2008 - Johnny Cueto 9-13 4.62 1.38 157 65

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Roy Oswalt 16-10 3.60 1.19 162 44

Ugh, more Roy Oswalt?  Can't the Reds miss him just once?

Tonight's the night that Cueto wins #10.  I've been pining for it for weeks, but it will be one last milestone for this team - 3 pitchers with 10 or more wins for the first time since 2000.  Also, if Cueto can pitch at least 5 innings tonight without giving up an earned run, his ERA will drop below 4.50 and his ERA+ will finish over 100.  I'll take that from a rookie.

Plus, they need to win out to get to 78 wins to match my prediction at the beginning of the season.  I don't like being wrong.  Don't make be wrong.

Hey, Mark Reynolds broke the 200 barrier in strikeouts as the DBacks lose

The Dodgers therefore clinch the NL West.

It’s all Dunn’s fault.

Dunn on Reynolds
Adam Dunn knows what teammate Mark Reynolds is going through. Dunn set the major league record of 194 strikeouts in 2004 and held it for three seasons, until Ryan Howard broke it in 2007. “There are two ways to look at it. It means you are out there playing every day. A lot of people would have passed that if they played every day,” Dunn said. “It sucks, but if you are producing out there, I’m not changing a thing. It’s a production game. How many times do you step on home plate?”

eh

I’ve been picking on BF a lot lately, but it’s only because I find the reaction from Yankees fans this season to be fascinating. While we sit here rooting for a team in it’s 8th straight losing season, it’s hard to feel sorry for fans who think that they are an organization in shambles (fun fact: they have the same number of wins as the 2000 WS champions). Not that BF is this way, but she is the only Yankees fan that I interact with, so she gets the ribbing from me. Hopefully she knows it’s all in good fun.

WaMu

The FDIC took over Washington Mutual tonight. Holy guacamole. The FDIC always does these things on Friday night, so they have the whole weekend to get things fixed and account access restored by Monday morning. But it’s not Friday.

Meanwhile, the Times reports:

WASHINGTON — The day began with an agreement that Washington hoped would end the financial crisis that has gripped the nation. It dissolved into a verbal brawl in the Cabinet Room of the White House, urgent warnings from the president and pleas from a Treasury secretary who knelt before the House speaker and appealed for her support.

"If money isn’t loosened up, this sucker could go down," President Bush declared Thursday as he watched the $700 billion bailout package fall apart before his eyes, according to one person in the room.

Geez. Maybe people would believe you, Shrub, if you hadn’t lied like a rug about Iraq.

And it's all Ohio's fault...
But once the doors closed, the smooth-talking House Republican leader, John A. Boehner of Ohio, surprised many in the room by declaring that his caucus could not support the plan to allow the government to buy distressed mortgage assets from ailing financial companies.

Actually, I’m glad. I hate this bailout. Yes, “this sucker” is probably going done. But it’s going down anyway. It doesn’t need to go down with $700 billion of our money.

No, I think McCain is being very savvy here

People despise this bailout deal. It’s so hated, it makes Yankee fans look popular. Reaction from voters is running something like 100-1 against.

If one candidate stands against it, and other does not, the one who stands against it will win.

When McCain suspended his campaign, I thought he was crazy. But if his idea of “dealing with the financial crisis” is killing the bailout…he’s crazy like a fox.

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

by BubbaFan on Sep 26, 2008 12:16 AM EDT up reply actions

Despised does not equal wrong

It’s easy to take the principled stand here. Nobody likes the idea of bailing out investment banks. But if the practical choice is between the bailout and our borrowing system grinding to a halt, there shouldn’t be any question.

McCain is pulling such a shamelessly transparent stunt. Depending on how you gauge the swing voters’ intelligence, it might be savvy or it might backfire. He’s admitted that he has a weak grasp of economic issues. He stated just a couple of weeks ago that the fundamentals of our economy our strong. And he’s playing catch-up with others in Congresss because he was on the road when all of this came to a head. He adds nothing but noise to the process. We’ll see if it works for him.

CNBC reported

that Obama and McCain screamed at each other yesterday after the cameras were turned off.

I think most of our congresscritters want this bill to pass…while they vote against it. They can see the crap flying toward the fan. If the bailout doesn’t work, as is likely, anyone who voted for it will be dead meat. If it doesn’t pass, and the crap still hits the fan, then anyone who voted against it will be dead meat. It’s a no-win scenario.

Jon Stewart had a hilarious bit last night where he compared Bush arguing for the Iraq war with Bush arguing for the bailout. That’s the beef I have. Bush & Co. always set it up this way: either do what I say, or do nothing. Black or white, with us or against us, good guys or evil-doers. And always set up so there’s no time, it has to be approved now, now, now. They better not fall for it again.

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

by BubbaFan on Sep 26, 2008 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Then let's

approve an emergency loan in stages, with Congress having to approve further installments, and taxpayers getting a return on it through a stake or a payback plan with interest. ken’s right, we can’t not do anything. and you’re right, we can’t have the Bush administration that will be gone in 4 months making the final policy on this. Fact of the matter is that we’ve frozen lending, and that’s a big problem. Get an influx of cash into the system with consumer protection written into the bill.

Also, this is exactly why Barack and McCain shouldn’t have politicized this whole process. It’s completely counter-productive. I love Sen. Obama, he’s my guy and I’m working a 100 hours a week for him, but he’s gotta be smart enough to realize that he and Sen. McCain are not the real policy makers in this decision

But not Bush & Paulson have proposed. It’s a stupid idea. It won’t work.

I’d rather see something like Denninger’s plan.

The problem is too much debt, and too much secrecy. The point of the free market is that people are supposed to know what they are buying.

The answer to too much debt is not more debt.

I think the real worry is that we won’t be able to keep borrowing. Our Chinese overlords are not happy. Our creditors are all watching each other, ready to bolt for the door if they see any sign anyone else is.
