Rays sign Burrell, Cubs sign Bradley, Reds still working on priority #1
per Rosenthal. the report is for 2 years, $16 mil, which is so far beyond awesome for the Rays that i am beside myself wondering where the hell Walt was on this one. this is exactly, like down to the number, what the Reds needed for LF and it looks like we wont get it. 2 years is perfect, and at 8 mil per Burrell is not quite a steal, but close to it. I hope and pray Walt is on the phone with Burrell's agent right now offering 18 mil. crap.
Update from Slyde: The Cubs have signed Milton Bradley to a 3yr/$30 million deal as well.

It shows how much the market has dropped
Burrell made 14,250,000 last year. He most likey will make 7 Mil this year and 9 Mil next for the Rays.
This is bad news for the other big sluggers still unsigned out there. Look at Adam Dunn. Dunn made 13,000,000 last year. Right now he might be staring at making just half of that in 2009. If I am him, I do a one-year deal for the highest I can find, and hope the economy makes a Huge Rebound in 2009 and try the whole process over again. Maybe a 2-year deal, but don’t look for any big names to sign for more than two years.

A few things to consider
Seems like this would’ve been a great deal for the Reds, but we might not have been able to get him for that price.
If he cares about competing for the next two years, the Rays probably give him a better chance than the Reds. Also, he went to college and University of Miami. Another thing to consider is that Florida has no state income tax. I’m sure we could’ve had burrell for not much more, but who knows.

Blech
I definitely would have been a fan of a deal like that for Burrell. If that sets the market, then we should go after Bradley hard. Risky yes, but mitigated by the 2-year deal we’d offer him.

Good job on the scoop! I am somewhat surprised Bradley got so much more than Burrell given Bradley’s injury/meltdown risk.

If the Reds had signed Burrell
at 3 years, 30 mil, I would have been just fine with that. To think the Rays can get him at 2 years and only 16 mil just makes me sick.
I mean, really, did Burrell’s agent go the Reds and say “Hey we can get 2 years, 16 mil, from the Rays… can you top that?” And did Jocketty say “pass?”
Of course, Burrell may not have wanted to play in Cincy anyway.

I don't think they hate Edwin
Jocketty supposedly considered him untouchable at the deadline last year.
I think Wigginton is the most likely because he’s the only right-handed bat listed there.

I think Wiggy gets signed.
At this point, assuming no Beltre trade happens (which is sadly what will happen), I think Wiggy gets signed, and E5 becomes E7.
If I’m the GM now, and the Beltre trade is out of the question, I sign Wiggy, Baldelli, Jerry Hairston, Mark Prior (if dirt cheap) and Sean Casey. Those 5 would probably have the most upside to the 2009 team out of the remaining position players whom we can afford. And juggling lineups there gets us to…what…80 wins?

Why Casey?
I mean if they decide to go ahead and move Votto to LF, and use Sean as a stopgap for Yonder, I would be all about it. Do a 1B/3B Platoon between Wigginton, Encarnacion, and Casey (1st Only). Then sign one of Hairston or Baldelli, and you are full
1B – Encarnacion/Wiggington
2B – Phillips
SS – Gonzalez
3B – Encarnacion/Wiggington
LF – Votto
CF Taveras Bruce
RF
C – Hernandez
Bench
C- Hanigan
INF- Keppinger
INF – Casey
OF – Dickerson
OF – Hairston or Baldelli
Of course the above is full of ifs. The biggest if is at Short. Does anyone think the Reds might end up making a run at Orlando Cabrera if this trend of short-term deals at reduced rates continues? Just in case Gonzalez isn’t good to go?

the only way they'd go after Cabrera is 2 years or less, $5 million or less
Basically, if he needs to prove something. I don’t see Jocketty spending a lot of money for a safety net.

Slyde, if our best option for LF is going to be signing Hairston, do you think it would make sense to go ahead and move Votto. With whats left, it might be the smarter move, and better use of money.

If the long term plan is to move him there, then yes
That’s what this all depends on. If the Reds aren’t planning for any positional conflict between Alonso and Votto, then they are fools. It doesn’t necessarily mean that they have to make the change now, but I’d rather see Votto take his lumps in 2009 and the Reds hit the ground running with Alonso in 2010, than have 2010 be a question mark year with a rookie 1B and a LF who is new to the position.

I not sure it means anything
but Encarnación has been playing first for the Aguilas down here.
I made it to my first game last week and the whole Aguilas team pretty much stunk- Melky, Andruw Jones, Furcal, and EdE too. A whole lot of rust.
I wanted to do an eyewitness report but my pictures turned out really bad and other then a spectacular diving catch into the third base stands by Licey’s Erick Aybar to end the game, the night was not super exciting.
In limited viewing, EdE looks comfortable at first. I saw him make a diving stab off to his right on TV the other night and flip the ball to Cueto who was covering. Turned out to save a run as Cueto gave up a double on a ball that Jones should have caught in center and then a homer a couple of batters later.
According to the Toros’s homepage Volquez had his first good start last night going 6innings and only giving up a run. He struck out 7 and gave up 5 hits. The run that scored was helped by two wild pitches. The aguilas webpage says he was consistently between 95 and 97 and his slider and curve were on (does the wagon really throw both a slider and a curve?)
I believe Cueto is scheduled to start Wednesday at 7:30pm and it might just be possible to watch it on the internet at www.torosdeleste.com .

Yeah
But IF Bradley can produce as he did last year for just 2 of the 3 years in that contract, its a bargain. It may not be likely to occur, but if it does It’s a solid signing. Now of course he only played in the field 64 games last year, and in his years on the West Coast he was oft-injured. So that is the onle downside to the deal. And oh yeah the fact that some think he is bat-shit crazy too.

Not even last year
If he performs to his projections, he’s still better. The only bad thing about Bradley is his health, but honestly I think that’s going to become a problem for Dunn in the next 2 years too (just a hunch). The worst season Chone projects for Bradley over the next 3 is .282/.391/.482. I’d take a chance that he’ll be a little healthier for that kind of production.

Dunn has been the most consistent HR hitter in baseball
He stays healthly and goes yard. That’s what you get with Dunn. I’d rather have consistent production with easy going personality, then a crazy guy with an injury history with slightly more upside. It’s a gamble.
A bird in hand is worth two in the bush. Bradley has not proven that he can play a full season in the field.

The more I think about it I love the Bradley to Cubs deal.
Look at all this money they have knotted up long-term.
Big Z through 2012 @ ~$18 m/y
Soriano through 2014 @ $18m/y
Ramirez through 2010 @ $15.75 m/y
Lee through 2010 @ $13 m/y
Dempster through 2011 @ $8, $12.5, and $13.5
Lilly through 2010 @ $12 m/y
Fukudome through 2011 @ $11.5, $13, $13.5
Bradley through 2011 @ $10 m/y
Lee is the only guy who is probably not going to be overpaid at some point. Bradley may be this year’s Fukudome!!!!

Way too cheap, brumfield
For a mother joke and all, you need to multiply by 10.
Of course, Brummy, there’s the remote possibility (I repeat remote) that some of us, unlike you, don’t live at home with our mothers. Stop projecting your basement, Cheetos reality on poor Brendanukkah.
I suppose I need to add that I’m just busting chops here and have no beef either way (except to mutter “what the hell” when I read it and then show the offending comment to my mothe… errrr, friend).
On a serious note, why do the Reds always break my heart? Last year’s Prospectus contained a fair bit about Jocketty and examining how he handled the surplus of OF talent he found when he inherited the Cards. The judgment" pretty average. I can see why. This market was perfect for him to ride in and sign someone at a below market, short-term deal and he gives me Willy Taveras. That’s like paying $4 to have ride someone’s mom. Just poor.

Remember when?
The Reds had Wily Mo Pena, Dunn, Kearns, and Casey for three positions. Remember when there was a surplus of talent there (allegedly). Short of turning Pena into Arroyo, the Reds are left three years later with almost nothing (Daryl Thompson, Micah Owings, Dallas Buck). I feel like Caesar, running around my “palace” and screaming “Wayne Krivsky, give me back my legions!”*
- So, that’s what they meant in the 80’s by a liberal arts education enabling you to anything. I’ve long noted “anything” did not mean earn a living…perhaps they were anticipating the internet and blog posts and obscure historical references lost on others?
If so, it was a still a waste of money.

Well to our credit
Look at what Kearns, Casey, and Pena have done since. Just be glad we got something when we did. (Yeah the Kearns deal sucked and we could have gotten much more at the time but hey it looks like we got the better part now with Bray and Thompson.)
Also it’s obvious we wouldn’t have offered Dunn arbitration so the 2 draft picks wouldn’t have happened. (I mean it is silly looking at the deal Burrell just signed for the Reds to not kick the tires on Dunn. 2 years 20 million is a real possibility and it’d be nice to have 40 HRs back in LF. Then let him walk when Votto is ready to move to LF and Yonder is ready to man 1st.)
Also Buck, Thompson, and Owings all have pretty nice ceilings so it’ll be interesting to see what happens with them.
Kearns, Casey, Pena, Dunn or Bray, Thompson, Buck, Castillo, Arroyo, Manuel, and Owings. Looks like a push to me right now and there is the strong chance that we come out more than on top.

I agree with part of this
I never agreed that we had a “surplus of talent” in the outfield. I didn’t think we had too many outfielders when we traded Kearns. I also didn’t think it when we traded Josh Hamilton. These deals were defensible to varying degrees, but here we are 1 year later in Hamilton’s case, 2 years later in Kearn’s case, and he have Noriis Hopper as our starting left fielder. Now Kearns hasn’t set the world on fire since he left, but if we had such a surplus of outfielders how do we have 2 guys for 3 spots now?
On the other hand I agree with BigRedMechanic that we got a decent haul for these guys. I wouldn’t call it “nothing”. The Dunn deal would become a steal if we would just turn around and sign him again. We’d get The Micah Owings Pu Pu Platter, and get to dump a couple million in salary for half a season of Dunn. Sadly this seems very unlikely to me.

It would be wonderful
If they would re-sign him, mainly so I could go to GAP everyday to wait to see which of those clowns would jump out of the radio booth first (I’m hoping it would be Marty, because that redneck Brantley is son terrible Marty’s indulgence has to be the ONLY reason he is employed).
Sadly for me and the Reds, the highlight of my Reds fandom since the 2000 trade for Griffey (after all, the 2000 me didn’t know they didn’t have any intention of neglecting pitching for a decade!) was last year when Jeff Brantley was on TV with Marty Junior (how insufferable is Brantley? He makes Thom look reasonable) and Brantley called on EE to bunt with the Reds down by 2 with none out. I just kept getting angrier at Brantley’s stupidity! Bunting with no one out, a power hitter at the plate and the tying run at first!?!!? EE proceeded to look terrible in a bunt attempt and then took another strike.
With two strikes Brantley insisted EE should bunt! I was near apoplectic. Even Thom disagreed and Brantley said EE should not be allowed to swing the bat, because “he is just not clutch.” Leaving aside the obvious fact that there is no such skill as “clutch, " where he get that idea in his two short years? It comes form the North Carolina hick, I’m betting. Anyway, as EE’s walk-off homer landed in left field, I ran around screaming "take that mfer” and my poor wife just shook her head at the silly things men like.
Re-signing Dunn would encourage me to do the same thing the moment it is announced.

was added to the Yankees roster today. Which meant someone had to get the boot. That someone was David Shelley Duncan, son of Dave Duncan, the Cards’ pitching coach.
![]()
Shelley Duncan is a right-handed corner OFer/first baseman. This will be his age 29 season. My impression of him is that he could have pretty good power, but his defense is nothing to write home about. Might be worth a look. Though given his family connections, the Cards may grab him.

Beltre watch
Beltre’s left shoulder and thumb have recovered from season-ending surgeries,
and he is already hitting, fielding and throwing more than a month before spring
training, the Tacoma News-Tribune reports.
ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: That’s good news as there was some question whether Beltre
would be ready for spring training. Beltre might play in the WBC, which would
provide a good test for his shoulder and thumb. Beltre, who is in the last
year of his contract, also said he is unhappy the team “went young” in its
offseason rebuilding plans. Make of that what you will.
I REALLY wanna know what the price is, and if Jocko has his eyes open to trading for the best remaining viable lineup acquisition for the 2009 Reds.

From the Fey:
Is there any interest in outfielder Andruw Jones, who (sic) the Los Angeles Dodgers are expected to release or trade? “It’s something we’ve discussed. We’re trying to get someone down to see him play (in Winter Ball). We’ve got to get some more information. We’ve had no discussions with the Dodgers.”
It seems Jocko is so disinterested in Andrew that he wasn’t even aware that Andrew has quit his Dominican team already. That’s a good thing, cuz the DWL reports on him were not complimentary.

Swisher seems like a possibility now
So I’m sure we’ll get Nady instead.

This is Rotowire's take on The BoSox signing Baldelli:
Baldelli will sign a contract with the Red Sox in the next few days, ESPN and
FoxSports.com report.
ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He’ll serve as a fourth outfielder and could get significant
playing time when J.D. Drew goes down with his usual injury.
That’s a shockingly fair assessment.

Yep, they signed him.
Financial terms of the deal for the Rhode Island native and former Tampa Bay first-round pick were not disclosed, although the Boston Herald indicated that it would include a low guaranteed salary with a large number of performance bonuses.
That’s exactly the kind of contract I would have liked to see the Reds offer him. But hey, maybe he just really wanted to play for Boston…
We want to build long period of time. I didn’t come here for the shot run.
