Rest of staff to return

Well, that’s something. If we do somehow get Dave Duncan, I will gladly agree to keep Brook Jacoby around.

Also, Mark Berry continues to have a job.

Just think what he could do with our starting pitchers next year...

like Kip Wells and Justin Lehr!

Let me write out a formal proof for you.

Hey 'than, didn't people, especially Oriole fans, believe the same thing about Leo Mazzone?

I wonder if Duncan is magic away from LaRussa and the Cardinals.

Not saying anyone who wants is wrong, just wondering and being a contrarian

I still believe the same thing about Leo Maazone

He shoulda been here the last 2 years

actually i'm a bit surprised

since Pole and Dusty go back to Chicago and Pole was Dusty’s bench coach.

But maybe we are going to get Dave Duncan.

The Reds need a new manager, one like Putin.

Did you look farther back?

Because Dick Pole may be the only pitching coach Dusty has ever had. I read that somewhere, which is why I say “may,” buy I can’t recall where. Someone who is not mobile right now check on that?

Duncan is tempting, but I think we’ve done fine in the last few years with developing the pitching staff. I’d hate to fuck with things now. With Duncan in place, I can see Walt signing all the Kip Wellses, Kyle Lohses, and Jeff Suppans he can get his hands on so he can continue turning garbage into gold. I don’t have the stomach for sitting around and waiting for the Reds to be as lucky as the cardinals have been.

by Brian B on Oct 2, 2009 7:34 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

its not luck when it happens over and over again

Lohse, Carpenter, Pinero, Franklin ……were passed over by alot of teams and Duncan turned them all into total studs.

by Dave from Louisville on Oct 2, 2009 11:14 PM EDT up reply actions

i've read a few articles at VEB that i'm too lazy to link at the moment

Franklin has been insanely lucky this year, but he has been falling back to Earth since the All Star Break. Carpenter was a talented pitcher who was an injury retred. Last season Lohse had an ERA+ of 113, his career ERA+ is 96, so that has to be within a standard devatation or two from his career norms. I mean he always had the ability to be a pitcher like that, and he just held it togeather for a season. Lohse’s ERA+ is only 86 this year but he has been hurt, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he falls back to being a league average pitcher next season (if he is healthy). Pinero really struggles to miss bats, he has a K/9 of 4.3 and his inability to miss bats makes it difficult to believe he can sustain his sucess, his BB/9 is 1.1 so we can give Duncan some credit for that, but I’m guessing next year he will be hit much much much harder. VEB also posted an article that said something to the point that Pinerio’s sucess will be difficult to maintain.

Is it Duncan or were the Cardinals insanely lukcy?

Rothschild was Dusty's pitching coach in Chicago

Pole was his bench coach. I don’t know how Rothschild and Hendrey escaped the Prior/Wood fiasco unharmed, while Baker gets all the blame. I mean I feel like Rothschild was sitting right next to Dusty, and it is his job to advise the manager about the pitching staff and he could have said “Dusty maybe letting Prior through 135 pitches in September in a game with a 5+ run lead is a bad idea”, or Hendrey coulda said “As an organization we will not allow our starting pitchers to throw more than 120 pitches, and ideally we would like you to keep them around 110”. It seems that it was an organizational failure, not just a Dusty failure.

clearly Brook Jacoby has earned his paycheck this year

thank god they fixed the problem with the coaching staff.

Definitely a good argument.

by Slyde on Oct 2, 2009 4:31 PM EDT reply actions

seriously...

no hall of fame hitter ever said jacoby was the best hitting coach he’s ever had, but greg maddox swears by pole being the best pitching coach he’s ever had.

by GrooveLeg on Oct 6, 2009 11:56 AM EDT up reply actions

Maddox also swears that he was the best quarterback in XFL history

Mattox also swears he was a Cincinnati Rule V pick.

i mean sometimes Walt is like a prison shower, you know it is gonna happen, but it isn’t a good thing.

by justin007000 on Oct 6, 2009 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions

By the way

this Reds team will surely give up the fewest runs since 1999. They will likely score the fewest runs since 1997. And the pitching coach was the one coach that was fired?

Definitely a good argument.

by Slyde on Oct 2, 2009 4:36 PM EDT reply actions

The only thing that makes sense with Pole is if there is some sort of agreement in place with Duncan or someone

Regarding Jacoby, I’m not a fan, but who massively underperformed this year? Vottto, BP, Gomes, Nix, Hanigan, Dickerson, and every other youngish player played about how we thought they would or better. Bruce’s struggles are largely due to bad luck, and his plate approach has definitely improved.

Are we going to blame Jacoby for Taveras, Rosie, Janish, Gonzo, etc? Those guys just aren’t good, it’s not his fault.

I'mma let you finish, but....

by nycredsfan on Oct 2, 2009 5:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I am ready and eager to blame Dick Pole for Jacoby's inability toto help Jannis and Rosy

And I’m pretty sure Dick had something to do with Stubbs being told to change his entire approach to offense while at AAA…come to think of it Pole may have been the entire reason for Dusty’s massive failure as a forward thinking creative manager.

After Duncan’s ridiculous tantrum over Bronson…well it makes me wonder if he’s not getting too old and cranky to be coupled with Dusty and Jackoffoby…

Billy Hatcher for manager

by Madville on Oct 2, 2009 5:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I disagree on Bruce

yeah, he was hurt by bad luck, but some of that luck he created himself too. His approach wasn’t good for much of the season.

Definitely a good argument.

by Slyde on Oct 2, 2009 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions

He maybe got a bit pull happy, but he cut down on his Ks and raised his BBs

that’s pretty good development from a 22 year old at the MLB level

I'mma let you finish, but....

by nycredsfan on Oct 2, 2009 10:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Hey

Janish barely played this year, yet he racked up his 20th double last week. I think he’s earned a shot next year. Just don’t bat him second just because hes a shortstop.

by blotzphoto on Oct 3, 2009 9:03 AM EDT up reply actions

I want the Enquirer headline tomorrow to be

“Reds Pull Dick Pole from Coaching Staff and Pray for Improvement to Offense”

Definitely a good argument.

i'll rec that

interesting

to me because it sure seems like the pitching was a lot more successful than the hitting for most of the season.

Don't pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he'll just kill you.

by Caleb on Oct 2, 2009 6:29 PM EDT reply actions

I was thinking this may have something to do with Edison

Seriously, Pole has show that he has no control over the innings pitched by the guys that go to the Dominican. THAT IS HIS JOB! And he hasn’t told Dusty how to manage HIS bullpen.

He’s the one that was talking about EV throwing like 100 pitches in a start down there, and what did he do when he found out that info last winter NOTHING. That’s like your buddy calling you from a bar saying your girlfirend is making out with another guy, and then you don’t beat his ass and kill her dog. Whatever you do in that situation ….inaction is unacceptable.

by Dave from Louisville on Oct 2, 2009 6:31 PM EDT reply actions

Why not?

Dusty doesn’t run this fucking team. Nor does Arroyo.

by Dave from Louisville on Oct 2, 2009 6:50 PM EDT up reply actions

You're right

Dusty does nor run this team. Just ask Corey Patterson, Willy Taveras, Darnell McDonald, Ramon Hernandez, and Alex Gonzales.

this is stooooopid

why fire the pitching coach at this point in the season? stay classy, reds front office.

who cares?

Maybe these guys ask and are told as a courtesy that their contracts are or are not going to be extended. I’m sure there’s a reason for this kind of thing when I happens.

by Brian B on Oct 2, 2009 8:51 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

1st Inning

With a pitching staff that’s somewhere in the middle of giving up runs in the NL, we managed to lead the league (majors?) in 1st inning runs allowed. That seems to me to indicate that pre-game preparation and game planning were poor. With all the young pitchers up or coming up, I think they’ll go with Power.

by no1marauder on Oct 2, 2009 7:35 PM EDT reply actions

Ooohh

My vote goes to Power.

RR listens in on the Dick and Dusty show one last time-

Dusty: Hey Man, sorry about your news"
Dick: Huh?
Dusty: You know getting let go and all.“.
Dick: Well it really wasn’t my fault
Dusty: Yeah man, sure, part of the game”
Dick: Well Harang is old and hurt, Bronson didn’t start paying attention until the second half, Volquez hurt himself, Cueto is a rookie, Bailey is a prick, Owings wouldn’t shave,Belizzle had no control, Masset wanted to start, Corenda can’t speak the language, Lincoln and Bray were against me,Maloney can’t break a pane of glass, Arthur Rhodes threatened me, the only good guys I had were Lehr and Wells and they didn’t get any run support and that fucking midget lefty didn’t like me either"
Dusty: Dick, man -Cueto was here last year…Belisle was traded last……Hey man if the slip fits…wear it man, wear it."
