Saturday Morning Poll: Who Should be the Reds Next Pitching Coach?
I'll let you all debate this in the thread, but I figured I throw up a poll to see what people are thinking.

No Brantley as an option?
This is not the thoroughness I’ve come to expect from RR Original Content™
Made from 100% Recycled Awesome,
i'd actually like to see that happen if we can't get duncan ...
… it would at least get him out of the booth
"Some times you get lucky; some times you get Willy Taveras." - Teh Fay
yeah, i wouldn't really want brantley as pitching coach
but i figure the team will probably suck either way, but like you said at least we wouldn’t have to listen to teh cowboy.
who knows, maybe they could get sean casey!
Made from 100% Recycled Awesome,
I've listened to Casey do a couple of Red Sox games
Surprisingly, he’s not a whole lot better than Beantley, IMO.

What else would you categorize it under?

Not a category, try again

The most important quality in a pitching coach is a hilariously smutty name
I nominate Jon Coutlangus.
Where did he go?
Traded to the D’Backs, then never heard from again. Out of baseball?
Phone's ringing, Dude.
he's spent the last 2 years with Arizona's AAA team
not pitching well, or often. he’s only thrown 35 innings, so i suspect he’s been injured.

Duncan seemsto have become rather a prima donna
Power has done a nice job…either of them would work for me
however despite his whiney-ness Duncan’s record is not to be overlooked
Jay Bruce will become a major league baseball STAR, starting in April, 2010.....
I can't believe you'd show such a disgusting picture!
I mean, look at the cellulite on that girl on the left..kids see this site fro Christ’s sake ’tHan

I may be wrong
but I get the impression that if Soto wanted the job he would have had it by now.
People, please. We're all frightened and horny, but we can't let some killer dolphins keep us from living and scoring
this was my thought
i think he’s perfectly happy running his development facility down in the DR

Ted Power
Anyone who remembered how Ted Power pitched can tell you this is a no nonsense guy. He gets the baseball and works very quickly. If he is the Louisville pitching coach, I would say he has done an excellent job with the young pitchers and the Reds should let him continue the work in the majors.
An argument can be made that if Power is a good teacher
he’s better suited for the minors. I think you want your best teachers in the minors, as long as everyone in the organization is on the same page (i.e. don’t tell a guy something different in the Majors than what you were teaching him in the minors).
Definitely a good argument.
On the other hand, we could still make sweet jokes about Ted Power's name.
Not as great as the Dick Pole jokes, but it’s like quitting smoking – you’ve got to ease yourself off gradually.
But any of you jokesters are free to try to convince me of the comedic potential of the name Leo Mazzone. (FF says that “jokesters” is mispelled, and suggests that I actually meant “foresters”: are any of you foresters?)

Why sin't Bailey's friend who coaches for Texas an option?
"And then there was the USAID guy in Kandahar who drove a giant pink Cadillac, which the locals set on fire one day. If you wanted to destroy something symbolic during a riot, you just could not do better than that. Good stuff." - Ghosts of Alexander
The most important thing that Dave Duncan brings to the Reds is that he is from Texas
Power on the other hand is from Oklahoma…
that about seals it for Duncan.
Jay Bruce will become a major league baseball STAR, starting in April, 2010.....
To be honest
If any of those 4 options are our next pitching coach, I’ll be thrilled.
I would bet it’s Duncan. Walt is rather predictable, but in a good way.

he and Bronson will no doubt have some words
and we can make “dunking” jokes about his name if nothing else
Duncan can rot in Hades
We’re going to add a prick who just accused our best starter of being a cheater? We’d look like total pussies.
Because our 4th place standing really makes us look like manly men, yeah?
I’m more concerned with how well our team plays than how we do or don’t look like “pussies”.
That said, bad Arroyo/Duncan could be an issue.

say what you want
but this had nothing to do with Arroyo cheating. The grounds crew fucked up and put some unmudded balls out there. Arroyo adapted and Smoltz prefered to bitch.
That’s how it went down. Duncan and Larussa took a HOF for a playoff team’s back and noone listens to Dusty and Dick beause the Cards will probably win the pennant.

So how's it work
When Duncan gets asked at the first press conference about the incident (which he will be) does he stick to his guns and insist Arroyo is a cheat or does he admit he’s full of shit?
he difuses the stupid question by saying everyone involved got emotional and that there are no hard feelings
and then, nobody gives a shit
Alway the optimist...I like your think kid...
Screw Him
The guy’s on the edge of senility obviously. Let him collect his Social Security while we stick with somebody who’s been working with the young guys.
That's racist!
Keep your shit off my whimsy.

3 months from now the whole thing will be a funny little anecdote
heck, I bet Duncan and Arroyo hardly care about it anymore right now. The only people that would make a big issue of it is the media.
Definitely a good argument.
I think one night on Arroyo's boat...
…and they could both bury the hatchet. Ladies, take a number and pick up a free acoustic rock CD on your way out.
No fatties.

i feel like Rolen and Taveras were predicated
and not in a good way, i mean sometimes Walt is like a prison shower, you know it is gonna happen, but it isn’t a good thing.
The Reds need a new manager, one like Putin.
great line
i like the Rolen move still

This isn't really relevant to the pitching thing, but I noticed this piece at DDN
Just a nice story, sorry the kid had to come to a sot of crappy game though!
I think it'll be Duncan or Mazzone
Or one of the other “proven” guys. I’d like to see Teddy Power get a shot, and I think he’d do a decent job, but I don’t think he’s got the name most Reds fans are looking for.
I think we’re also underestimating Mr. Perfect as a darkhorse contender. Remember, Tom Browning was going to be the AA pitching coach before his little incident. He’s got plenty of experience working with the pitchers, since he’s around them every year at Spring Training and throughout the season. He’s spent all of last season in the GCL, giving him valuable experience with international players. Is his case worse than Soto’s?
Oh yeah, and Rigo Beltran has done just as well in AA as Power has in AAA. Any chance he gets any consideration?

I love these choices!
#4. Mario Soto – as stated above, he’s happy at home in the D.R. But I suspect he’d be good.
#3. Ted Power – Nice choice – just not as good as the following two choices. Plus, we know he’s good at the AAA job, which does differ a bit from the MLB job.
#2. Dave Duncan – Great choice. But isn’t he’s mostly known for squeezing great work out of marginal veteran players, rather than building great careers from young budding stars?
#1. Leo Mazzone – This would be far and away my favorite choice. Not only has Mazzone proven that he can deal well with veterans, but also has proven he can take young studs and lead them to crafting bountiful – and sometimes HOF – careers. Among his pitchers’ accomplishments with the club are four ERA titles, six Cy Young Awards, and nine twenty game winners.
Mazzone has earned a reputation as one of the best pitching coaches in the modern era, having developed and coached perennial all-star pitchers such as Tom Glavine and John Smoltz. Greg Maddux also enjoyed his best seasons under Mazzone. Over the years, a number of pitchers joined the Braves and enjoyed some of their finest seasons under Mazzone only to regress after leaving. Denny Neagle, John Burkett and Jaret Wright are some of the most notable examples.
And let’s not lose sight of the “throwing program” that Leo instituted with the Braves. e IIRC, he has his pitchers throw daily to keep their arms strong, solidify mechanics, and prevent injury.
John Smoltz, Tom Glavine, and Greg Maddux each had 5-YEAR-LONG streaks of not missing a start – following Leo’s program.
Dwell on that a moment, then agree with me. :P

And I still think that Daniel Cabrerra may have a future … as a pitcher.

I am uncompromisingly against any pitching coach named Leo
Jay Bruce will become a major league baseball STAR, starting in April, 2010.....
i want Soto
I don’t know if he wants to spend 6 months of his year in Cincinnati, as others have reitterated. But I want somebody know and different and Soto is just that. I’m tired of having St. Louis’s retreds, and who knows if Duncan can replicate his sucess in Cincinnati. I just want something more inovative than Duncan, I want the Reds to do something new.
The Reds need a new manager, one like Putin.
