What about Michael Young???
Okay, I just read that Young wants out of Texas because they want him to move to 3b. We obviously are still interested in a SS and Young has been an All-Star player for awhile. Is he a good fit for us and would we be willing to put together a package of young prospects to get him?
What do you guys think? He won a GG this year and is good offensively.
Just looking for thoughts.

His gold glove was debatable
His was -4 runs on defense, according to UZR, so he’s not really a wizard defensively. That being said, he’d still be an upgrade on defense, at least over Keppinger.
Offensively, he’s good, but again, not a world-beater. He’d be a solid addition to the lineup and would probably be battling BP and Edwin to be the best RHB on the team, though I expect Edwin to push beyond the other two this season.
The problem is that he makes $16M annually for the next 5 years, so he’d be the highest paid player on the team over that span, easily. Given that he’s 32 and plays a prime defensive position, I don’t think his prospects of being viable at that spot over the long term are that good.
With the cost it will take to get him, plus what they’ll have to pay him, I don’t think he’s a very good option for the Reds.

His defense
is way, way overrated. Jeter-esque. And, if the team is not pulling the trigger on older guys at the expense of prospects, there is no real fit here. He would want to play short, and he is no longer suited for the position. Pass.

one quibble
I’d argue that he’s better suited for the position now than he was 3 years ago. He was dreadful at SS when he first started playing there. Now he is merely awful. Progress!

If a statement like that doesn't qualify him to be a Red, I don't know what does.

would his offense
in GABP offset his defense? How does he stack up against statistically defensively against Kepp, and Agon?

for a right-handed hitter
there isn’t a lot of difference between Arlington’s and Cincinnati’s ballparks. He’d probably see a little more power, but not so much that it’d turn him into ARod, or even JRoll.

Unless Texas kicks in $25 million
over the length of the contract, I can’t see Young as an option. Even then, the Rangers would require a bunch of talent in return. EdE, Stubbs and Homer would probably be in the discussion to start.

today's market?
we send dorn and thompson and they eat 50 mil. They have p’s up the pipe. Young at 3rd is very average short makes him elite. That contract would suck for a 3rd baseman with no upside and modest power

I have to agree
The package would have to be centered around EdE. It would give them the 3B that we’d be taking with Young, but I don’t think that would be enough. You’re right, we’d have to throw in Homer probably as well. But what if we added another prospect and they gave us Salty too? Would they do Young/Salty/Young’s contract for EdE/Bailey/prospect?

Surely the Reds could do better
with EdE/Bailey than get Michael Young. What a waste of a trading chips that would be.

I don't know if they're really that serious about trading him
If they were, why deflate his value by publicly announcing that you don’t think he’s good enough to stick at SS? In the end I think Young will realize he’s untradeable simply because his contract is so expensive of what’s being done this winter. He’ll fall in line.

probably not happening
Young is an option, but his contract is worth 62 mil over 5 years in present value. If we were to make a trade for him, Texas would have to eat a heck of a lot of that salary for us to even think about it. However, I dont think that we would have to give up as much as Thundering Turtle suggested. I could see them taking a package of some mid level prospects with upside, nothing that would set back our minor league system. Maybe Eric Eymann, Mike Griffin, and Sam Lecure for Young? Those three are all promising prospects, with Eymann and Griffin the odd men out of the logjam we have at 3b and outfield respectively. If Texas is willing to eat 30 mil on his contract. and they would accept a package like that, I would do it. Otherwise, forget about it.
By the way, his defense is slightly above average, not gold glove material, but hey, we are desprite for even an average glove at short.

where have you seen his defense as slightly above average?
The best I’ve ever seen for him is a couple of runs below average.

I dont see nearly enough of him
Don’t get to watch the Texas games often, but being that he won a gold glove this year, and his fielding percentage (.984) was pretty solid, I figured he was slightly above average. I don’t think he has much range, which is probably his downfall. I didnt read where you said he was -4 runs on defense, weird considering he won the GG.

eh
It’s not that weird. Derek Jeter has 3 gold gloves despite the fact that he is generally considered one of the worst defenders at shortstop based on the numbers.
From what I’ve heard, Young is pretty good at turning the double play but is terrible at going to his left. Maybe that wouldn’t be so bad with BP covering to his left, but that’s a lot to ask of Phillips.

Article on fangraphs talks about Young
http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/the-young-dilemma
Mostly it says the same stuff Slyde and others have said – Young’s awful defensively, and getting worse, and generally is not worth the money when he’s good for 2-3 wins.

I’m making fun of people who get pissed off about the vote as much as I am making fun of you. The whole thing is silly. You don’t like a vote, don’t participate. If you want to vote on something, go for it. This isn’t a democracy. Votes don’t mean anything anyway.

Ya know
Everyone was all over the Rangers (and Scott Boras) for the ARod deal. It could be argued, though, that ARod actually earned the money while in Texas. But it’s signings like Young and Chan Ho Park (5/$65M) that are the dumb ones.
As Charlie Finley used to say, it’s not the price of star talent that’s outrageous but the price of mediocrity.
