Who's 2007 numbers are these:
29 HR with .277/..327/.481
I'll give you a hint, hit posted a 874 OPS with the Reds in 2007 with 57 ABs.
If you said Jorge Cantu you were right.
Hindsight being 20/20, this was a horrible move when Krivsky released him and it is even worse today. Look at the guys on the roster Krivsky placed in front of Cantu.
Hatteburg (DFA), Sergio the horrible (rule V), Stanton, and Valentin
If Cantu would have been in a Reds uni last year he could have platooned with Votto or could have just been a bench guy. Hell you probably could have got creative and put BP at SS and Cantu a 2B. After the Griffey trade this would have kept Bruce in CF and put EE or Votto in LF. Then after the Dunn trade you move C-Dick to CF, Bruce to RF, Votto to LF, EE to 1B, and Cantu to 3B. All awhile we are preventing Patterson from getting ABs.
Krivsky said at the time "it was a baseball desicion" which means money, yet he shelled out 3 million for Patterson in ST. Cantu just signed for 3.5 million for 2009 with the Marlins. In 2008 Fangraphs had Cantu's worth at 12.4 million. And guess what folks we would have been under our control for another few years.
Something tells me Walt is never going to give a talent like Cantu away for nothing. And he sure as hell isn't going to do it to make room for a horrible Rule V pick.
I feel much better with Walt putting together the roster this year.
