FIRST!!!
i just looked at Brewcrewball, and it made me a little sad. This team hasn’t been very exciting over my lifetime. They won the World Series in 1990, but I was 3, but at that age I did know that thigns still existed even if I didn’t sense them at that exact moment.
1995 was the first year I was old enough to follow the Reds, which is why Pete Schourek is my favorite Red ever. I remember being heart broken in 1996 when he had elbow surgery. I remember hoping for him to come back in 1997 and it just didn’t work out for him.
1999 broke my heard, AL FUCKIN LEITER! I remember watching that game as it got out of hand. I was sick, I had a really bad cold, and sore throat. I remember watching as the Reds let the season slip away in teh last week of the season.
I remember when they acquired Griffey in 2000, probably the last time this town was really excited about the Reds.
I remeber when Jack McKeon was fired.
I remeber when Ron Oester was supposed to be the new manager.
I remember when Bob Boone became the manager.
I remeber being teased by the 2002 team. They were in first place for two months. They traded for Dempster, Moeller, and Estes to bolster the staff, which was led by Jimmy Haynes, Elmer Dessens, and Chris Reistsma. I was at the game when the Reds came back from a 4 or 5 run defficit in the 9th against Eric Gange (he was ejected before he could get a blown save)
I remeber the disastor and fire sale of 2003.
I remeber 2004, when Paul Wilson was roling. I remeber when I thought Paul Wilson was a good pitcher. I remember when they were swept by the Oakland A’s, and just feel apart that season.
I remember in 2006 when Bob Castillini made his press conference, I almost wept I was so excited. I remember when Krivksy was hired, I was even more excited. I remember when Aaron Harang came back on three days rest to replace an injured Eric Milton and threw a CG SHO against the Brewers. I remember when Adam Dunn hit a walk off grandslam agianst the Indians; I thought that was a sign that the Reds were playoff bound, it was so fucking amazing. I remeber the trade, and Eddie Guardado. I remeber right after the trade when Chris Denorfia hit a walk off single in his first game after Kearns was sent packing. I was there when Ryan Freel made an amazing catch to shut down a threatening Cardinal team, and the sellout crowd kept chanting FRA-EEL FRA-ELL. I remeber when David Ross hit the walk off home run against the Cardinals. I was at the next game and David Ross came out to warm up Arroyo, and found the crowd in the outfield cheering for him, he ran up right to the section I was sitting at ( i was in the first row) and just smiled.
All the excitment of 2006 is gone. I know I should be excited about Cueto, Volquez, Bruce, Votto, and perhaps even Homer Bailey. But I just don’t have much hope anymore. I began to feel this way after the 2005 season, but Castillini got me excited again.

rec'd: I have the same memories from the same age
I’ve always followed the Reds from a distance, unable to go to many games or watch too much on TV. So I’ve always been emotionally distance from the club until now. 2008 was a bad choice.

I agree with everything on here after 1995... I still wasn't old enough to know baseball well then...
I just hope the Reds get a series sometime soon… It sucks rooting for a team who hasn’t won during your whole lifetime…

goodbye losers
maybe im a little misguided, but i really think this team can contend next year. the staff is bona-fide and the pen should be too. Bruce and Votto are going to be the New Bash Brothers and EdE will finally unleash the beast within. with a few decent additions and a number of key subtractions Walt could really legitimize my confidence. its gonna happen. it has to.

i was wondering
we all know that blog admins are only as good as their bloggers, but does SB look at it another way. Like “Bless You Boys” is deffinantly underperforming. With all the talent and expactions the Tigers had coming into 2008, having a September game thread with less than 10 comments is just a miserable failure. Perhaps a change should be made in the admin?

there's nothing wrong with a little navel-gazing now and then
It should definitely be a community driven thing though. Meaning, I won’t be posting it, but if someone wants to throw up a FanPost™, I’ll support it. Just make sure it’s only positive. I don’t want an entire thread talking about how everyone hates so-and-so (i.e. me).

I'll be around if you'll have me.
I like the offseason. Well, at least the Hot Stove League part of the offseason. That doesn’t really kick in much until November.
I go back and forth from “Walt’s going to trade the entire farm in a misguided effort to win now to please Castellini” to “With the right moves, and not many of them, this team could contend in 2009.” Overall, I’m optimistic. I think.
I’m just glad I grew up with the Big Red Machine. Sometimes it’s bliss to drift back and settle in to the seventies for a spell. It makes taking the last 15 years a tad easier.

It kills me to stay overnight. No high speed internet, having to drive 5-10 miles minimum to get anything after 9:00 PM……I can’t say I miss it.
I’m not certain, but my dad’s house is the last house on the road with city water and not a cistern. In 2008. And that’s only because it’s across the street from the local church. It’s all about priorities I guess.

yeah i know
a few years back my mother made a concerted effort to move to Columbus. unfortunately there is a scant job market for mid-40s women with high school educations so she ended up moving back down home.
its really all about education. so many people from my high school class went off to college only to stumble and end up back home. once you come back, there’s no leaving again.
my mom’s getting here nursing degree though so it looks like the story will end well. unfortunately there just arent that many happy endings.

Hey, we have our first trade rumor of the offseason!
From the San Diego Times-Union comes this note:
“First Padres trade rumbling of the offseason: Reliever Clay Hensley has drawn interest from the Cincinnati Reds, and Towers will explore making a deal with his friend Walt Jocketty, the Reds’ GM.”
This doesn’t get me particularly juiced. Hensley had a strong 2006 — 11-12, 3.71 ERA, 1.34 WHIP — but hasn’tdone much since. He’s a groundball guy, which is good, but he gives up too many walks and doesn’t strike out many batters.

Joe Maddon makes me tingle
From Jayson Stark’s column:
“I don’t think of it as doing things outside the box,” Maddon said. “Just baseball is so stuck with doing things a certain way that when you try something a little bit different, it’s considered outside the box. But 30, 40 years from now, it might be considered common practice. All new ideas need to start somewhere, just like when Gene Mauch did the double switch for the first time. I’m sure people said, ‘Whoa, what’s that?’”
This is about when Maddon had Grant Balfour walk Josh Hamilton with the bases loaded to instead face Marlon Byrd (who then struck out to end the game). It’s not so much the maneuver itself that gets me, but rather Maddon’s mindset. Hey old school thinking! Sit on it!
Troy Percival had a great quote from that situation too.
“Guys [in the bullpen] were like, ‘No way!’” said Troy Percival. “But I was saying, ‘You don’t let Superman beat you when you have Wonder Woman on deck.’”
If this isn’t Marlon Byrd’s new nickname, then the system has failed.
