation. Pedro Feliciano would be a nice lefty out of the pen. An argument could be made for Brendan Harris at shortstop. Cody Ross wouldn’t be bad, either. Felipe Lopez? Kyle Lohse? Dustin Moseley, when healthy? Jose Guillen?

A healthy Hamilton

Would mean:

Potentially the best defensive CF in the game.
The best defensive RF in the game.
A good defensive LF.

A 23 year old who everyone things is a future MVP.
A 25 year old who, it is said, is still developing his power.
A 29 year old one year removed from leading the AL in total bases.

no matter who the player

you have to qualify it with “healthy”

of all the former reds in the majors, hamilton is so much better that his health issues would be worth the risk

i meant any Red all time

originally i thought it came down to Bench and Larkin, then considered Frank Robinson late.

i think its a no-brainer and it has to be Bench…the best alltime catcher and someone you could plug into the cleanup spot. i’d imagine some of the younger RR’s might not be aware of how great he really was during his prime.

Some of us older ones know what a great catcher he was...but he was better in the #6 hole.

I’d vote for Tony Perez. Move Rolen to 2B, BP to SS
Stubbs CF
Rolen 2B
Votto 1B
Bruce RF
Perez 3B
Gomes LF
Hanigan C
Frazier SS

lmao

Perez was a horrible third baseman.

Why not vote for Morgan at second and Lark at short?

"I have found me a home"

by obc2 on Oct 7, 2009 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes its true he was pretty bad, but I would want him for his offense over anyother former RED

Maybe Frank Robinson in LF would make more sense. But Doggie was incredible and so was Joe morgan he’s my third pick, closely followd by Pete Rose.

no question Bench was one of the greats but he wasn’t the RBI guy that Perez was
Robby in LF would take care of a power RH bat and RBI/HR guy
Bench wasn’t the driving force towards ‘every minute baseball’ that Pete was
He didn’t have nearly as many ways to beat the other team that
Little Joe had
Larkin was a great little player but I’d put Eric Davis in the mix before Larkin

1. Tony Perez
2. Frank Robinson
3. Joe Morgan
4. Pete Rose
5. Eric Davis
6. Barry Larkin
7.Johnny Bench
8. Adam Dunn
9. Ted Kluszewski
10 George Foster

Perez?

Don’t think he can bend down to scoop up any balls at his age.

by Richard L on Oct 13, 2009 9:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Whaddabout Joe?

I think I’d pick Bench, because our catching is worse off than our 2B, but I’m surprised no one has picked Morgan. Check out how good he was! Combine that 1976 OPS+ of 187 with good-to-above average defense, and that’s a player that’s hard to ignore.

by bbjones on Oct 7, 2009 10:47 PM EDT reply actions

Joe is da bomb

but BP is better than league average

i’d rather have Bench and BP than Hanigan and Morgan.

"I have found me a home"

I agree with that.

Heck, I’d rather have Bench and Frazier, with BP at short.

But Morgan is still good enough to make you think twice about it.

Gimme Eric the Red in left,

Bench catching, Larkin at SS, and Mario Soto on the mound.

by Pops Daniels on Oct 8, 2009 1:52 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah Pops then add

Perez at 3B
Klu at 1st
Morgan at 2nd
Jr. in CF
Pete in RF

That’s a decent enough lineup of Red’s greats that even Dusty couldn’t screw up

Jay Bruce will become a major league baseball STAR, starting in April, 2010.....

by Madville on Oct 8, 2009 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Take a look at these:

4. Barry Larkin – Great SS, but we need someone who can play more than 90 games a year.
3. Johnny Bench – Great C, and durable as steel, but still only 1 WAR.
2. Johnny Almaraz – He did more for this organization each year than 1 WAR.
1. Lou Piniella – He smacks the hell outta slackers and malcontents. No BS with Lou. Respected worldwide, and can squeeze the most out of his pieces, unlike Dusty who squeezes the suck out of every mediocre player. Just on filling out lineups alone, Lou might be good for 3 more wins than Dusty. That’s our biggest room for improvement.

I also thought about Frank Robinson and Ernie Lombardi…then I put my trousers back on and cleaned off the cat.

Keep your shit off my whimsy.

by PeteyHendrix on Oct 8, 2009 2:33 PM EDT reply actions

Sparky.

More respected than Lou and can draw up a better lineup. He had weapons in Detroit in ‘84 but I still think Lou’s group in Chicago the last two years has been more talented than anything Sparky had in Detroit. Sparky got the best out of his guys, Lou — on the other hand — has become a bit of the Ron Zook of MLB.

Absolutely not Larkin

I’d go Rose if we can only pick one guy. Versatility, dependability, longevity, durability, and helped get the most out of everyone he played with, including those mid eighties Reds teams. There are a lot of good ballplayer to choose from, buy I can’t see how any one of the others can impact the entire team as much as Pete.

by Brian B on Oct 9, 2009 2:24 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Also, if Rose had access to Steroids, he'd have 100pts more SLG

my pick is Bench. Greatest improvement for any position (besides Larkin, maybe) but Bench’s skill set is better, his defense and leadership was incredible. And lest we forget, he was a bright big shining star, and was the sort of person people actually cared about. The Reds need one of those.

The guy really is trailer park trash…but the FMM and I would go to as many games as we could, especially in 1975 and even more in ‘76. We’d scalp tickets and try to get as close 3B as possible because Assholeer Pete was so intense – every second baseball.
