Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

2009 REDS OFFSEASON OVERVIEW, including minors!

Hey Guys, My name is Joe and I'm a huge Reds Enthusiast. I just spent all day writing up this 2009 Overview of the Reds franchise. It includes a number of things such as the reds needs, possible free agents for us to sign, possible players to target in trades, untouchables list, and my ideas of what the Reds should do. Lastly, I have projected the starting lineup, rotation, and bullpen of the Reds as well as their AAA, and AA teams. I also listed all notable lower level players, and my personal top 30 Reds prospects ranking. This should give you a great idea of what type of talent we have coming up.  Hope you guys enjoy!

ALL I ASK IS THAT U  PLEASE ADD YOUR THOUGHTS, IDEAS, & SUGGESTIONS!

-------------------------------------------REDS NEEDS-----------------------------------------------------

_________________________________________________________________

LF --> Preferably Right-handed Power Hitter

SS --> Good Defense, preferably young, or cheap veteran stopgap

PH --> Power bats off bench

SP --> Possibly some slight interest in a 5th starter, preferably LHP

_________________________________________________________________

-----------------------------------POSSIBLE FREE AGENTS--------------------------------------------

_________________________________________________________________

(age, 2008 salary, and important stats included)

NOTE: I only included the free agents that we can afford and that will fill a need.  Guys like Sheets, Lowe, and Manny are great, but will NEVER happen.  In reality, if Jocketty winds up signing anyone, it will most likely be from this list. And for the record, Jocketty has already said he is not pursuing Wigginton.

-First basemen- (personally like both options)
Sean Casey (34) * 800k .322 avg .381 obp 199 ab
Doug Mientkiewicz (35) * 750k .277 2 hr 30 rbi 285 ab .374 obp

-Shortstops- (like eckstein, dislike cabrera due to price, age, and loss of draft pick)

 David Eckstein (34) * 4.5 mil .265 324 ab, career .351 obp (much cheaper now)                                                             Orlando Cabrera (34) - Type A * 10 mil .281 8 hr 57 rbi 19 sb 661 ab

-Right Handed Outfielders- (Big on kapler, like a flier on podsednik, gomes is last resort)

Gabe Kapler (33) * 800K .301 8 hr 38 rbi 229 ab
Scott Podsednik (33) * 750k .253 12 sb 162 ab
Jonny Gomes (28) * 1.275 mil .182 8 hr 21 rbi 154 ab

-Left Handed OF's-  (Dunn and Abreu are not Likely to happen, Love Hinske though)

Eric Hinske (31) * 800k .247 20 hr 60 rbi 381 ab
Bobby Abreu (35) <--Jocketty, "He's still looking for a big contract," and thus, Jocketty says he's "not sure he's a fit."
Adam Dunn (29) <-- Highly Improbable they sign him, too expensive, Goes against Jocketty's plan of a strong defense.

-Starting Pitchers- (i'm 99% sure jocketty won't sign any impact SP, we have plenty)

Oliver Perez (27) *  6.5 mil 10-7 4.22 era 194 ip 180 k 105 bb's (looking for big $$)
Randy Wolf (32) type B * 4.75 mil 12-12 4.30 era 190 ip 162 k 71 bb (injury prone)
Jon Garland (29) *12 mil 14-8 4.90 era 196 ip 90 k 59 bb (could be had cheaper)

_________________________________________________________________

------------------------------POSSIBLE PLAYERS TO TRADE FOR----------------------------------

_________________________________________________________________

Xavier Nady (30)   Yanks are shopping him. Only problem is his 1 year contract.

Lastings Milledge (24)   Nats are shopping him, and he fits the mold of young, fast, and powerful.

Alex Rios (27)   Toronto is struggling with payroll and may look to rebuild with the AL east being so strong right now. Trading him for prospects would shed about 5 mil this year and 10 mil next year

Nick Swisher (28)   Powerful bat, high obp, awful average. Adam Dunn - 15 homers and better defense. Locked up for 3 years however.

Jermaine Dye (35)   Best overall hitter among the group, but his age and balky knees are major cause for concern. The sox will have to eat a major portion of his 09' pay in order for this to work

Jonathan Sanchez (25) Crazy stuff, young kid, need the lefty in our rotation bad. Only downfall is his tendancy to be wild.  Edwin Encarnacion would likely be the target of SF if we are going to acquire Sanchez.

Mike Young (32) He is requesting a trade out of Texas... plays gold glove defense and will hit around .300 year in and year out. Would be helpful out of the two hole as long as we don't have to give up much. He's getting up there in age though.

 ----------------------------------TRANSACTIONS I WOULD DO--------------------------------------

_________________________________________________________________

Sign Hinske <-- backs up 1B, 3B, OF + brings 20 HR pop (2 yr. 2.50 mil)

Sign Podsednik to minor league deal for 500K (could add to the idea of the Runnin' Reds)

Trade for one of Milledge, Nady, Swisher... I wouldn't mind if we had to give up one of our top 10 prospects as long as they are not on the untouchables list, as well as some mid to low level guys in a package

(added)

JUST CAME UP WITH A CRAZY IDEA...

How about a crazy 3 way deal between the Reds, Yanks, and Nationals, where the Yankees get Homer Bailey and Dan Dorn the Reds get Lastings Milledge and Esmailyn Gonzalez, and the Nationals get Xavier Nady and Mark Melancon?

The Yankees add another SP option in Bailey and it also gives them another trade piece they could use to acquire Holliday at the deadline. Dorn gives them a powerful LF whose close to ML ready, and will step in when Matsui and Damon become free agents/too old to play.

The Reds get a young stud in Milledge who would legitimize their lineup, and could be a 25-25 type player if he continues to develop. Also, by adding Gonzalez, its gives the Reds the SS prospect they are in dire need of.

The Nationals would get Nady, who is the stable, consistent OF that they've been looking for (they've inquired on Nady already).  Also, they would be receiving a GREAT arm in Melancon who projects as a nice closer... something they lack.

Let me know what you guys think?

----------------------------------------NOTABLE PLAYERS for A+-------------------------------------

_________________________________________________________________

Devin Mesoraco C (catcher of the future, however he's yet to live up to the hype)

Zach Cozart SS ( nice little SS with some pop)

Neftali Soto 3B (Ranked Reds #2 prospect by Redreporter.com)

Kyle Lotzkar RHP (Top SP Prospect with bigggg upside)

Jeremy Horst LHP (STUD in the making, and he has the #'s to back it up, can't wait to see him in AA later in the year)

Joe Krebs LHP (solid lefty reliever that enjoyed a nice 08' season)

Philippe Valiquette LHP  (21 years old, Drafted as a 17 year old, experienced for his age, features fastball 92-95 MPH range as a lefty which makes for a nice MRP)

Miseal Dejesus RHP (impressed at Sarasota last year, 110 K's in 99 innings, with 3.64 era... pitched in 36 G with 12 starts. Watch out for him)

_________________________________________________________________

----------------------------NOTABLE PLAYERS SINGLE A or LOWER-----------------------------

_________________________________________________________________

Juan Duran OF (17 years old, we could have something special, only time will tell)

Yorman Rodriguez OF (16 years old, .268 average in winter league, impressive)

Alex Buchholz 2B-SS  (hit .396 in first 134 minor league at bats last year with a track record of high averages in college)

Juan Carlos Sulbaran RHP  (18 years old, throws 89-92 MPH with good movement. Should start 09' with in either the GCL or Billings)

Evan Hildenbrandt RHSP (19 Yrs old, throws in the low 90's with a nasty curveball and change. Was dominant in GCL, as he put up a  2.67 ERA and struck out  nearly 1/4 of the batters he faced. Should start in A, but i LIKE this kid)

_________________________________________________________________

-------------------------------BRUZ'S TOP 30 REDS PROSPECTS----------------------------------

_________________________________________________________________

1. Yonder Alonso 1B(Unbelievable patience at the plate bodes well and he should move through the system fast.  Will be 30-100 for years to come.)

2. Todd Frazier SS(Born to play; great instincts. Brings average, power, and speed. Projects as 3b or corner outfielder. Most polished prospect we have.)

3. Neftali Soto 3B(Unbelievably well-rounded hitter, he brings high average and tons of pop.)

4. Juan Francisco 3B(Tearing up the winter league, Enough power to hit 40 in the majors. Period)

5. Chris Valaika 2B/SS(major league ready bat, does not have the range for SS, better suited as a 2B)

6. Drew Stubbs CF(burner on the bases, power will develop with time, possible 20-20 threat for years to come)

7. Kyle Lotzkar SP(Rediculous K rate, and stuff, needs to work on command will be a #1 SP in the future... also an injury concern)

8. Chris Dickerson OF(great glove, speed, power, just needs to hit for more contact)

9. Ramon Ramirez SP(good command of slightly above average stuff, could start year as 5th starter this year for Reds, but could someday be a very good #3 SP)

10. Daryl Thompson SP(the stuffs always been there, if he stays healthy he has the upside of a #3 SP)

11. Dan Dorn LF (Kid has just continued to rake at every level, 20 homerun power with a rock solid average, will be in AAA soon)

12. Devin Mesoraco C (rough 08' pushed him down the charts about 5 spots, byt catchers usually develop slow, so he's still on track)

13. Josh Roenicke RP(rediculously strong arm, needs polish though)

14. Zach Stewart RP(has electric stuff but command issues are problem, could be good major league MRP by next year)

15. Jeremy Horst SP(STATS-Class A Dayton: 8-2, 2.38 ERA, 110 K, 33 BB, 102 IP, 36 G, 10 GS) ** In the 10 games he started at the end of the year, check out his stats: 5-0, 1.82 ERA 49.1 IP, 39 H, 10 ER, 10 BB, 51 K's ** WOW

16. Juan Duran OF(only 17 yrs. old and stands 6'6 190 lbs., drawing Dave Winfield comparisons from scouts)

17. Yorman Rodriguez OF(hit .268 as a 16 year old in 09' winter league, has been compared to Eric Davis)

18. Carlos Fisher RP(Throws gas, converted position player, ground ball machine who should work out well in GABP)

19. Zach Cozart SS(hits for a decent average (.280), but with some nice pop, hit 14 hr in 418 ab at class A in 08'... SLICK fielding may be his best asset)

20. Robert Manuel RP(Best control you'll see, 89-93 MPH fastball is maddux like, movement is rediculous and he provides the K's)

21. Pedro Viola RP(mid 90's fastball as a lefty, plus change and slider, the numbers should improve if his stuff stays so nasty)

22. Chris Heisey OF(absolute burner, who is good in the OF,and hits his fair share. 65 steals in the minors in 78 attempts (83%))

23. Matt Maloney SP(soft thrower 87-90, pinpoint accuracy, decent K's, but is flyball pitcher, might have problem in GABP)

24. Alex Buchholz 2B(amazing contact hitter, hit a combined .383/.433/.704  with 29 HR and 43 doubles in his first two season at Deleware. After coming back from an injury last year, hit .396/.471/.604 at Billings... still young but KEEP AN EYE ON HIM)

25. Dallas Buck SP(Good pitcher, but lacks the tools, threw 92 before surgery, throwing upper 80's after tommy john, could surprise if velocity comes back)

26. Travis Wood SP(A top 8 prospect a year ago, Wood struggled last season, partially due to fatigue... features an 89-91 MPH fastball, with THE BEST lefty change up in the minor leagues... With more innings under his belt, expect a rebound)

28. Misael Dejesus RHP (impressed at Sarasota last year, 110 K's in 99 innings, with 3.64 era... pitched in 36 G with 12 starts. Watch out for him)

29. Juan Carlos Sulbaran RHP  (18 years old, throws 89-92 MPH with good movement. Should start 09' with in either the GCL or Billings)

30. Phillipe Valiquette LHRP (21 years old, Drafted as a 17 year old, experienced for his age, features fastball 92-95 MPH range as a lefty which makes for a nice MRP)

Haha, sorry

Correct me if I'm wrong

But I don’t think Dunn is a Type A free agent. The D’backs didn’t offer him arbitration. We’re still not getting him back though.

by Brendanukkah on Jan 10, 2009 6:02 PM EST up reply actions

Dunn is type A according to...

MLBTradeRumors.com They have a link that contains information on all the 2009 Free Agents on the right side of the homepage. Check it out, thats where I got a lot of my info from.

by BruzFan on Jan 10, 2009 6:24 PM EST up reply actions

incorrect

Dunn was not offered arb. he is a type A, which means if he were offered arbitration he would cost the signing team a draft pick. since he was not offered arb, there is no draft pick compensation.

by Charlie Scrabbles on Jan 10, 2009 6:32 PM EST up reply actions

Yup

I made a mistake, Dunn and Abreu were not offered arbitration. I actually thought they both declined it. The only player on my list of free agents that would cost a pick is Orlando Cabrera since he did decline the whitesox offer. Thanks guys.

What happened to Dickerson?

I expect a nice year from him!

Reds fan for 40 years!

by gejoe on Jan 10, 2009 7:27 PM EST reply actions

He's there...

I have him slated to start in LF and hit 8. I like having a speedy guy hitting before the pitcher spot in the lineup. Dusty is going to wind up hitting whoever plays SS in the 2 hole, im about 99% sure of that, whether it be Hairston, Keppinger, or Gonzalez. Do’t expect Dickerson to hit over .300 like he did in August/September last season, he will likely top out at a .275 average this year. I expect him to be in the .260-.265 range.

Bullpens

Bullpens consist of 7 pitchers not 8, so that effects all of your subsequent lineups. I.E. Ramon Ramirez will be a SP in AAA not a LHRP in CIN….Bill Bray will fill that spot., so everyone will move a spot. As of right now they have too many SP’ers for AAA (Bailey, Maloney, Thompson, Ramirez, LeCure, Jukich, and Pettyjohn). Secondly, Nix is not slated to make this team out of S.T., they do still need a backup 1Bman but that would probably be Rosales as of right now simply due to the lack of an open spot on the 40 man to call up a guy who is only signed to a minor league deal. So again that effects every lineup and roster you’ve made Nix will be the starting RF’er in AAA and Bankston will likely be the starting 1Bman there. Ben Davis was signed in the hopes of converting him to a pitcher, he’ll probably start out at low A ball. Dorn and Valaika will probably start in AA…meaning Cumberland is your starting LF’er and Janish is your starting SS in AAA. Eymann probably won’t start in AAA at 3rd unless Rosales makes the opening day squad in CIN, Francisco will probably man LF in either A+ or AA to start the year. Most of these guys you have for A+ probably won’t be in A+.

Possible AAA Outlook:

1B: Bankston
2B: Richar
SS: Janish
3B: Rosales
LF: Cumberland
CF: Stubbs
RF: Nix
C: Tatum
BUC: Castillo/Jorgensen
BUIF: Bolivar/Barker
BUIF: Lizarraga
BUOF: Griffin
BUOF: Anderson/McDonald

You have a lot of work to due on these rosters, email me and I’ll give you my take better.

by Kinsm on Jan 11, 2009 11:38 AM EST up reply actions

^

I meant Frazier in LF not Francisco.

by Kinsm on Jan 11, 2009 11:40 AM EST up reply actions

Thanks for the heads up

Switched around a couple of things, I am still trying to get a better idea of how things will shake out. I had more players on the rsters because I just wasn’t sure what to do with all the guys. I think everything is pretty accurate right now. Let me know what you think.

Also, I have Valaika starting in Louisville for due to the fact that I see Janish as a utility infielder, with little upside. I think Frazier will continue to play SS in the short term, until he is ultimately moved to the outfield. We have log-jams at multiple positions including SS, 3b, and OF. I have Mike Griffin starting out at AA simply due to the depth we have at AAA (cumberland, stubbs, nix, anderson). The older players such as Barker and McDonald i have just noted in bold, since it is almost impossible to know what they will do with 34 year old minor leaguers if they don’t make the big league roster.

im hoping commentors can keep it on the front page for a little while. I created this just to get some people talking about their ideas, and what they think will happen in the upcoming season. Im a Reds fan living in NJ and I have no one to talk to about them lol. If no one comments though, oh well.

I do plan on linking this post to my future posts however. Thanks.

I don't think commenting matters

There’s a timer, and once a post is so many days old, comments are disabled. Doesn’t matter if people are still commenting or not. Once or twice, we’ve had posts that were at the top of the front page get their comments disabled by the timer.

I live in Point Pleasant Beach, and go to college in Mahwah, NJ which is about 40 minutes from Hoboken. I’ll venture in there on the weekends to drink at the bars, so next time i do, I’ll be sure to stop into 7 star… thanks for the tip!

i dont know much about jersey

except they drive crazy fast inches from your chasis. Newark is a dump. Hoboken is way underrated, great place to have some beverages. jersey girls EXIST, as do jersey guido dudes. the state car is the camaro…or at least it used to be.

very true.

I myself am an Italian. I get stereotyped as a guido all the time just because i wear my hair spikey and my last name is Abruzzo, although I am a normal guy lol. The drivers in NJ are great compared to the ones in NY, haha. Newark is a dump, Hoboken is underrated, but Camaro’s are far and few between nowadays.

by BruzFan on Jan 10, 2009 10:01 PM EST up reply actions

oh, let me expand

Guido doesnt mean Italian to me. It means beefy looking dude with a tank top wardrobe and lots of necklaces who’s first verbal utterance is generally “whatta you looking at”.

My best friend is Italian and married an Italian woman, I just had Eggplant Parmesan for the first time last month. I was stunned that she prepared three sauces from scratch, and had three wines to complement each sauce. i’d weigh 40 more lbs if i lived in their same area code.

do they even make Camaros any more? lol…

not sure

dunno if they make them anymore, i think they do? my family is real italian, my mom cooks big dinners like the one u just described, stop by around 3 on a sunday and I’ll show u a good homecooked italian dinner.

How about a crazy 3 way deal between the Reds, Yanks, and Nationals, where the Yankees get Homer Bailey and Dan Dorn the Reds get Lastings Milledge and Esmailyn Gonzalez (SS), and the Nationals get Xavier Nady and Mark Melancon?

The Yankees add another SP option in Bailey and it also gives them another trade piece they could use to acquire Holliday through trade at the deadline.

The Nationals would get Nady, who is the stable, consistent OF that they’ve been looking for (they’ve inquired on Nady already). Also, they would be receiving a GREAT arm in Melancon who projects as a nice closer… something they lack.

Let me know what you guys think?

The easiest way to make it work

Is to use the formatting buttons between the subject and body fields. Regular HTML tags should work, but don’t always seem to.

the problem

You are not putting in the web page name. You are putting in the URL, but since you don’t put in a web page name, the link is invisible. You can call the page anything you want, but you have to call it something, or there will be nothing to click on.

Made some corrections today with regards to the lineups, rotations, and bullpens for every level…added more players to watch in A+ and A and I turned my top 20 prospects list into the top 30 as well! enjoy

by BruzFan on Jan 11, 2009 7:55 PM EST reply actions

Since your not including Gonzalez,

you only have 24 players on the REDS roster!

im leaving an open roster spot for the free agent that Walt is going to sign… I anticpate him signing a power bat for off the bench.

As the major league roster stands now Dusty will not sit Keppinger.

1. Taveras CF RH
2. Hairston LF RH
3. Bruce RF LH
4. Votto 1B LH
5. Phillips 2B RH
6. Encarnacion 3B RH
7. Hernandez C RH
8. Keppinger 2B RH

I don’t think that Dusty is sold on C-Dick

Mads, he is a crazy old man. Plus we have kinda had the same sabrametric evolution togeather.

I know Keppinger is weak defensively

but don’t you think making him share a position with Brandon Phillips is a little extreme?

by Slyde on Jan 12, 2009 8:22 AM EST up reply actions

Keppinger..

Keppinger had the 41st best range out of 50 SS with enough attempts. Hairston was 47th. Eww. I personally like Keppinger better at SS then Hairston, the only thing he lacks is Hairston’s speed. We are going to see both of them playing alot of SS this year, and both will hit 2 in the lineup.

Slyde, i think that madville made a typo… he has kepp and phillips both at 2b, he meant to put kepp at SS.. not sure if you were juts making a joke, or actually thought he meant that though, lol.

by BruzFan on Jan 12, 2009 8:32 AM EST up reply actions

just a joke

I’ve been around Madville enough to know it’s just a typo.

If I placed Kepp at SS, dustbrains would bat him 2nd!

but

Kepp wouldn’t be a bad 2-hole hitter. He actually gets on base reasonably well when he’s hitting the ball.

Kepp would be a disciplined no. 2 hitter with T-virus in the steal mode.

yikes

the thought of Hairston, Taveras and Keppinger in the lineup at the same time completely underwhelms me.

I was totally wrong re: acquiring Hairston last year. he was a pretty damn good catalyst. I just cant see how he doesnt revert to the back of his baseball card this season.

by obc2 on Jan 12, 2009 10:08 AM EST reply actions

Unwhelm is a pretty poor choice obc...

Jerry Jr., T-virus, Kepp and Hernandez= a decent but not spectacular bench, We are in for a brutal 2009 unless there are career years produced by multiple mediocre players.

T-Virus!!!!

it’s getting traction!

Only if we can call Norris Hopper "scrapteria"

A center field platoon of T-Virus and Scrapteria would be nearly lethal.

Can it be cured?

Or perhaps T-virus is merely an organizational injockulation to prevent the future spread of a potentially devastating contagion?

Tanzen!

by Verka Serduchka on Jan 12, 2009 4:34 PM EST up reply actions

would said contagion be called Dusty?

You blew the joke

Shoulda been, “The potentially devastating contagion is known to be of the airborne variety, usually carried by Dust particles. Middling professional baseball locker rooms in the Midwest are the perfect environment for the disease to thrive……”

Urban dictionary comes through

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=T-Virus

Definition #3: The T-Virus is a genetically engineered version of the Ebola virus. The Ebola virus kills 90% of its victims however it is inefficient as it kills its victim before it can be transfered to another.

90% is a very willy like number!

Even better is definition #6: The name you give to a person that isn’t really wanted among a group of friends

T-virus is off with the pictch, the throw by Brian McCann has him 'dead' to rights...no..wait Wily is up and he's alright, he;s safe!

The T-Virus is a mutagenic toxin, altering the host’s chromosome structure on a cellular level. More than likely, it will kill its host, then reanimate its corpse.

Let one of their big gun prospects make the team out of ST. Then ill have someone to pull for. Probably not smart, but oh well.
