Trivia Question... please try without cheating

I just happened to look this up and wanted to share it. I don't remember hearing about this as a topic during the season, so I think it's a legitimate piece of trivia. Please try to answer this question without looking it up, because it's easy to look it up and spoil it if you want to.

Here we go:

How many times did Jay Bruce bat cleanup for the Reds in 2008?

Zero

is my guess. With Griffey hitting 3rd most of the year, Jay couldn’t hit 4th… Both are lefties! By the time Griffey was gone, Jay had cooled down and BP was hitting 4th still I bet.

Darn, I was wrong

I looked it up. I won’t ruin others guesses though.

I'm guessing three

and I’m too tired to look it up, but I’m sure it has to be on the low end

I remember an especially bad lineup where he batted fourth and Votto batted 3rd

not that I remember every lineup, but this one sticks out for me. And since a question like this isn’t interesting unless it’s a unique number, I too will say once.

I just checked out his splits

He actually was pretty miserable as a cleanup hitter. His best position in the lineup? 9th.

by Brendanukkah on Jan 21, 2009 12:48 PM EST reply actions

the problem is

do you look at his production in the 9-hole and always bat him there or do you hit him 4th because “he’s due”? It’s hard to be a big league manager, with all these decisions and philosophies.

I think that means

that no matter how good the goat book was, he eventually did get off his ass and leave the room.

the answer

is here, if you haven’t already looked it up. Scroll down to “Batting order positions.” Brendan’s right… he was a horrible 4-hole hitter.
