Welcome back, Cherry!
According to Mark Sheldon:
Free agent Jerry Hairston Jr. is returning to the Reds. A baseball source told MLB.com that Hairston and the club agreed to terms on a one-year contract worth a guaranteed $2 million on Tuesday. It's an incentive laden deal that could be worth up to $4 million.
An announcement is expected on Wednesday. The Royals and Cardinals were the other teams competing for Hairston's services.
It appears that Cincinnati plans to make Hairston its starting shortstop this season because Alex Gonzalez won't be ready.
I don't mind re-signing Hairston, but I don't like him being the starting SS.
And I guess this means they still need an outfielder...

Gonzalez won't be ready?
Ha! Let’s give him a raise!

Ugh
Can they just release Alex Gonzalez? What the heck is wrong with his leg that it’s taken this long to heal?

Marcus Giles
Did you also see that Marcus Giles decided he wanted to play baseball again and signed with the Phillies on a minor league deal? That whole situation is bizarre. Did he need some time off to figure out how to succeed without PEDs?
by Brian B on Jan 6, 2009 11:27 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Or to continue using PEDs without being caught ;-)
Actually, I don’t think it’s that strange. It’s not uncommon for players to retire, then come back after a year or two. They get tired of playing, but find they miss it after they quit.

Speaking of backups shortstops...
The Pittsburgh Pirates offered minor league contracts with spring training invites to former Reds Anderson Machado and Pedro Lopez. They will be vying with Andy Phillips, among others, for a reserve infielder spot.

And Hairston could make 4 mil
if he reaches incentives…..So Hairston, if he has a good season, is worth half as much as one Pat Burrell….that makes sense. Ugh.

My guess
Is that it’s injuries they’re worried about. That’s why the Royals passed. They were afraid Hairston wouldn’t stay healthy. The incentives may be for staying off the DL.

Hey, remember this?

You sound completely full of shit now, Walt.
It appears that Cincinnati plans to make Hairston its starting shortstop this season because Alex Gonzalez won’t be ready.
“Hairston” and “starting” shouldn’t be ever typed in the same sentence. Ever.
Hairston was one of the better players on the Reds last year, but come on. A starting job? At a defensively challenging position? Potentially 4 million dollars? After an outlier year? With all of those injuries? Jockerty, you’ve got some ’splainin to do.
I guess it could be worse. He could have been “the answer” in LF.

How can you complain about a 1 year deal for 2 mil?
I mean come on, we need another SS/util and Cherry was pretty damn decent last year. Outliner yes, but he had to have other offers for more money. Jocketty is sticking to the plan of not handing out long term deals like candy(Krivsky) while filling a short term needs.

hmm- the Reds have a strange way of improving
2 easily correctible situations. Horrid offense in CF. And they sign a player that has a legitimate chance to be worse than Corey Patterson.
Horrid SS defensive. and I will guarantee Hairston will be worse defensively than Keppinger in a year that Kepp broke his knee cap. Hairston for his career comes in -15 runs at SS. Not that many games because apparently only the Reds are crazy enough to play Jerry at SS.
I dont mind Hairston but please keep him in the outfield.

I agree that SS/3B defense needs dramatic improvement
But with whats out on the market Cherry was the best available at SS. This situation needs to be fixed longterm by 2010 but I am OK with Cherry for 1 year.

Furcal was on the market
fuck it, Juan Castro was on the market. Orlando Cabrera would have been better for the same money. And even (gulp) David Eckstein wouldn’t have been the end of the world… and there would have been better defense at SS. The fact that we took a position that we were weak at and further weakened ourselves there makes this not so good of a deal.

move phillips to short. im sure he wants to. im equally sure he can handle it very well. i would much rather see kepp/hairston at 2B that SS. if it takes him some time to adjust, fine. i dont think anyone expects the reds to do anything next year. whatever . . .

Reds.com
has the Hairston signing as its top story. It says Hairston will likely be the #2 hitter, behind Taveras.
And speaking of Taveras…no jersey number yet, but he’s already been Photoshopped into a Reds uniform.
Then there’s this article, about how the Reds may have their eye on Baldelli. Also interesting is the speculation about whether Jocketty is kicking himself for not pursuing Burrell, or if they’re just so cheap they wouldn’t even shell out what Burrell got.

I’m guessing that all deferred payments are considered part of the year that the original payments were supposed to be made. That is to say, since the Reds have been receiving the interest on that money, they are on the hook for the payments.

God, I love sports reporting.
No back-up info about why Seabass will not be ready. No quotes attributing the idea that Hairston will start at short. No info about the incentives. What a bunch of hackery in the name of being first with this little bullshit story.
I didn’t want Hairston back because if he’s healthy, Dusty will start him no matter what. On the bright side, it’s only for one season. On the down side, you mean to tell me that Taveras couldn’t have been signed for one season for much less than he’s guaranteed. This organization changes GMs and owners and still can’t wipe its ass with a roadmap.
On another bright note, I have no faith that this team will compete this year and will look for the bright prospect future. But, if they get no time to cut their teeth this year, how will we be a winner before ’11?

I’ve updated the WAR spreadsheet to add Cherry. I knocked Laynce Nix off the roster and cut 175 plate appearances from Gonzalez. It netted the Reds 0.06 WAR. Chipping away. Slowly chipping away.

Dudes
Fay’s blogpost on Hairston mentions what he did last season batting lead-off and speculates that projects to a 92-70 record!!!!
Hairston is the straw that stirs the Reds Drink! The Dodgers get Manny for that. We get Jerry Hairston.
by timb116 on Jan 7, 2009 12:40 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Ugh
I see things so differently than Fay, it’s not even funny.
He prefers short to the outfield. His range is very good and he was pretty sure-handed.
There is no evidence to either of these points. His UZR at SS last year was -2.6 in 34 games – that’s -16.8 over the course of a season. His .970 fielding percentage was good, but middle of the pack given his playing time.
But, if you play him at short over Jeff Keppinger, you’re starting Chris Dickerson or Norris Hopper over Keppinger. Dickerson had a good 28-game run last year, but I like Keppinger over him or Hopper.
I think the point here is that the Reds have crap available at SS and LF. But seriously, after what Keppinger did last year, why does he get a pass compared to Dickerson or Hopper? Just because he was hurt? And why can’t anybody within the Reds media acknowledge that Keppinger was one of the worst defensive shortstops in the league last year?
As for where Hairston hits, the Reds were consistently good last year only when Hairston hit lead off. They went 25-19 with him hitting first. That punches up to a 92-70 record for the season. Hairston’s on-base was .384 overall and .427 in the leadoff spot. Taveras was .307.
This is a horrendous use of statistics. Terrible. Terrible. Terrible.
By the way, Gonzalez is working out in Miami. He’s able to do baseball activities. The plan is for him to see Dr. Tim Kremchek sometime shortly. The Reds will know much more then.
Really? When was the last time Kremchek successfully diagnosed something? He may be a helluva surgeon, but the guy sucks at figuring out the health of a player.

should Dunn sign for 1 year?
In a state like Ohio . . . the economics are really bad. The Indians may have had the best offseason of anyone [signing reliever Kerry Wood, among others], and they can’t sell tickets. On the front page of the Sunday New York Times, there was a story that 10-12 major Broadway shows are closing down this month, the most ever. And I kind of compare that . . . they’re luxury items the way baseball games have become luxury items, and I think that may be a tell-tale sign about the economy.
(It really is bad on Broadway. About half of all Broadway plays are closing this month.)
So, maybe Adam Dunn should sign a one-year deal and hope for a better economy next year.
One possible fly in the ointment: what if the economy is even worse next year? That is looking increasingly possible, and if it happens, Dunn could be wishing he signed a multi-year deal, even if it’s for less than he thinks he’s worth.

my point is that
if someone like Oakland (purely hypothetical) who appreciates the player’s contribution is willing to give him 3 years, but can only sacrifice $20-24 million to him, wouldn’t that be better than a one-year deal where he has to play through to 2010 at $10M and hopef for the best? Isn’t he already set financially? Why play the market just to maximize your dollar amount? I think people tend to lose perspective on what that kind of money really means.

not necessarily
I’m not opposed to players maximize the money they can get when shopping themselves to teams. I just think people suggesting that he take a one year deal to try to find a better deal next year (and Dunn if he does that) are being sillly, short-sighted, and have totally lost the meaning of that much money. That’s probably true anyway, but acting like this economic downturn really means something to these players (outside of making fewer millions than the millions they already make) is ridiculous to me.
