Dickerson done-rson
Via Teh Fay:
Dickerson ended his season batting .304/.413/.608 in 102 ABs. Not too shabby. There's been a lot of talk in Reds-land about him staying up for next season, and it's hard to argue that he hasn't earned the starting CF spot, or at least a shot at it in Spring Training. In the "Reds of the future" poster they passed out at the ballpark on Friday, he was featured alongside other prominent Reds position players like Votto, Bruce, Edwin, BP, and Keppinger (meh). I think that was the list, someone else correct me if I'm wrong about that. Either way, it probably means that Corey Patterson will continue his Farewell Tour playing every day in CF. Boo to that.Outfielder Chris Dickerson is finished for the season. He will have surgery Friday to correct a stress fracture in his heel. Dickerson's playing time has been limited by what was thought to be an Achilles problem.
"The MRI yesterday showed a stress fracture," Dickerson said. "It's kind of relief. I know I'm not going crazy. The orthodics weren't working. It's surgery but it's minor surgery."

there is an odd sense of satisfaction
in hearing a guy is having “season-ending surgery” when the season is already pretty much over. thats perverse, isnt it?

no, I completely agree with you
sort of like when Shaun hits the zombie with his car in Shaun of the Dead. “well, thank God for that”
...because there's already someone posing as Jacob Brumfield
Well
I guess we know why Dickerson wasn’t playing more.
Maybe Dusty’s not a complete idiot.
On a somewhat related subject…in Hal McCoy’s blog yesterday, he says Hopper and Freel are AWOL, and that might affect whether they’ll return next year.

Dusty understands a great deal about desire - He was an intense player
and always competitive. I think he makes odd and illogical managerial moves, but his players appear to be in sync with his general attitude about playing hard – every pitch zen.
I am amazed that Freel and NoHo are so nonchalant….wow!!! Hal asked:
“What do you think? Should Freel and Hopper at least be at home games? There was a time when Matt Williams had a broken hand with a cast on it, but he was in uniform before games making soft toss pitches to his teammates.”
Well either you’re on the team or you’re off. Period. You really have to have a really really good reason not to be at the park. Hell they’re still getting paid..plus they both could be a good influence and helpful to the young guys who are up in Sept.
Well now you know where I stand too. I’d rather have Corey Patterson that someone who is too lazy or disinterested in being a part of the team that is paying him big bucks even though he can’t play. Fucking New Age Union mentality.

and seeing Eric Milton around last year.

Freel I could see
He got his big contract, and will get paid whether he plays or not.
But NoHo…he’s not guaranteed big bucks or a place on the team. I would think he’d display more scrappiness.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Both are useless
I hope this means they’re gone for good.

I disagree.
Hopper could be useful, as long as infields don’t start playing 15 ft in for him. He plays decent defense in the OF (if I remember correctly), and he doesn’t cost much. Freel is useless because of his costliness and how often he’s injured. But the sunk cost effect probably means we’ll see freel next year and not hopper.
But that means I’ll have to permanently retire ‘Hoppinger’, which would be echt traurig.
Everybody's a jerk. You. Me. This jerk.
Hopper may be cheap
but so is SPAM. I’m not buying that shit either.

Hopper and SPAM both do wonders to your digestive tract too

sales of SPAM are jumping
Or so I hear. People can’t afford to buy real meat any more.
I actually like SPAM. I had some for breakfast this morning.
But I’m from Hawaii, which has the highest per capita SPAM consumption in the world. You can even buy SPAM breakfasts at McDonald’s there.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
**shudder**
Portugese sausage, spam, eggs, & rice. WAY too many times. :)

I actually ran across that little fact about Hawaii and SPAM this morning.

It's because it's an island
Almost all food was imported, and before the age of air freight, that meant canned food.
Hawaii used to be 1-2 weeks behind on TV shows, too. Before satellites, someone would actually have to hand-carry the reels on a plane to Honolulu.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
I also heard
The military occupation of Hawaii was the origin of the Spam lovefest. From Wiki:
Spam was introduced into the aforementioned areas(Hawaii/Guam/CNMI) in addition to other islands in the Pacific such as Okinawa and the Philippine Islands, during the U.S. military occupation in World War II. Since fresh meat was difficult to get to the soldiers on the front, World War II saw the largest use of Spam. GIs started eating Spam for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. (Some soldiers referred to Spam as “ham that didn’t pass its physical” and “meatloaf without basic training.”) Surpluses of Spam from the soldiers’ supplies made their way into native diets. Consequently, Spam is a unique part of the history and effects of U.S. influence in the Pacific.
The perception of Spam in Hawaii is very different from that on the mainland. Despite the large amount of mainlanders who eat Spam, and the various recipes that have been made from it, Spam, along with most canned food, is often stigmatized on the mainland as “poor people food.” In Hawaii, Treet, and all similar canned meat product other than Spam are referred to as “lunch meat” or “luncheon meat” are stigmatized in Hawaii as “poor people Spam.”

In these locales, varieties of Spam unavailable in other markets are sold. These include Honey Spam, Spam with Bacon, and Hot and Spicy Spam.
mmmmmmmm…..Spam with bacon. Color me intrigued. :)
"Aio, quantitas magna frumentorum est."
"Baked beans are off!"
Wife: Could you do the egg bacon spam and sausage without the spam then?
Waitress: Urgghh!
Wife: What do you mean ‘Urgghh’? I don’t like spam!

I dunno
My mom prefers Treet, because it’s less salty. I’d never heard that it was looked down on.
Luncheon meat in Hawaii is something else altogether. At least it was in my house. Luncheon meat is cold cuts. It comes pre-sliced, in plastic bubble packs, and needs to be refrigerated.
Canned meat in general is pretty popular in Hawaii. Vienna sausage, tuna, etc. We make sushi with canned tuna.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Yup, it took me a while to get used to the nomenclature
Stupid different cultures, why can’t they all be like the royalty that is a Kentuckian?

and he’s still got a job.

"sunk cost effect"
i.e. “not understanding math,” or the shorter version: stupidity.
I really wouldn’t mind Hopper and Freel as our two all-purpose backups. Then we’d just have to add two extra catchers and we’d have a bench!
The problem, of course, is that if they’re around, they will start over better players. This is stupid and annoying, but apparently unavoidable. But for God’s sake, either would be much, much better than Patterson.
I think we overmeet as a society.
I wonder about Hopper's defense
I don’t get to watch too many Reds games, but the times I’ve seen him play, I’ve been unimpressed. His arm in particular leaves a lot to be desired. Can anyone with more knowledge on the subject confirm or disconfirm my notion?
I do like Hopper though, but as a bench player. He absolutely should not be starting the majority of the games. He’s also one of the very few players that can execute Dusty’s bunting philosophy.

I'm not impressed with Hopper's defense
I don’t think he has the range for CF.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Hopper throws like a girl.
The only real asset he has defensively is his speed, and we already have Dickerson who has more range, a better arm (if only slightly), and a better bat. I agree, Hopper’s a situational Dusty-bunter off the bench, at best.
"My wife ain't never ran and got me no pheasant." - Fistbands
He had excellent +/- numbers in 2007
in the corners under Justin’s system, but slightly below average in CF where he played a slight majority of his innings. There are probably some sample size issues, but I think it’s fair to say that he’s a capable defensive replacement in any of the three spots.
Right there with Corey Patterson in center, incidentally.
Also: holy crap, Griffey was bad in RF. And Dunn was atrocious in LF that year, too.
I think we overmeet as a society.
Norris Hopper is a terrible 5th outfielder....
but as it has been already pointed out – dustbrains would play him over more competent players – because he is THE MASTERBUNTER
Ibn Khaldoun and Hulrich Zwingli - now that's real reform, Mr. McCain.
Also...
Note that Hal points to Alex Gonzalez as a guy who shows up every day, even though he’s been on DL forever. And is guaranteed his big bucks.
Sounds like he expect A-Gon be back next year.
Which I actually don’t have a problem with, if he can stay healthy. Big if, however.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
He'll be back
because there’s really no place for him to go. The question is, will he be handed the starting spot or will they make a move to find a better shortstop?
"You never want to give up a 7-0 lead, in your rival's ballpark, that would put them in first place. Never want to do that." - Ron Darling
Well said, Madville.
Either a guy is part of the team or he isn’t. Even if a guy is on the DL, he ought to be the best DL player he can possibly be. That might sound pie in the skyish, but that’s where I stand.

What do we want them to do?
Tutor the rookies in the art of playing hard enough to injure yourself once a month? Ooze scrappiness in the clubhouse? Hobble around playing practical jokes?
I don’t get it.
I think we overmeet as a society.
i dont expect these guys to accompany the team on roadtrips or anything
but they could at least show up to a home game or two, just for PR. Dusty is obviously the kind of guy who cares about that, and if these guys either cant see it or dont care about it then they are either stupid or careless. from the way Hal tells it they havent been around at all these past few months. any way you slice it that just doesnt reflect well.

There were comments in Hal's blog
suggesting that he was making shit up about them not being around at home games.
Maybe they were around, but managed to stay more than a few feet away from Hal?
I think we overmeet as a society.
They can't hide
And Hal’s no longer pulling punches.
by Brendanukkah on Sep 23, 2008 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions
it's funny because Hal is blind
and I think its sorta related, so I’ll post it without further comment. Except that if you’re not erading JoePo, you’re missing out:
Is it that Jeter seems to try harder? Is it that A-Rod can seemingly do anything, and it does not appear very hard for him. I asked Bill James how he would define a gamer, and he came up with this: A gamer is someone who somehow communicates to us that he is maximizing his physical talents. I think that’s right. Jeter is a gamer, no doubt, no one would question his alertness, his daily energy, his will. A-Rod, by definition, is not a gamer.
And it really doesn’t matter that A-Rod is a lot better baseball player.
...because there's already someone posing as Jacob Brumfield
The fans booed A-Rod
at the “farewell to Yankee Stadium” pre-game show Sunday. He hadn’t even done anything yet.
I think they just like to boo him. It’s become something to do at the ballpark, like the Wave.

You missed the absolute best part
This phenomenon is overpowering. I’d say just about every single day for 12 years, I hear from at least one fan (usually many more) who wonders why Skippy isn’t playing more. It doesn’t matter the season, the sport, the level. Skippy should play. Come on. Skippy plays so doggone hard, Skippy brings leadership, he offers intangibles, he knows how to play the game, the team needs more guys like Skippy, more guys willing to put team first, more teammates who don’t care about their statistics, more athletes who give 110%. These fans simply will not hear that Skippy cannot hit, Skippy cannot defend the opponent’s worst guard, Skippy cannot block, Skippy cannot get open, Skippy cannot get off his shot, Skippy cannot make decisions fast enough, Skippy does not have the arm to turn the double play or throw the deep out, Skippy cannot physically hold up. They will not and cannot hear that while Skippy can try as hard as he want, Skippy cannot play.
Harumph...
My only fear is that Dusty will relent on NoHo because he’s the only guy on the team that can bunt.
As to what I would want these lazy fucks to do: Show up, be supportive, talk about hitting and fielding and you know, BASEBALL to the younger players. Guys like Barry Larkin, Oester, George Foster, Pete etc all were taken under older player’s wings and then as their careers wound they did the same for new players like Ryan Freel. If for no other reason than common courtesy and remembering their own rookie struggles, I’d expect these guys to be at every home game.
