Price left the Diamondbacks in May, when A.J. Hinch was named manager there. He was the pitching coach there for 2 1/2 seasons. Prior to that, he was the pitching coach for the Mariners from 2000-2006.

So while it's a coach with some previous success, it's not a big name like Dave Duncan. An interesting strategy, and a little disappointing considering who we were hoping would be considered.

What do you guys think?

Does this mean we lose Ted Power?

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

I hope not, but probably

Not sure why that would necessarily happen

Maybe he’s happy coaching in the minors right now since he gets to work with young players. Maybe not.

Definitely a good argument.

Fantastic news!

He'd be a horrible pitching coach.

But I’m sooooo relieved it’s not Duncan.

Just looking around the ol' interwebs for some info on him

This was from AZ Snake Pit:

In his two years as the pitching coach for the Diamondbacks, the team’s hurlers have posted an ERA+ of 114 and 115, second and tied for second in the league respectively, and a marked improvement over the couple of seasons before that. Now, part of that may be due to having Brandon Webb in full flight [that’d help any rotation], but Doug Davis has also shaved more than half a run off the ERA from his last season in Milwaukee, even moving to a hitter-friendly park.

He did have some success in AZ, but he also had Brandon Webb and Dan Haren. So, it’s hard to tell. I’m trying to dig up more on him.

Definitely a good argument.

More from the Snake Pit

Here:

Coming into the season, our bullpen was regarded as flawed, and our rotation behind Brandon Webb had questionmarks over almost every member. But, by the end of the year, we had the second-best ERA+ in the league, Arizona’s 114 just trailing the Cubs 115. With the equal-lowest OPS+ in the NL (89), it’s clear that our pitching won us the division, and Price’s role in that, while difficult to quantity, has to be appreciated. Much as he did in Seattle, also under Melvin, he has helped craft a top-notch bullpen out of parts no-one really rated. In 2007, playing home games at one of the most hitter-friendly parks, they had an ERA of 3.95. Our top seven relievers by innings pitched were better yet, with a 3.47 ERA over more than 400 innings. But Brandon Webb also improved and Doug Davis had one of the best years in his career, while Yusmeiro Petit and Micah Owings proved better than league-average in their rookie campaigns.

I get the impression they respected him and his work.

Definitely a good argument.

A little insight into Price

From AZ Central:

What do you think is the hardest part of the job for you?

“Everybody is unique in their own way, physically and emotionally. I think to find a way to communicate what you mean to different varieties of athletes is the biggest challenge, without question. My feeling is you don’t get the most out of your players unless you trust that you are working on their behalf. That you are legitimate. A lot of these guys they don’t trust from the word go. You have to earn their trust.”

Definitely a good argument.

that seemed awful quick

I figured it was going to take longer than 3 weeks to name a new pitching coach. Why not Ted Power?

The Price is WRONG, bitch

…just had to be the first to get that out of the way.

I asked Jim from AZ Snake Pit to give me a rundown on Price

This is what he said:

Always difficult to say how much effect a pitching coach has, but he was named Coach of the Year in 2007 by Baseball America. However, that season is looking more and more like a fluke; the bullpen was notably worse last season, and it’s hard to think of any real pitching talent the team has nurtured to fully blossom in his tenure here. Max Scherzer is about the only young guy I can think of, to come up through the ranks since 2006 and do much. Brandon Lyon, maybe? However, Price did seem to find success with Juan Cruz, who hasn’t been as effective before or since his time in the desert.

I don’t recall any problems with overuse of young arms, however, so hopefully he may be able to help counter Dusty’s undeniable tendencies in this area! He does seem to be fiercely loyal: he was very much Bob Melvin’s man, and had some harsh words to say after quitting when Melvin got fired:

Be interesting to see if Baker can inspire the same loyalty.

Definitely a good argument.

Price comes off as a jerk in that article

Loyalty to a former manager is one thing, but there’s no need to take swipes at his replacement.

If next season is anything like this season

Maybe it’s not a good idea to hire a pitching coach with a track record of quitting after his manager is fired in the middle of the season.

maybe he won't like dusty

and we can see a fist fight in the dugout.

I note that he had a long spell with the Mariners

I wonder how much say Bill Bavasi had in this signing.

by Brendanukkah on Oct 18, 2009 10:24 AM EDT reply actions

That second sentence of yours makes me very nervous

He should never have any say in any Reds signing, ever. I hate that he’s part of the organization.

I'mma let you finish, but....

by nycredsfan on Oct 18, 2009 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions

While Bavasi sucks...

he knows the Mariners organization enough that he can help us with trade info.

Other than that, he should be tied up like the gimp and only brought out when Spider catches a Fly.

Al Gore didn't invent the internet. But he did more for the internet than probably anyone you'll ever meet.

Ted Power would have been the choice of choices

Hope this guy is as good as Ted. I’m kinda of glad that Duncan is out of the picture. He is great but seems like a whiner. Mads don’t like no whiners.

Jay Bruce will become a major league baseball STAR, starting in April, 2010.....

is the organization starting to marginalize Dusty?

Dick Pole wasn’t a Dusty hire but he was Dusty’s man, they go back to San Francisco. What are the odds Dusty still works in Cincinnati in 2011?

Right now, it doesn't matter....

…..b/c the pitching coach is going to have a difficult time counteracting the behavioral patterns of a manager who sees starting pitchers much in the same way a pimp looks at a prostitute.

Well, there is a starter named Harang...

…and he was our ace, or what constituted one. I’ll give Dusty this much. He didn’t saw the arms off like he did in Chicago. Unfortunately, the pitching coach isn’t allowed to pick our leadoff hitter.
