Game 139: Reds vs Pirates

Pittsburgh Pirates at Cincinnati Reds, Sep 3, 2008 7:10 PM EDT

Next Game

Pittsburgh Pirates
@ Cincinnati Reds

Wednesday, Sep 3, 2008, 7:10 PM EDT
Great American Ball Park

Ross Ohlendorf vs Edinson Volquez

Clear. Winds blowing out to left field at 5-10 m.p.h. Game Time temperature: Around 85.

Complete Coverage >

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Ross Ohlendorf 1-1 6.53 1.73 36 19

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Edinson Volquez 16-5 3.04 1.34 161 76

This will be Ohlendorf's first outing for the Pirates.  He previously pitched for the Yankees.  This will also be his first start as a Major Leaguer after pitching almost exclusively as a starter in the minors.  This typically does not bode well for the Reds high powered offense.

Wanna watch me jinx Edinson Volquez?  He hasn't allowed a home run in his last 5 starts.  Those 5 starts have all come since Ken Griffey Jr. was traded, so it appears that he more than anyone benefited from that trade.  Then again in those 5 starts he's struck out just 22 while walking 14 in 30 IP.

I hate Devou

I have to take four dozen balls to get through a round. :)

And I’d be ecstatic to shoot an 85 anywhere I’m pretty sure. I simply don’t play enough to be worth a damn.

I don't get how people make snide comments about soccer, yet golf is so popular

I’m off to watch a meaningful game in September. DC United is playing the Charleston Battery in the final of the US Open Cup. Not only does the winner of this game win the tournament, but they also get a spot in next year’s CONCACAF Championship (sort of like the Champions League for the Western Hemisphere). This would be United’s twelfth trophy in thirteen years of existence, with the Supporter’s Shield (best record in the regular season) and MLS Cup still in play. Vamos United!

We’re all part of Tommy’s army!
We’re all out to win the League!
And we’ll really fuck ’em up
When we win another Cup,
Cuz United is the greatest football team!

That's because

Golf doesn’t end in scoreless ties.

and in golf, you can compete with friends while drinking, smoking, toking…even gambling.

No riots in golf.

And in golf, you can be perilously out of shape and/or old. It’s a big deal…especially to John McCain.

by PeteyHendrix on Sep 3, 2008 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I've made no such snide comments that I can recall

but I do dislike soccer. It has never been part of my American sport fabric. Same with hockey and NASCAR. I’m sure it’s great if you grew up paying attention to it. I didn’t. But I would like someone to hand out Capri Suns after a round of drunken’ smoking golf. That would be nice.

Overserved and underwhelmed.

Cornhole is horseshoes for drunk people

If you get hit with a cornhole bag, it doesn’t hurt nearly as bad as being hit with a horseshoe. Nearly everything else is the same, a la soccer and hockey.

United won, 2-1

I think this was the first time I’ve ever been at a stadium when a team won a championship. Lord knows, following the Reds and Bengals, I’m starved for that kind of success. If you’ve never experienced such a thing, I highly recommend it. I’m friggin’ giddy.

And if any of you Red Reporters makes it out to DC and would like to see what I get so worked up about, your ticket and tailgate pass (unlimited booze!) is on me.

After tonight, he has:

9/20 vs MIL (D. Bush)
9/25 @ HOU (R. Wolf)

This is interesting I think

Brendan asked in last night’s game thread how many of Patterson’s plate appearance came in the 9th inning.

Most of his PAs in any single inning have come in the 8th: 40
Followed by the 1st: 38
Followed by the 9th: 36

He batted more in the 7th-9th innings than in the 1st-3rd or the 4th-6th

His line in the 8th: 205/.225/.538/.763 105
His line in the 9th: .212/.278/.485/.763 119

His line in 9 extra inning PAs: 000/000/000/000 -100

I’ve been out of the country prior to last year. I’ve been to more countries, visited U.S. territories, and I’ve lived in small towns and booming metropolises. I’ve also worked with the Muslim Society of North America and with Operation Shoebox, which helps service members overseas…you know, OVERSEAS…where she hadn’t been prior to last year.

Her statewide Alaska constituency is one-third the size of the San Fernando Valley. Staggering “executive experience.” Her hometown that she was mayor of had about half the population of last night’s Reds attendance.

But let’s remember that Dickerson is making his big league debut at 26, and his career numbers (.260/.360/.415) are nothing like what he’s doing right now. Even his career year at L’Ville this year was 150 points less of OPS.

For perspective, let’s remember this LH-hitting OF’s Reds debut (age 25): .318 .400 .602 (13 HR in 231 PA).

The immortal Jon Nunnally, who went on to hit another 9 career HR.

In what capacity did Dusty Baker just compare Willie Mays to Roberto Clemente?

I’m hoping it wasn’t as men off the field.

Why not

Wilkin Castillo in LF, C-Dick play CF, and Hanigan behind the plate?

It's hard to tell

When you only lie, doesn’t that eventually become your truth?

Castillo was brought into be a backup C

Which seems fine to me if he’s all he’s cracked up to be behind the plate.

I think all the other talk about his abilities to hit or play other places in the field is just a sales job

FWIW

Sickels thinks his versatility is legit, though he doubts his bat is anything more than a backup utility guy. He calls him athletic enough to play middle infield in an emergency.

I saw that

I really like the idea of getting a young back-up/defensive type catcher. It gives the Reds some leverage to go sniffing around for a hitting C if they want to.

I don’t like the idea of Castillo trying out for other positions, however.

agreed

I think he’s auditioning for LLM’s spot – though many will assume that he can’t bat .200 as a pinch hitter like LLM.

Dickerson

What’s the take here? ive missed most of the threads since he was called up.

by obc2 on Sep 3, 2008 9:04 PM EDT reply actions

I'd say it's a good start

but I wouldn’t expect him to be the kind of player he’s been long term. Give him 500 ABs and I think he’ll more likely be around .240/.340/.400. Still better than Patterson.

I’m actually not opposed to the idea of platooning him and Stubbs next season in CF.

Final Report from Repub. convention

After my wife awoke me from the droning and self adsorbed speech by Rudy G. I finally got to hear this Palin ‘gal’. Up until about 5 years ago I always considered myself a moderate fiscal Republican with a centrist to left leaning social sensibility. So I’m comfy (at least not freaked totally out) by the Neocons and their rhetoric…George Jr. pretty much killed any interest that I had in any party affiliation. So I felt like I could listen to the Governor from Alaska somewhat openly. As far as her presentation goes she has the whole package…from the goofy hair to the Fargo accent…Her speech was as good as I’ve heard or ‘seen’ in quite some time. She had the role down, never overplayed her hand and was soooo confident and relaxed as she attempted to slice and dice the Dems.
I give her an A on being a good ol’ small town mayor
an A on presentation and confidence
a C on substance – she said almost nothing new and actually contradicted herself on the bridge to nowhere travesty.
and a A on playing the crowd.

When McCain came out at the end I got such a flash of Mike Myers and Tina Fey that I couldn’t stop laughing.

I guess the Reds lost again…..

BTW – Mitt to the dark side = Changing from a moderate and progressive Republican stance such as he held as Gov of Mass to a total Neocon radical righty in his speech tonight which seemed to be aimed at garnering suppor for his 2012 run.

Good night Caleb – don’t drown yourself..we need you here at RR…

I'm in agreement Mads

though it definitely was a base re-enforcing speech, just like every other one has been for the ‘Pubs so far. The crowd would’ve gone nuts if she said anything attacking Obama though, they were foaming at the mouth against that inexperienced socialist. Not sure if the base is as big as it was in the last couple of elections, which’ll be a problem, but we’ll see. Definitely a nice coming out speech, just needs to be kept away from the press for 60 more days.
