Playoffs Day 5, Thread 2
We filled one thread already and hardly mentioned that the Red Sox have been sent home. I think we can all agree this is a good thing. Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barrymore can suck it.
In case you forgot it's Yankees @ Twins at 7:00, Phillies @ Rockies at 10:00. My official predictions - Twins win 5-3, Phillies win 7-4.
The picture serves no purpose, it's just because I love him.

I'm told
that’s an extremely rude hand gesture on the other side of the pond.

What the hell is with these overtime rules?
First team to score wins?
Let me write out a formal proof for you.
the nfl needs to adopt the college ovetime rules
anyone who disagrees is wrong
Made from 100% Recycled Awesome,
Are there any differences other than that?
If you’re going to make it sudden death, you have to do something like what they do in the NHL, and make an overtime loss equivalent to a tie.
Let me write out a formal proof for you.
college ensures both teams get a chance
nfl is straight up sudden death. first team to score wins, and it counts as a regular win.
no score after the 1st overtime period means the game ends in a tie, and that is super weak
Made from 100% Recycled Awesome,
the whole point of OT
Was to eliminate ties. IIRC, before they adopted these OT rules, the game would end in a tie, unless it was a playoff game.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
this is news to you?
It’s been this way for years.
The first team to get the ball in OT has something like a 65% chance of winning.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Well, I don't really watch NFL football much...
but it’s amazing that it’s stayed that way for years.

yeah, just about everyone hates it
The college rules are better.
And much more exciting. I remember one bowl game where it went five possessions, forcing each team to try for a 2-pt conversion. It was insane.

First off, nice thread pic, jch. I won’t object to any nonsensical postings of Votto pictures.
The Red Sox implosion was pretty terrible. A lot of closer fails thijs post season. I’m not a Red Sox fan, so I didn’t really mind, but I could see the devastation on the fans faces. That was a tough sweep. I think the Angels might win everything.
Bubba, it looks like your Yankees are going to win this series, but I have to sy I’m pulling for the Twinkies!
I would
but I have to do some work. I put a bunch of it off because I was sick. I’m starting to realize I should have just tried to get some done istead of watching “let’s Make a Deal” with Wayne Brady lol.

In baseball news, who should I vote for NL Manager of the Year? I think it is obviously gonna be Jim Tracy, but I’m open to arguments for others.
Definitely a good argument.
For SBN, I think I voted Tracy, Gonzalez, and LaRussa
I think Torre has the best team in the NL at his disposal. There isn’t much to manage there.
Definitely a good argument.
he had to manage through the manny suspension/distraction
i think he did a great job
Made from 100% Recycled Awesome,
love Torre
i’d roll out the red carpet to have him here. aint gonna happen….but i likes pipe dreams.
"I have found me a home"
his wife is from cincinnati!
he’s practically begging to come here!
Made from 100% Recycled Awesome,
And LaRussa had to work without his best pitcher for just as long
and had an offense that was basically Pujols for most of the year.
Definitely a good argument.
Though to be fair...
an offense of just Pujols is still pretty damn good.
Let me write out a formal proof for you.
wainright wasn't there for 50 games?
if you are talking about carpenter, it’s a lot easier to manage without a pitcher for 50 games than it is manny ramirez
Made from 100% Recycled Awesome,
LaRussa did a good job
but was aided by having Pujols and adding DeRosa and Holliday.
"I have found me a home"
Derosa batted .228/.291/.405 for the Cards
I picked Larussa because the Cardinals had no expectations for success. It helps that they have Pujols, but the rest of that offense was mediocre until they got Holliday.
Definitely a good argument.
reminds of Billy Packer way back in on a final four that Kansas was in
when he claimed that some white guy they had was the best straight forward passer in basketball.
Definitely a good argument.
i always expect that the cardinals will win the division
plus a lot of larussa’s success can be attributed to the job that duncan does
Made from 100% Recycled Awesome,
I went with Tracy, Torre, Gonzalez

I love Mongolian BBQ
Mainly because you put whatever you want in the meal. I usually spice it up good and hot, but today I totally forgot to hit the spices for some reason. It was just a boring meal after that.
Definitely a good argument.
bd's sucks

You are correct.

I didn't realize what a great season he had in 2006.
His OPS+ in his full seasons so far:
2005: 107
2006: 144
2007: 117
2008: 137
2009: 177
He led the AL in batting average, OBP, and slugging percentage this year. And started 107 games at catcher. Holy crap.
Let me write out a formal proof for you.
Though he's still no Pujols.
2001: 157
2002: 151
2003: 187
2004: 172
2005: 168
2006: 178
2007: 157
2008: 190
2009: 188
Let me write out a formal proof for you.

Impressive.
Sig lines are for suckas.
it was prolly posted but according to Olney with the LaRussa situation.
Cincinnati Reds: The Reds have already fired their pitching coach, and Phil Rogers reports that owner Bob Castellini is less than enamored with manager Dusty Baker. The connection here is clear: Reds GM Walt Jocketty worked with La Russa and Duncan in St. Louis, and if Castellini really is willing to dump Baker after two seasons, a leap to Cincinnati would be easy — and Castellini would pay.
(One little issue that would have to be dealt with is the question of whether third baseman Scott Rolen would want to play for La Russa; if not, the Reds presumably would trade Rolen, because his presence would not prevent them from pursuing La Russa. Rolen is under contract for just one more season, and La Russa would be a multiyear investment.)
We’ll see what happens. In the past, La Russa has not wanted to consider any of these questions until a season is completed, because he likes to focus entirely on the games at hand. For the 2009 Cardinals, there are no games left to play.
it's the cardinal way
lets get Dusty out of the dugout.
