UK's Jodie Meeks goes for 54 versus Vols
The Lousiville game never happened...........
Please, allow me to Cat-jack this weblog.
Kentucky's Jodie Meeks just went 10-15 from 3PT, 16-16 from the line, and scored 54 pts against conference rival Tennessee, scoring 26 in the first half and actually improving to 28 in the second, besting Dan Issel- DAN ISSEL- for most points in a single game in Kentucky history.
I can't believe I just saw that! Now you know why my name is BLUE!

is reason #1 why I chose to be a Cardinal fan when I moved from Cincy to Louisville @ age 10.
Dr. Dunkenstein is reason #2.
Jim Masters hitting the jumper to send the Dream Game to OT— and a Cardinal romp— was about as sweet as it gets.
And I don’t think Edgar Sosa has hit a three since the KY game— and I don’t even care!
Have to admit, though, I grew to really like the way the ‘Cats played the game post-NCAA probation. Pitino’s Press reminded me of vintage Denny Crum defenses. Tubby kept the basic spirit alive. Good to see Lexington start to come back and help lift the Ohio River valley into basketball pre-eminence. Tobacco Road can eat my shorts!
Whether you like it or not, history is on our side. We will bury you.

BLUE!!!!
I’m so glad you came over here and started this thread! I’ve missed our UK conversations this season!
That said, I am absolutely giddy today. 54 Points in a college game! That’s just unbelievable! He was on fire in a way I’ve seldom seen outside of a video game! Plus they went on the road and beat Tennessee by 18!
You know what else was awesome? Watching the game while on the phone with a Louisville fan (JCH). Even he had to admit that it was a blast to watch!

along those lines:
I was getting lunch at this run down grocery store/deli in Lexington on the day that Billy Gillispie was hired. This one old dude was getting very excited talking to the guy behind the counter and said “This is payback for when they took our football coach!”

how many does the big ten have? One by one school
Big 12? One by one school
Pac 10? 0 by 0 schools
Big East? 2 by two schools
ACC: 3 by 3 schools.

you know
this is what gets me.
im going to preface here by saying i always enjoy non-Reds sports talk ‘round here, and your CatJacks are no exception. my quibble is of a more general nature and not directed at you, though your comment here is the one getting reply’d. dont take it personal.
but man, i hate stupid SEC fans and their myopic ignorance (did i preface enough for this opening? am i coming out too strong? oh well, no turning back now). the Big 10 has had a few down years in football, and all i hear is jive. im willing to take the jive, because, well, the Big 10 (and OSU in particular, to a certain degree) deserves it. but the Big 10 has sent more teams to BCS bowls than any other conference, even through this downturn. im willing to admit that perhaps some of these bowl births are undeserved, but that’s a grey area. OSU has been to three title games in the last 8 years or so. sure they were humiliated in two of them, but just getting there is still something to be respected.
then the table is turned and the SEC has a down year in basketball, and i get “it wont be long before they have some top teams again”. i wholeheartedly agree with this statement about SEC basketball, but why can you never say the same about Big 10 football? its like you understand that conference strength is cyclical only when it is convenient for you to believe so.
of course, Big 10 fans (and any fan of sports to any degree) can be guilty of this myopic ignorance. its just that it has been a recurring theme among SEC fans of late because of the dominance of LSU and Florida, and to a lesser extent Georgia and Alabama and so on in football. this really isnt important at all, and honestly it doesnt affect me as much as i might be letting on here. but its been irking me for a while. the whole “respect my team” locker room bullshit is totally juvenile, and i really debated posting this at all. oh well. i trust it wont blow up on me. hopefully.

football and basketball are hard to compare
because basketball has more games and a tournament. There is a more reasonable understanding of who the best teams actually are.
I’m sure the Big 10 will be good at football again. It’s just that it’s been a long time since anyone but OSU was any good. It will take a total philosophy shift of many of the Big 10 programs to bring them back to prominence.
However, with SEC Basketball, you have the style, coaching, and recruiting in place to see that there are three or four teams that are going to be very very good in the near future.

agreed
thanks ’tHan. i really wavered on posting it at all in fear that it would start something i didnt want to finish, but my faith in you was well-placed. i really appreciate your cromulence.
but now back to tearing back into you. i disagree that OSU has been the only team that has been any good. Michigan has been a in the top 25 for years and Penn State, Iowa, and Wisconsin have seen years of great success. Purdue and Illinois have done this as well, to a lesser extent. the conference hasnt been as strong top-to-bottom as the SEC, but it aint the Big Sky neither.
i do agree regarding philosophy, to some extent. the recruiting has always been there in the Big 10, with West Penn, Ohio, and Michigan being some of the most successful areas in the country for high school football. but its true that “3 yards in a cloud of dust” is completely antiquated. maybe if they played the BCS title game at the Big House we’d see a different outcome, but if all the top bowls are going to be played on the fast tracks of the South and West Coast then they need to change accordingly.

Did someone rag on Big Ten football here recently?
I love SEC football and I think at the moment it’s a more exciting brand of football, though perhaps that’s only because I have more of a connection to it.
I’m not sure if the college football landscape is necessarily cyclical, but it is certainly mutable.
I understand the frustration of Big Ten enthusiasts, but I don’t think SEC fans are any more myopic than college football fans in general. The SEC has two things going for it at the moment that make it sure to annoy fans of other teams/conferences:
1) The SEC is really good right now (though I think it’s heading for a trough)
2) College football is by far the most popular sport regionally in the Southeast. It doesn’t really contend with the NFL. Therefore, it takes up more of the focus of the fans of SEC teams.

not here specifically
as i said, its more a general thing. although i have noticed it here a bit, but certainly not enough to evoke a reaction as scathing as mine. im reacting to the more general tone of the public discourse at large. punching the shadows.
and i pretty much agree on all points. as i said, “Big 10 fans (and any fan of sports to any degree) can be guilty of this myopic ignorance.” but as you point out, the SEC is really good now, and so all the “Scoreboard” chest-thumping is coming from that corner. i guess im frustrated at a certain sense of invincibility exhibited by so many SEC fans. i get the sense that some think they are the best, always have been, always will be. it’s probably a straw man, but it’s the sense i get nonetheless.

College Football is 99% recruiting
the teams that have the most talent win consistently. The Big Ten has a considerable recruiting problem in terms of demography and geography. The weather is a big disadvantage. Not necessarily because the weather is really that terrible, but because recruiters at southern schools play it up to recruits.
Players in the south can play football outdoors 12 months of the year and they also tend to stay close to home. If they go a long way to play football; it’s more than likely to a similarly temperate place.

I guess if by Southeast you mean, some region excluding NC, sure. But, uhhh, around here, ACC basketball is everything, and football is something of an afterthought.

Even including North Carolina and Kentucky
I would bet as a region the Southeast skews widely to college football. And college football and college basketball don’t really compete for attention.
Obviously, college basketball is tops in pockets, but even in North Carolina you’ll hear as much talk about SEC football (USC in the south of the state and Tennessee in the mountains).

Since I'm avoiding work, but still kind of lazy...
I totaled up Final Four teams from each league every year since my birth. The second column is the number of ACC FF teams; the third is SEC teams. I counted current teams here, though that only affects Arkansas in the SEC (they made it in 1990, before joining the SEC in 1991).
2008 1 0
2007 0 1
2006 0 2
2005 1 0
2004 2 0
2003 0 0
2002 1 0
2001 2 0
2000 1 1
1999 1 0
1998 1 1
1997 1 1
1996 0 2
1995 1 1
1994 1 2
1993 1 1
1992 1 0
1991 2 0
1990 2 1
1989 1 0
1988 1 0
1987 0 0
1986 1 1
1985 0 0
1984 1 1
1983 1 1
1982 1 0
I overstated a bit, but my point remains. While the SEC has usually—though not always by any means—been able to compete with the ACC, the ACC has consistently placed more teams in the Final Four, which I think is indicative of the significantly higher quality of its teams over the years. The SEC placed more teams in the Final Four in only 4 of the 27 years, while the ACC had more in 12 of the 27 years. Sure, this is an imperfect measure, but I suspect that looking at other actual results would give a similar impression.

that's still kinda skewed
The ACC has had two consistent top teams in Carolina and Duke
In that period the SEC has only had Kentucky in that position. Arkansas and Florida have flirted with greatness but haven’t reached a consistent level.
All that shows is that the ACC has Two Kentuckys

Well, okay.
It’s skewed because the ACC has better teams? Uhhh, sure.
In that time, the ACC had six teams make it to the final four: UNC, Duke, Maryland, Georgia Tech, Virginia, NC State. Virginia and NC State only made it once, while the other four went at least twice. The SEC also had six teams make it: Kentucky, LSU, Florida, Arkansas, Georgia, Miss. St.; Georgia and MSU only made it once, and Arkansas has only made it once since joining the SEC. Of course, the SEC had ten teams until 1991, then 12 teams, while the ACC only had 8 until 1991, then 9 until 2004-2005, when it expanded to 12. Which makes the point that the ACC was a much better basketball conference before it expanded beyond 8 teams…

Since I don't want to look up a lot of stuff, just to say that the SEC and ACC are close in terms of basketball quality
I’m going to pick out something I know is wrong and run with it.
Arkansas was in the final four in 1994 and 1995.

Yep, you're right.
I stand corrected on that. Everything else I said is correct, though. :-)

No because you said
that the SEC can’t often contend with the ACC in basketball, which you’ve shown to be incorrect.
Even if I concede that the ACC has been a better conference for that period of time, it is very clear that they have been close to each other in terms of quality.

I was having this discussion about the Big East the other night...
and the Big East this year is basically the ACC with the top teams not quite as good, a couple of middle teams slightly better and three crappy teams tacked on at the bottom.

I agree the bottom of the conference is pretty bad
But nine ranked teams speaks for itself.

several of those ranked teams aren't all that great
they don’t look like top 25 material to me. it must be a down year.
I thought Louisville played way over their heads against Kentucky. Otherwise they’ve not looked good to me. I thought the same thing about Villanova and Notre Dame. I realize that Louisville defeated both of those teams within the last week, but I can assure you that I thought those teams looked pretty poor to begin with.

A biased view to be sure
Louisville’s strength is simple and it showed against ND – depth. ND ran out of gas, plain and simple.
Louisville also showcased their greatest flaw in that game – their inability to put an opponent away. They should have beaten both UK and ND by 15+ points but couldn’t stomp them when they had them down. It’s easily my biggest worry with this year’s team.
UK should be ranked this week and if the kids mature they might even make the sweet sixteen, which would be good for them this year.
Louisville didn’t play over their heads against UK. Both teams played great basketball, and it was a great game. But make no mistake, Louisville is easily the better team. I have yet to see them play well for more than about 5-6 minutes at a time. That also scares the hell out of me.

I just disagree
they shot 55% from 3 PT comared to 30-35% the rest of the season, and has a similar ridiculous disparity with free throws. I realize they had a few open shots, but not that many.
Given that, plus the fact that they needed a buzzer beater to win at Freedom Hall, I don’t think its clear that Louisville is “easily” the better team.
I think their greatest flaw is that they don’t play as a team. It seems like a bunch of guys trying to go one-on-one. That’s been their flaw since they last went to the Final Four.

Mistakes lead to the close game
You are acting like it was a close game, as I recall we just screwed up the last 30 seconds.

They were up 11 with 8:00 or so to go
And up 6 with 30 seconds to go, with the ball. Earl Clark failed epically at the end, the game never should have come down to Good Edgar saving the day.

your retarded
If Louisville had any kind of killer instinct they would have put UK away at the 8:00 mark. Instead they let them hang around and nearly paid the price.
Also, tell me how many situations where a team has come back from six down when the other team has the ball. Not too damned many, I’m willing to guess.

so what you are saying is
louisville isn’t that good. the fact is kentucky was tied with 8 seconds to go. it doesn’t matter how it happened, it happened.
if louisville was that much better, they would have uk away

Nope
As I stated here, L’Ville’s problem is that they don’t seem willing to put teams away when they have the chance. Doesn’t mean they’re not a good team. So, in conclusion…..YOUR FACE.

in conclusion you don't make sense
they aren’t willing to put teams away? how generous of them.
If they can’t play like a good team for more than a couple of stretches per game, then maybe they aren’t that good yet. I agree that if they can find some consistency they are a top three team in the country, but you shouldn’t dismiss UK’s performance at Freedom Hall.

I will say
this UL team is extremely talented, they just play really really dumb sometimes.
It took epic stupidity to make that game close, foul on the 3 pointer, and 3 turnovers in the final 30 seconds.
It’s not like collapsed to UK’s epic defense, we just kept fiddle fucking around and fubbled away our lead.

I'll grant that they were close in the mid 90s
But since Kentucky’s last FF in 1998, there have been a grand total of four SEC FF appearances. In that time, three different ACC teams have won national championships, another has made it to the national championship game, and ACC teams have made 9 FF appearances.

Fifty percent of the SEC’s final four teams won the title. only 33% of ACC teams did.

I don't really know where to join in the discussion about conferences
I don’t really think of the SEC as being a top tier basketball conference. That is the ACC and the Big East. But, the SEC is still generally pretty solid. A few years it will be great, and few below average, but usually a tier below the ACC and Big East.
I think most of the Big Ten criticism in football has to do with Ohio St. winning the conference and being blown out in consecutive championship games against SEC opponents. This year didn’t help, with Penn St.’s performance as conference champion.
