Beware History
For two straight years now, on the final weekend of the season, the Milwaukee Brewers have played a series against that years division winners. The title was decided a bit before each of those series this year and last, and as a result, the opponent, 2008 Chicago Cubs, and the 2009 St Louis Cardinals, rested starters, played it easy, etc. and wound up losing games that were meaningless for their playoff chances, that they probably should have won if they were giving it their all.
Along with that final series nap, each team went on to then get swept in the first round of the playoffs, not being able to switch their performances back "on". If you believe in the need for momentum, these two straight years "taking it easy" against the Brewers in the season finales could be a big reason for those quick, first round playoff exits. It should also be noted that the 2008 Cubs finale in Milwaukee is also a contributing factor to the Brewers making the playoffs(that and David Wright missing about 4 different rbi chances that would have won games for the Mets against the Marlins). In the latter case, not only might they have been too asleep to perform well in the first playoff round, the Milwaukee Brewers could very well have missed the playoffs altogether, making their playoff-less streak 27 years instead of the current 1.
The 2010 season schedules have been released, and the Cincinnati Reds finish the year at home against the Milwaukee Brewers.
I predicted that the Reds were going to finish 2nd this year and win 85 games. Of course some injuries and a down year from Aaron Harang prevented that. Without being able to forecast what the Reds will do this year in the offseason, finishing 2nd might be a stretch if Edinson Volquez is out for a very long time, but I believe they have the talent to make a big push next year. Add to that they could wind up with Tony LaRussa as manager and Dave Duncan as pitching coach, and they might make the run Reds fans have been waiting for since 1990. Big seasons from Joey Votto, Jay Bruce and Brandon Phillips, as well as continued "decent" years from Johnny Cueto, Bronson Arroyo, and bounce back from Harang coupled with a breakout from Homer Bailey are things that could lead to a Reds playoff appearance reality.
Just one word of advice, if you have the season locked up by that final weekend, dont rest your starters and play all of the prospects against the Brewers if you want to get past the first round of the playoffs.

What about the Yankees, they rested their starters for like the last week
Or is this a Brewer’s specific problem. OR as my loving grandmother put it at her 87th birthday this weekend… Only the Yankees can step in shit and come out smelling like a rose. I love you grandma.
Dusty Baker said it was the first [triple play] he’d seen in person. When he was with the Dodgers, they hit into one, but he was in the bathroom.- C Trent

True
But the fact remains that both the 08 Cubs and 09 Cards finished their seasons against the Brewers, were both swept in round 1, didnt play the varsity squad in that series, and the Reds finish 2010 against these same Brewers.
Its kind of like that “every 20 years” thing I heard about when I was in grade school involving presidents dying during their presidency. Didnt happen but there was a pattern. Damn Reagan!

how could you mention "Playoffs" and "final series against Brewers"
and NOT mention 1999?

I wasnt living in Milwaukee at that time
And was not as focused on the Brewers as I am now.
Refresh my memory, I was unfortunately living in the land of some of the worst bandwagon, fair weather fans in the history of the world, Minnesota.

The Reds needed to win two games in Milwaukee to make it to the playoffs
The Brewers were terrible that year. Instead, Milwaukee won the first two games, and Cincinnati finally won the last game of the series to force a one game playoff with the Mets for the wild card. Al Leiter then proceeded to pitch a two-hit shutout, and the Reds missed their best chance at the postseason since 1995.

Looking back a bit
In 07 the Brewers played a part in post season play, although not involved themselves:
Going into the series finale at Miller Park with a 4 game series against the Padres, the Brewers had an extreme outside shot at the divison, being 3.5 out with a week to go and as much as 2 out with 3 to go, going into the last weekend. The Padres, were in the Wild Card lead and simply needed to win 1 of 2 against the Brewers to be playoff bound, and they allowed the incentive less Brewers to sweep them those last two games, forcing a tie breaker with the Rockies, and eventually missed the playoffs.
In 06 the Brewers finished the year against the eventual World Series winning Cardinals.
4 years in a row the Brewers have finished the season against an eventual playoff, or tie for playoff spot, team. Good news for the 2010 Reds.

Why would you say that?
Its just an interesting coincidence/fact that I am illustrating.
In fact, in 7 of the past 10 years, the Brewers have finished the season against a playoff bound team. Seeing as how the Reds finish the year against them next, year, I thought it would be relevant to post the thoughts here.

hmm, guess not.
Sorry that you took it the wrong way, I was wondering if your name came from a song by the third or fourth best white reggae band.

Ah
Its from the Biggie Smalls song, but the only reason I like it and use it is from the South Park episode where Butters is flying on a plane with Notorious BIG to get to LA for Satans big Super Sweet 16 Halloween Party, and butters is signing the song.
