Reds V. Mudcats, Friday April 3rd
As most of you know the Reds will be playing two exhibition games against a team of their "future stars" -- one on April 3rd in Zebulon, NC and one on April 4th in Dayton, OH.
This is a smart and savvy move by the organization to welcome in the new Double-A affiliate and to reward Dayton fans for their remarkable support of the Dragons.
Tickets for the April 3rd tilt in Zebulon have been on sale since the late fall, but, with the beginning of Spring Training, the promotion for the event will be quite heavy in the local markets. Many good tickets are still available, but I anticipate a rush starting in late February.
Aside from your Cincinnati Havoc-Wreakers, the Mudcats squad will probably feature a lineup with Todd Frazier, Yonder Alonso and Juan Francisco among other young men of exceptional prospect.
So I wanted to put out an early call to any Red Reporters (both the jerks we know and the jerks who lurk) who are interested in going to check your schedules. Also, if you want to send me an email, I can organize an email list that might help us with tickets, updates, rides, places to stay, etc. You can find an email for me on my profile page.
Zebulon, NC is a small town to the east of Raleigh and is an easy enough trek out from the capital city. Here's some information on the event from the N&O:
Tickets for the Carolina Mudcats' April 3 exhibition game against their new major league parent club, the Cincinnati Reds, will go on sale at 9 a.m. Wednesday, the Mudcats announced Monday.
The game, which is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Five County Stadium in Zebulon, will pit the major league team and its Double-A Southern League affiliate.
Tickets will be available at the stadium box office or can be purchased by credit card via phone at 919-269-2287 or at www.carolinamudcats.com.

I may go
My parents are an hour or so away and my dad is interested in meeting me there. I’ll post again if I decide to go.

Hmm, that's a Friday
I might be able to take off work. I’m noncommittal right now, but some spring baseball, followed by a weekend of merriment along Tobacco Road could be fun.

are there trains that run from DC to Raleigh on a regular basis?

there are
they generally take in the neighborhood of 6+ hours and can be extremely frustrating to deal with, but they run do run daily.

6 hours is less time than it would take to drive
given the fact that a jaunt down to even richmond can take five hours at any random time. i love trains.

The DC-to-Raleigh train isn't bad.
I’ve taken it a couple of times before.
There are actually two daily departures. Looks like it’s $72-$90 round trip.
But as MM said, the on-time performance record isn’t so good, mainly because CSX gives their trains priority all the time.
We want to build long period of time. I didn’t come here for the shot run.

amtrak is late everywhere, all the time
i always take that into consideration when i ride. which has been like three times in my life, but still.
i, of course, have to have moved to DC by that time, but if i’m still in ohio then, i’ll probably have killed myself, but if i’m still alive, that means i’m in DC and will be able to make it down there. i’m taking the following monday off, too, to watch our holy opening day.

The game is at 6 PM on a Friday?
Seriously? That’s kind of insane.
I can probably make it, though; I’ll check my schedule as soon as someone bothers to tell me what classes I’m involved in this semester.
If I come, I’ll probably come over to the Triangle in the morning and hang out around there, especially given what a pain it would be to get to and around Raleigh in time for a 6:00 game. I could give rides to those who need them.
MM: Do you still have my e-mail address?

Oh, and for those who don't know
the stadium really is in the middle of freaking nowhere, an impressive feat considering how close it is to Raleigh. It’s much better now that there’s a US 64 bypass between there and Raleigh, but it’s still by no means actually in Raleigh.
Also, Daedelus: it’s midway between the train stations in Raleigh (to the west) and Wilson (to the east). If you could get a ride from Wilson, there are trains that are scheduled to arrive there at 2:20 and 3:30 (only ~4.5 hours on the train), which could probably actually make it there in time for the game.
