Reds.com: Reds invite 11 to big league camp

Mark Sheldon reports that Reds have 11 non-roster invitees to camp this year, including outfielders Laynce Nix and Darnell McDonald, catchers Ryan Jorgensen and Chris "Daddy Mackski" Kroski, infielders Wes Bankston, Kevin Barker and Luis Bolivar, and pitchers Aaron Fultz, Ron Flores, Jeff Kennard and Adam Pettyjohn.  These are all typical roster filler for Spring Training, with only Fultz and Nix as serious candidates for breaking camp with the team.

Notably absent from the invitee list are minor leaguers Drew Stubbs, Chris Valaika, and Todd Frazier.  Anybody have any guess as to why?

My guess

They’re too cheap this year to give invites to players who won’t make the team.

It's Only January 7th

They still have 6 weeks or so to add more. There are still a ton of FA’s out there that might have to resort to minor league deals.

Also, if you look at the Reds.com active roster, the Reds gave Willy Taveras Jr’s # 3

Cherry is not going to be the everyday shortstop

Not according to Walt (via Fay):

Quickly from Walt Jocketty (I’ve got a conference call in four minutes):

—“We didn’t sign Jerry (Hairston) to be our everyday shortstop. We don’t know that Alex Gonzalez can’t play. Reports are he’s progressing well. We won’t know for sure until spring training. But we can’t count him out.”

—“Jerry will play a lot of left field. He gives us flexibility. He’s a very important part of the club.”

—Jocketty said he has talked to the Yankees. The Yankees are reportedly looking to move Nick Swisher or Xavier Nady. “I’ve talked to (GM Brian) Cashman a lot.

—The Reds are still interested in Rocco Baldelli but probably not Ty Wigginton. "We’re going to keep Edwin (Encarnacion). We don’t want to play Wigginton in the outfield.”

—On obtaining the much-talked-about right-hander RBI man: “I’m not turning my back on it. But we may end up going into spring without one. I’m going to try to strength the bench a bit and add an outfielder.”

The problem with Cherry is that he should not be the everyday anything. He’s a fine utility player, but he doesn’t have the bat for LF or the glove for SS.

The Pittsburgh Post Gazette is assuming that it's down to the Pirates and two AL teams for Baldelli

But they’re assuming that because the Reds signed Hairston, they’re no longer interested in Rocco.

MLB Trade Rumors

is reporting that Baldelli is signing with the Red Sox.

If I were Roco I'd stay in the American League

simply because I know they are claiming his leg problems were a misdiagnoses but does anyone know how he is going to bounce back next year? If I were Baldelli I would want the safety net of the DH, which as I type that doesn’t make much sense with Ortiz on the Red Sox.

I like that Jocketty has talked a lot to the Yankees

I REALLY want Nick Swisher. It would be interesting to see what it would take to get him. I could live with Xavier Nady, too, if the Reds don’t give up too much.

Who the fuck's Wes Bankston?

And is anyone else’s mind blown that there is not a single true shortstop in the system besides Zack Cozart (I hear Valaika’s a stretch)?

...because there's already someone posing as Jacob Brumfield

I think he's mocking

Paul Janish’s spelling.

I’d rather see Janish at SS than Hairston. Maybe the kid would actually hit, now that there’s no Ryan Freel to kick him in the face if he succeeds…

by BubbaFan on Jan 7, 2009 10:31 PM EST up reply actions

How much worse could Janish be than Gonzo offensively?

Considering that Gonzo has a career OPS+ of 80, and a career OBP of 295.

"Oedipus ruined a great sex life by asking too many questions!"- Dr. Stephen T. Colbert DFA.

by justin007000 on Jan 7, 2009 10:47 PM EST up reply actions

Janish's OPS in 2008 was .520 in 38 games.

And it was an ugly .520. One bad stretch started when on June 9th, Hairston (our starting SS) got hurt, and Janish entered the game as his replacement. Janish proceeded to start the next 6 games. Over this period of time, he went 1-for-24 (one single). He’s never had an OPS over .711 at any stop since he was in Single-A ball. I think he is a serious offensive liability, and I’d like to see him traded/released so we can spend the development opportunities on prospects who might eventually start for the Reds.
